Ancient Manuscripts of the Bible
While archaeology provides a great deal of information and physical evidence, much of it also needs to be interpreted in a historical framework and with ancient texts to help us decipher events, architecture, and artifacts. Many ancient documents have survived millennia. Among these documents are historical sections which recorded people, places, and events, giving us detailed insights into the past. In Mesopotamia, thousands of clay tablets have been preserved which record historical events, religious beliefs, economic and social practices, and technology. In Egypt, stone inscriptions, painted walls of tombs and temples, and papyrus were the preferred mediums for similar writings. The Bible, however, was primarily written on parchment with ink, or in some cases on papyrus. Many of these ancient Biblical texts have been discovered through archaeological excavations in Egypt and in caves near the Dead Sea, while others were handed down and preserved in libraries of monasteries. What we call the Bible is a collection of books and writings spanning over 1500 years, written primarily in Hebrew and Greek, and divided into a Hebrew Bible Old Testament and the Greek New Testament . In the Old Testament, the books of Moses and probably Job are the earliest, while the books of Zechariah and Malachi are the latest. In the New Testament, the Gospel of Matthew may have been the first written, while the book of Revelation was certainly the last.
Scribes Copied The Writings Meticulously
We can confirm the accuracy of the transmission of the original Bible to copies in four important ways.
First, after the Babylonian captivity, Ezra and other scribes carefully went to work to ensure that plenty of copies of Gods Word would always exist. These scribes became known as lawyers because of their knowledge of the Old Testament law.
Second, the Talmudists , the Masoretes , and other such groups who copied under the strictest of rules reproduced the Old Testament. Their high standards reflect the accuracy of their copying. Here are some of the rules they followed:
- They could not copy from memory.
- They could not correct the original if they felt it was wrong .
- On each line they copied, they counted the number of letters and words, compared middle words, checked the frequency of each letter, and the like.
- They used the space of a hair between each letter. (Talk about precise!
- They reverently burned or buried worn-out copies .
Third, there is an overwhelming amount of evidence for the New Testament. Its 27 books were written between AD 40 and 100. The earliest known copy of part of the New Testament is dated only a few short decades after the completion of the original.
Also, there are 5,400 ancient copies of the New Testament in Greek alone, 10,000 more in Latin, and 9,300 in other languages. From this wealth of sources, scholars have made comparisons to accurately determine the original.

HOLY BOOKS HAVE A REACH that goes far beyond what virtually all works of literature can ever accomplish. Unlike, say, The Great Gatsby, the Bible is a text upon which millions and millions of people have based their entire lives.
That fact can be good or bad, and its often been both over the many centuries throughout which Christians have been reading the Bible and Jews have been reading the Torah. But given its immense reach and cultural influence, its a bit surprising how little we really know about the Bibles origins. In other words, who wrote the Bible? Of all the mysteries surrounding the Bible, that one may be the most fascinating.
Were not completely ignorant, of course. Some books of the Bible were written in the clear light of history, and their authorship isnt terribly controversial. Other books can be reliably dated to a given period by either internal clues sort of the way no books written in the 1700s mention airplanes, for instance and by their literary style, which develops over time.
Religious doctrine, of course, holds that God himself is the author of or at least the inspiration for the entirety of the Bible, which was transcribed by a series of humble vessels. About the best that can be said for that notion is that if God really did write the Bible through a millennium-long sequence of various authors, he was certainly doing it the hard way.

Where Are Bible Manuscripts Kept
However, there arereviews before after the copying not immediately but over time, they wereable to be reviewed and compared. This is the main reason why some books werenot included in the most canon of different denominations of Churches.
Even if there are no original manuscripts, there are copied ones preserved in different locations of the world. There is Codex Vaticanus and Codex Sinaiticus. Talking of the oldest manuscript, these are the ones considered to be the oldest. With the vast amount of evidence that still exists around the world, we can be assured that God has left us enough to know His word.
God Preserved The Writings
The Bible was carefully preserved from Genesis to Revelation.
The Old Testament: This canon was started about 1400 BC and completed about 450 BC . According to Josephus, the Jewish people divided the Hebrew scriptures into the following sections:
- The Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.
- The 13 Prophets: Joshua, Judges, and Ruth Samuel, Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Lamentations Ezekiel, the 12 Minor Prophets Daniel, Job, Esther, Ezra, and Nehemiah and Chronicles.
- The Four Writings: Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes. Sometimes Job, Ruth, Lamentations, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, and Nehemiah, and Chronicles were added to this third section of writings.
The New Testament: Soon after the church began, the need for a second canon of accepted Scripture writings developed.
The New Testament canon formed much more quickly than that of the Old Testament because of the loss of the apostles and other witnesses, the expansion of Christianity beyond Palestine, the need to protect the message from false teachings, the persecution of believers , and the missionary enterprise .
The early church went through several steps to finalize the New Testament canon. Most of the books were widely recognized as canonical in the second and third centuries. Some seriously questioned only a few of the later books in the New Testament. By AD 397, two official church councils had confirmed the canonical nature of the 27 books of the New Testament.

