What The Bible Says About Loneliness

Jesus Knows How It Feels To Be Alone

What does the Bible say about Loneliness?

Jesus came to earth and lived like we lived. He went through many of the same experiences & feelings weve had. He was publicly rejected and abandoned by his friends. At one point, Jesus asked His friends to pray for Him in a time of distress, and do you know what they did? They fell asleep! Imagine how alone He felt in that moment.

Jesus has been alone. He knows what you are going through, and He is with you in every moment, ready to comfort you.

When Can Being Alone Be A Problem

As I mentioned before, we were not intended by God to be alone. While there are times that it may be necessary, we need to make sure that there is a designated end time. When we are alone, Satan can use the opportunity to tempt us. In the case of a couple that is experiencing problems, I have seen many times where Satan puts that understanding guy in the wifes life or a sweet sympathetic woman in the husbands life as a friend. This friend usually tells them everything they want to here and before long it progresses into more. Many marriages have been ruined this way. This is why this advice was even given in the context of prayer and fasting .

Likewise, many people choose to be alone because they have been emotionally hurt, abused, and even rejected by others in society. No matter what the reason, being alone subjects the person to thoughts and feelings that spiral into depression.

God Jesus And Loneliness

When we look at the life of Jesus we see many examples of being alone and loneliness.

Jesus was not afraid to be alone. He often withdrew to lonely places to pray.

It is good to have some moments of solitude so we can pray and reflect, but we should not isolate ourselves from others completely.;

Jesus also knew the feelings of rejection.

They were prophesied in;Isaiah 53:3:;He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

And Jesus also prophesied in John 16:32. Indeed, an hour is coming, and has come,;when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

Jesus knew that when he was deserted by people he would still have God.

;God is a God of relationship and community. That is evident in His very nature. He is the Trinity three in one; God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.;

But God was not always with Jesus. As he hung on the cross he felt the separation from God for the first time.

And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice,;Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni?;which is translated,;My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?;

This is the cry of a lonely person. Jesus can identify with our feelings of loneliness because he experienced it.

Why Do We Feel Alone

Verses For When You Are Lonely

Feeling alone is one of the worst kinds of hurt and pain there is.

We all long to be connected with someone. ;Everyone wants to have friends and know that someone cares about us.

You can be in a crowd and still feel alone if you dont feel connected to someone.

God made us this way. ;He himself is a God of relationship. ;He is the Trinity three in one.

Early in the Bible, in Genesis chapter 2, God made man and then said It is not good that man should be alone. ;Thats why He made woman, to be a companion.

You cant help it, you were made to be connected to others.

Sometimes we are lonely because we are insecure. A good way to overcome this is to realize your worth. Read Feeling like you are not enough

The Benefit Of Loneliness

If one of the Lords children needs to be alone in order to grow closer to him, he is a good Father and he will supply the opportunity, even if that means his child will experience deep suffering.

As painful as isolation can be, Christians are invited to remember that if they feel abandoned, the Lord will take me in . We tend not to reach this conclusion unless we have a real need for it. Jesus promised his disciples I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you .

Wilbert pondered, Pauls letters from prison thinking often of how long stretches of time alone might have been the fuel he needed to write those letters and yet, in prison? Alone? In those days, there is no more lonely place I can think of. God inspired Paul to use his isolation for the benefit of the first-century Church and for our benefit even to this day.

Work For Meaningful Connections Instead Of Waiting For Them To Come To You

It can be easy to relish the role of victim, to think no one has it as hard as I do, to believe the reasons Satan feeds us to make us think that is true, and actually indulge in self-pity. When the temptation comes to sit by yourself and wallow in your own feelings, rather overcome them and go out and do something with and/or for others. This builds love, unity, brotherhood and fellowship.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one anothers burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down ones life for his friends.

Philippians 2:3-4

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

1 John 1:7

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
