There is no valid command but to love. Any religion or spiritual discipline, any philosophy or ethical system, which gives any other command, is thereby missing the point.

For Christ, there were two commands which summed up the whole divine law.

Luke 10:27 – “…Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.

Although there is a different object of love in each of these commands, the action required by each of them is one and the same: to love. Elsewhere, Jesus even commands us to love our enemies. We are to love all living beings, all sentient things: divine, human, or other. In one vital sense, even the command to love God is a double reference to love. After all, “God is love” . So in a very real and important sense, to love God is to love Love itself: to be in love–heart, mind, and will–with the highest Embodiment of pure, divine Love. What a goal. This is the single, only goal of religion or spirituality. Any religion or doctrine that suggests another goal is empty noise. Any religious activities or pursuits which do not tend towards that goal are frivolous nonsense: “vanity of vanities.”

The Do Unto Others Verse

Okay, so I dont know about you, but I actually thought the words do unto others as you would have them do unto you were in the Bible. I thought it was the King James rendering of a particular verse and was surprised when I couldnt find it anywhere in the Bible! What I did find were these words:

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets .

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise .

While the verses dont literally say Do unto others, the essence is the same. We should treat people how we want to be treated and not necessarily how they treat us. But why? Isnt there also a verse that says an eye for an eye? So why do you have to take the high road? Am I the only person struggling with this? Why cant you just treat everyone the way you believe they deserve to be treated?

After explaining that our Father in heaven loves to give good gifts to those who ask, Jesus says this verse. While it is true that we are to love our neighbor as ourselves , and we are even to consider others more important than ourselves , it is a given that to be a being with a self, we naturally major on loving ourselves, and caring for ourselves. This can be done sinfully, and selfishly, or logically from the standpoint of stewardship. In a certain sense, if we do not take care of ourselves, someone else will be forced to, or we will die. Stewardship dictates that we take responsibility for whatever God gives us, and this starts with our very own bodies. Paul said to the Ephesian husbands, After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church .

Let go of all your grievances and let God sort them out. Your own trek forward will be hindered or even stopped if you dont. Tell them the truth. If you see something they may need to change about their life, tell them honestly but kindly. Admonish others from time to time; words of warning are easier to hear from a friend. Little lies wont save them from hearing bad things from others. Lies only serve to save yourself from feeling uncomfortable.

Confess your own sins to others. Give testimony about how you used to be but by Gods grace you arent anymore. Admit sins, admit weaknesses, admit fears, and do this in front of other people. Never have a holier-than-thou attitude. We all have sin and fall short of what we really want to be like, and we all need grace that comes from faith in Christ alone. Use your God-given gifts and talents to serve others. Share what youre good at with others; dont keep it to yourself. Dont let the fear of rejection stop you from showing grace to others.

In this article, I will consider “love your neighbor as yourself” and “do unto others as you would have them do to you” as two different forms of the same idea: the Golden Rule.

There was a Jewish rabbi who lived around the time of Jesus, whose name was Hillel. It is said that once a pagan came to Hillel and told the Rabbi that if he could recite the entire Jewish Torah while standing on one leg, then he would convert to Judaism. Hillel replied, “What is hateful to you do not do to your neighbor; that is the whole Torah, while the rest is commentary. Go and learn it.”

Note that in Matthew 7:12 , Jesus also claims that the Golden Rule “sums up the Law”. In this passage, “the Law” actually refers to the same Jewish Torah that Rabbi Hillel referred to. So both Hillel and Christ formulate a rule which they claim expresses the entire Jewish Law . And the rule stated by Hillel sounds very much like the “do unto others” Bible verse. But we will see that there is a great deal of difference.

The idea of treating others as you want to be treated is known as the Golden Rule. A great example of the Golden rule comes about in the story of the Good Samaritan . Jesus intentionally gives an example of both a priest and a Levite as being the people who ignored the Jew robbed and hurt on the side of the road. And yet a Samaritan, someone who should despise the Jew, inconvenienced himself to care for a stranger. Jesus makes clear which of the three figures God was pleased with for helping the Jew.

This information is vital for evaluating our own lives and ensuring we design our lives around how God defines love. Love does not occur when we want convenience or prefer the person. Love is meant for everyone, just as God loves everyone.

What Is The Meaning Of ‘do Unto Others’ In Luke : 31 And Matthew : 12

The Book of Luke and the Book of Matthew were written by Luke and Matthew respectively. Luke is one of the prominent writers of the New Testament. In addition to the Book of Luke, he also authored Acts. Though he did not bear witness to Jesus ministry firsthand, he studied the works of Christ through others such as Paul, whom he worked with. On the other hand, Matthew was a tax collector who left his life to follow Jesus ministry, becoming one of the 12 disciples. In both of their books, we see a repeated idea of doing unto others.

Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.

In the verse from Matthew, he begins the passage admonishing readers to not judge in order to avoid judgment. He goes on to say that the measure by which we judge others is the measure by which we will be judged. Judged by who? God. He continues that we cannot complain and harshly criticize others if we ourselves have problems of our own. He refers to these personal problems as a splinter and a beam of wood

How do we respond? The answer again appears in Scripture. Jesus says to bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Our call then, to do unto others as we want done to ourselves extends to everyone. Everyone. God has not intended for our love to be reserved just for Him, or for only people who think, look, and act like us.