The Nation Of Israel Went Through Many Difficult Times
The history of the nation Israel must also be considered. The nation has been twice removed from its homeland. The first time was for seventy years while the second time was for almost nineteen hundred years. At the seventy year Babylonian captivity, the people were sent off to a foreign nation. The city of Jerusalem was destroyed, the temple burned, and all its treasures taken away. It is a testimony to Gods providence that the Scripture survived the deportation of the nation to Babylon. The psalmist wrote of this difficult time:
How can we sing the songs of the LORD while in a foreign land?
As God had promised, the people returned to the land and again sang the songs of Scripture.
At the second exile, the city and temple were again destroyed. Those who survived were taken to Rome and sold as slaves. The nation did not again become an actual functioning state for almost two thousand years.
The Holy Scriptures had to contend with this sort of conflict from those who opposed the nation. The text would have had to have survived these two deportations as well as other calamities the nation faced.
Summary Question 4 Why Dont We Possess Any Of The Original Manuscripts Of The Books Of The Bible
There are a number of reasons as to why we do not have the originals of the books of the Bible.
First, the materials used to copy the texts were perishable. They would wear out through constant use. This is to be expected with any ancient writing. In addition, thousands of years have gone by since the most recent biblical book was written. Again, we should not expect them to survive over such a long period of time.
There was also the practice of the Hebrew scribes destroying old copies to keep them from being corrupted by unbelievers. This would cause the originals to perish.
The nation Israel, with all of the upheavals they faced, made it difficult to protect the ancient manuscripts from destruction. We also have one example of a king of Judah destroying the original writing of Jeremiah. However, we are also told that Jeremiah was told by the Lord to produce a new copy of the Scripture.
We know of the destruction of copies of Scripture by the enemies of God. There was an Empire-wide persecution of Christians at the beginning of the fourth century.
There is also the fact that original copies of Scripture may become objects of worship. Because we do not have the original writings of the books of the Bible, the science of textual criticism is absolutely necessary in reconstructing the text from the manuscripts we do have.

How Many Ancient Manuscripts Of The Old Testament Are There
In the old synagogue in Cairo were discovered 260,000 Hebrew manuscripts, 10,000 of which are biblical manuscripts. There are more than 200 biblical manuscripts among the Dead Sea Scrolls, some of them were written in the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet. They were written before the year 70 CE.
The Books Were Written Thousands Of Years Ago
There is also the factor of time. The last written book of the Bible was composed some nineteen hundred years ago. The first books of Scripture, the writings of Moses, were composed about thirty four hundred and fifty years ago. Over this long period of time, manuscripts can become lost or worn out through constant usage. This factor, along with the perishable surfaces of the documents, makes it nearly impossible for an original text to have survived.

The Texts Were Destroyed By Those Who Did Not Like The Message
There is an example of the text of Scripture being destroyed by one of the kings of Judah, Jehoiakim. We read about this episode in Jeremiah 36. It says:
Here we have an ironic example of the Scripture being destroyed by a Jewish king. However, we are told that the burned scroll was rewritten by Baruch the scribe. We read:
After the king had burned Jeremiahs scroll, the LORD gave Jeremiah another message. He said, Get another scroll, and write everything again just as you did on the scroll King Jehoiakim burned.
The Word of God cannot be destroyed!
How Did Christianity Spread Around The World
The Epistles, or letters, written by Paul the Apostle to churches dotted across the Mediterranean world which are our best source for the initial spread of Christianity confirm that Christianity started in Jerusalem, but spread rapidly to Syria and then to the rest of the Mediterranean world, and was mostly accepted by non-Jews, says John Barton, former professor of the interpretation of holy scriptures at the University of Oxford.
The epistles are our earliest evidence for Christianity, says Barton. The first date from the AD 50s, just two decades after the death of Jesus.
As Pauls letters to churches such as the one in the Greek city of Thessalonica reveal, the first Christian communities were often persecuted for their beliefs.
And its such persecution, particularly at the hands of the Romans, that may have inspired the last book of the New Testament, Revelations. With its dark descriptions of a seven-headed beast and allusions to an imminent apocalypse, Revelations is now widely believed to be a foretelling of the grisly fate that the author believed awaited the Roman oppressors of Christianity.

In order to answer these questions, lets first decide what we mean by the original Bible. That phrase refers to the revelation that came from God to the human authors. They wrote down exactly what was revealed to them, using their own vocabulary and writing style. These messages from God came to some forty different people over the span of 1600 years! The concluding one, the book of Revelation, was given 2000 years ago around 100 AD.
Unfortunately, none of these original manuscripts exist today. Well over 3000 years have passed since Moses first penned the book of Genesis. None of his own writing has survived, but copies have been made down through the centuries. The scribes who made these copies were extremely careful as they did their work. We know this because there are over 5000 complete or partial copies of the originals, actually copies of the copies. Yet these thousands of copies agree with each other to an amazing extent. There is no major variation in any of them. No other book from ancient times has this much underlying documentary support. So we are sure we have the original text as it came from the mind of God.
Because what we have are copies of so many manuscripts, there is no single location where the original Bible is housed. The Bible text most often used by scholars and translators is a composite made from the oldest and most reliable of the ancient manuscripts. These old manuscripts are housed in several museums and other places all over the world.
