Obstacles To Believing In Your Identity

Even if you know all these things about where a follower of Christ finds their identity, there can often be obstacles standing in the way of believing who you are in Christ. Other sources of identity often stand in the way, such as career, appearance or money. But there are other things that can distract you as well.

Bible Verses About Identity In Christ

I remember being hugely marginalized and mistreated as a child from a Christian household in Communist Romania. My family and other Christians were seen as state enemies. I was frustrated because I knew deep down in my heart I wasnt a Christian. I hadnt committed my life to Christ at that time.

Later on in my childhood, I understood the power of Christ and who I really was in Him. The frustration with teachers and leaders disappeared, and compassion took its place. I started praying for them, thinking, if they only knew how amazing it was to belong to Christ. Once I became a Christian, my viewpoint changed and I started to ground my identity in Christ.

Realizing who we are in Christ is understanding mercy and having the ability to extend mercy. Knowing our own value helps us see Gods heart for those with which we interact. Yes, being hidden in Christ, thats your true identity. In Christ, you are truly enough and his grace is sufficient for you.

Bible Verses About Our Identity In Christ

What does the Bible say about our Identity in Christ? – Top Scriptures Quotes

The Bible tells us that our identity in Christ is part of accepting His gift of eternal life through faith. Jesus gave His life on earth and rose from the grave to conquer death and sanctify those who believe in Him. When we become followers and believers in Jesus, we lose our identity of this world and embrace our identity in Christ. Our identity in Christ is being a member of His body, the church.

“He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. John 1:11-13 ESV

“If one member suffers, all suffer together if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:26-27 ESV

What Is Our Identity In Christ

Our value and identity in Christ is much deeper than the beauty of a gorgeous palm tree on a sunny beach. As beautiful daughters created by our Father, our identity is found in the truth of Gods Word.

The enemy will try to deceive us as he did Eve in the garden. Satan attempts to plant seeds of doubt in our minds about our identity, influencing us to believe lies about who we really are. The enemy uses our past experiences, current circumstances, and the negative words and opinions of others to make us believe that we are worthless and insignificant.

But who does God say we are?

The voice of His truth is the only voice that matters, and the voice of a stranger we dare not follow . We must silence the lies of Satan by daily drenching ourselves in the truth of who we are in Christ through the lens of Scripture.

Tell Others About Jesus And The Gospel

Discipleship is a big part of living out our identity in Christ. God wants us to bring the world to Him. We are His disciples and He instructs us to make more disciples. Thats how His kingdom grows.

The word disciple means student. Becoming a new creation and a disciple of Jesus means we are committed to learning His ways and making them our own. In addition, we help others do the same.

We Should Not Be Surprised When Suffering Comes But We Can Be Confident That It Will Produce Things Of Eternal Value

The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

If our identity is in Christ, then we are guaranteed that one day we will identify with him in his sufferings. Just as Christs sufferings were not hopeless and wasted, neither will ours be. Christs sufferings defeated sin and death, and therefore we identify with him as he uses suffering to put sin to death in us, to make us reflect more of him. Not only does suffering sanctify us, but it assures us that, after suffering with him for a while, we will one day be glorified with him.

This theme of suffering has been a familiar one for me over the last several years. While I will be the first to say that they have been some of the hardest years of my life, I can also say they have been some of the best. Everyone suffers, but can everyone look back at their suffering with thankfulness and joy because of it? Only those with the hope of Christ can do that. There is no good that comes from suffering if we are apart from Christ.

However, I can attest to the truth that the more I have let go of what I thought I wanted , the more I have found joy and treasure in what only Christ could have done through the pain he has ordained in my life. Suffering gradually changes our earthly perspective into an eternal one.

Second Corinthians : 6

Because the God who said, Out of darkness light shall shine, is the One who shined in our hearts to illuminate the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellency of the power may be of God and not out of us.

In verse 7, the apostle Paul describes the believers as earthen vessels that contain this treasure. What is this treasure? In verse 6 we see the treasure is Jesus Christ, in whose face we see the glory of God. Christ lives in us earthen vessels as a precious treasure, revealing the glory of God to us from within.

Knowing who we are in Christ is foundational. When we are uncertain of our identity in Christ, we will lack clarity on what our purpose is exactly. We will experience self-doubt as we define our own identity based on our life experiences rather than scripture. Each of us has life experiences and people in our lives that have impacted our identity- whether positively or negatively. We have a tendency to draw our identity from who others say we are. This leaves us on shaky ground.

Knowing who we are in Christ brings clarity and certainty into our lives. We will lean into and live out our purpose with confidence! My trust will be in who the Great I Am, says I am, rather than who the world says we are. Or who we say we are

Where Do You Find Your Identity

Our Identity in Christ: Session 1

While our world encourages you to look within yourself for your identity, your natural tendency is to search for your identity in external things.

One of the first places that you can be tempted to look to is your career. Spending your time and energy pursuing your career can cause you to feel like it is a defining characteristic of who you are. After all, a job that you are dedicated to is likely to take up most of your time and attention.

Jobs and careers are closely connected to other places where you can search for your identity, such as financial success and status. But it doesnt stop there. We also ask our relationship statuses, appearance, grades, and reputation to provide a sense of identity.

Any or all of these may feel like solid foundations, but none of them are permanent. Any of them could change without warning. If you base your identity on things like success, wealth, power, physical appearance, and so on, you are setting yourself up for great disappointment. A sudden job loss could leave you questioning your choices in life. One piece of gossip aimed your way could destroy your reputation, even if it is untrue. Your appearance will change as you get older.

God, however, is unchanging. He is reliable. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. If you find your identity in Him, you will never ultimately be let down because He has proven time and time again to be trustworthy.

    Protecting Our Identity In Christ

So at the very beginning of the scripture, the beginning of creation God had established a dwelling place for us, a relationship with us, and an identity for us.

When we separated ourselves from the truth we separated ourselves from God. That explains in more simple terms what happened when Eve at the forbidden fruit. She was deceived. Scripture tells it like this in Genesis chapter 3:

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, Where are you?

He answered, I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked so I hid.

And he said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?

The man said, The woman you put here with meshe gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.

Then the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done?

The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate.

    Genesis 3:8-13

Lies and deception will always lead us further away from God.

Through the gospel, God makes a way through reconciliation with Him. Now its our turn to carry out our portion of this mission by accepting Gods gift of forgiveness and new life in Him and allowing it to lead us in righteousness.
