What Is God’s Glory In The Bible

The Father Glorified The Son

What is God’s glory?

God the Father, in turn, glorified God the Son. The Bible records Jesus saying that the Father glorified Him.

Jesus answered, If I am merely boasting about myself, it doesnt count. But it is my Father who says these glorious things about me. You say, He is our God.

The Father says glorious things about the Son.

At the tomb of the dead man Lazarus, God the Father openly glorified His own name. Jesus prayed to the Father to do this. We read,

Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.

The Father was glorified through the Son, as the Son was glorified through the Father. Therefore, the glory of God is seen throughout the members of the Trinity.

Because You Are Filled With The Spirit

God instructed Ezekiel to go to the valley, to meet and talk with Him there . When Ezekiel arrived at the place of appointment, he was confronted with the glory of the Lord.

Gods glory stood in that place.

The power of that glory was such that Ezekiel fell on his faceand then, he wrote, the Spirit entered me.

The Aim Of Pauls Writings

In the letter to the Ephesians, Piper notices that Paul gives us a rare and crucial reference to what he considers the aim of his writings:

the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ .

Paul tells us that by reading what he wrote, we could see what he saw. What did he see? The mystery of Christ, which is defined in verse 6: This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Two verses later he calls this mystery the unsearchable riches of Christ .

In Colossians 1:27, which is a parallel passage to Ephesians 3:3-8, we see this mystery connected to Gods glory. Paul writes, God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. So, the mystery in Ephesians is the riches of Christ and in Colossians it is the riches of glory. In other words, these riches are the same thing!

From these passages, Piper concludes, reading is a God-appointed means of seeing the riches of Gods glory, the unsearchable riches of Christ. This is why God inspired Paul to write Scripture. This is why he wrote. And this is what we should see when we read .

I brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything you told me to do.

The Son always glorified the Father.

Where Is Shekinah Glory First Mentioned In The Bible

God Does Everything for His Own Glory

The first biblical account of Shekinah Glory is recorded in Exodus after the Israelites had left the shackles of slavery in Egypt. God appeared to them as a pillar of cloud and fire as they were camped at Etham.

By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

What Else Does Shekinah Glory Refer To

Not only is the holy manifestation of God portrayed through Shekinah Glory, it also entails the practice of honoring and praising God by exemplifying His glory.

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of Gods glory displayed in the face of Christ.

Ways You Can Put Gods Glory On Display

The succinct, simple and direct mandate of Scripture is that “whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” . All of Gods creation is to be absorbed with putting the glory of God on display. When the angels announced the Saviors birth, they were joined by the heavenly host, glorifying God . The shepherds responded by glorifying God following their visit to the Christ-child in the manger . Even the physical creation incessantly declares His glory .

While the importance of this mandate is not lost on most Christians, its fulfillment frequently is. We heed lip-service, often closing our prayers of petition with, and well be sure to give you all the glory. But when the answer comes, we, much like the nine lepers, are often so elated that we fail to make good on our promise.

How can we follow the example of creation or join in the chorus with the shepherds and the heavenly host in glorifying God? The answer, I believe, is found in Exodus 33:18-34:8. When Moses asks to see the glory of God, God puts His glory on display by rehearsing His attributes, and thereby demonstrates how we can give God the glory that belongs to Him. Here are six ways you can put the glory of God on display:

Glory As An Attribute

The most common use of the word “glory” in the Bible is to describe the splendor, holiness and majesty of God. Glory, in this sense, is often associated with a person experiencing God’s presence in a tangible way. When used this way, the word glory conveys a sense of heavy dignity. One example of this is recorded in 2 Chronicles 5. According to the biblical account, God’s glory filled the newly constructed temple. This was experienced tangibly by those around, who saw a cloud fill the temple. This cloud, which signified God’s glory and presence, temporarily prevented the priests from conducting their duties.

How Can We Catch Glimpses Of God’s Glory Today

God still displays his glory in the heavens and the earth, that hasnt changed. One of the major displays of Gods glory today is the work he does in ordinary people like you and me. In the Old Testament after Moses encounter with God on Mount Sinai, he returned to his people and his face was glowing from being in Gods presence. His face was glowing so much they put a veil over him to cover it.

Today you and I have access to the very presence of God, but in a better way than Moses. He experienced the glory of God for a moment and eventually that radiance would go away. We have Gods spirit within us so that radiance never has to go away. Gods presence doesnt just come and go, Gods presence is ever with you because he dwells within you. As you surrender more and more to the Holy Spirit you become more of the trophy of Gods grace and the evidence of Gods glory within you will radiate to those around you.

What Is The Glory Of God According To The Bible

What is the glory of God? is certainly one of the most foundational questions to answer in all of Christianity because the glory of God is so central to the gospel, the Bible, and everything God does.

Humbly, however, we must first accept our answers will always be incomplete as our Infinite God can never fully be described by his finite creatures. With that said, the Bible uses the phrase glory of God in many different ways, which means we can create many different definitions in general. However, the Bible primarily uses the phrase the glory of God in a specific way, and therefore what follows is a specific definition.

Definition: The glory of God is the invisible qualities, character, or attributes of God displayed in a visible way.

According to the Bible, the Glory of God Is His Invisible Character Made Visible

Isaiah 6:2 states, Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts the whole earth is full of his glory! Youd think this verse would end by saying, the whole earth is full of his holiness. But it doesnt. It states that the whole earth is full of Gods glory. When the character of God, like his holiness, goes public for the world to witness and know, the Bible refers to this as Gods glory.

God created the universe, the stars, the world, and everything, and it all bears Gods image to some degree. Thus the Bible states that it all declares his glory .

According to the Bible, the Glory of God Is Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the glory of God.

Because You Are Stepping Into Your Divine Appointment

When Isaiah was confronted with the glory of God upon His Throne, he became instantly aware of his sin. The man cried out, woe is me, for I am ruined! .

At that moment an angel came with a hot coal from the altar, touched Isaiahs lips and said, your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.

This is the extraordinary grace of God: that Hein all His holiness and majestycontinues to pursue you.

Gods Glory Leads To Praise And Worship

Luke included another reference to glory in his record of Christs birth when the angels broke out in praise at the Saviors birth. They proclaimed, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! .

The angels proclamation of glory in this passage relates to having a favorable opinion. It indicates Gods worth and value, which results in praise. Gods worth and value is understood in the Hebrew meaning of khabhod, which means weightiness and value.

Just as golds value is measured by weight, Gods glory is an indicator of his value. Throughout the Old and New Testament, evidence of Gods glory is seen in miracles. A natural response to seeing miracles was to praise God and give him glory.

In the Old Testament, the miracle of manna was a sign of the glory of the Lord . After leaving Egypt, the Israelites grumbled against God and Moses. God told Moses to tell the people that in the morning, he would rain down bread from heaven.

Moses explained, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against the LORD. For what are we, that you grumble against us? .

The first miracle John records is Jesus turning water into wine. This miracle is a manifestation of his glory. This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him .

The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one .

The Glory Departed When The People Disobeyed

What is glory, and why is it so important to God? (Ask Dr. Stanley)

When the people disobeyed God, the Bible says that His glory departed from them. We read about this episode in the Book of Samuel. As the wife of one of the evil sons of the high priest was dying in childbirth she gave the child an appropriate name.

Then she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory has departed from Israel! because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

This was one of the most tragic times in the entire history of the nation Israel. Gods glory had departed from the people because of their disobedience.

The Bible talks about a supernatural light that glowed around religious objects or in natural things like clouds. This light represented Gods presence. That supernatural glowing light is called the glory of God.
