The Practice Of Our Lord Of Honoring His Parents

Children Obey Your Parents. Ephesians 6:1-4. Honor Your Father and Mother (#22)

Our Lords practice with respect to honoring parents serves as a commentary on His teaching.

And when He became twelve, they went up there according to the custom of the Feast and as they were returning, after spending the full number of days, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. And His parents were unaware of it, but supposed Him to be in the caravan, and went a days journey and they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. And it came about that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. And when they saw Him, they were astonished and His mother said to Him, Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You. And He said to them, Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Fathers house? And they did not understand this statement which He had made to them. And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth and He continued in subjection to them and His mother treasured all these things in her heart .

It is also in Johns gospel that we find one of the last acts of our Lord upon the cross was done in fulfillment of our Lords obligation to honor his mother.

The One Who Loves Their Children Is Careful To Discipline Them

Whoever spares the rod hates their children,

but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.

Everyone makes mistakes, and we all sin. But when children make poor choices, disobey, or hurt others, its not always immediately clear to them that theyve done something wrong. They may not understand why what they did was wrong. And if it resulted in something they desired, they may be more motivated to do it again.

Consequences help us avoid repeating bad behavior. Sometimes discipline is as simple as talking to a child about what theyve done and why it was wrong. Sometimes the consequences are more severe. But its never comfortable or pleasant. Good fathers recognize that discipline comes from a place of love and a desire to teach your children what is right.

Why God Wants Us To Honor Our Parents

Deuteronomy 5:16 “Honor your Father and Mother as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you In the land the Lord your God is giving you.

God says that if we honor our parents and follow His commandments by default He promises to give us:

  • Long days & long life
  • Wellness in whatever land God is giving you

I do understand that you may be someone who doesn’t want to honor your parents, maybe you have suffered from parental abuse, or painful things have been caused by your parents, if so, I’m very sorry you’ve had to experience that, May I suggest to

  • Pray for your parents– Ask God to help them become a better person and to live in obedience to Him.

  • Forgive your parents – Ask the Lord to help you forgive so that you can move on with the beautiful life He has promised for you. He desires Glory for you.

  • I believe that God expresses to honor our parents in the Bible because He desires for the parent and child relationship to be the most important relationship of all relationships. The reality of it all is that we carry specific traits from our parents, we carry roots and their habits at times whether we believe it or not, and healing this relationship if it’s broken is vital. God want’s us to have a healthy relationship because he chose them for us, He wants us to respect them and listen to their instruction.

Your Father Gives Good Things To Those Who Ask Him

    Pin on Bible Scripture

Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Fathers cant give their children everything they want. But they do their best to give good gifts and fulfill their childrens needs. Jesus uses this example to remind us that God is a much better father than any human could ever be, and as his children, we can trust God to provide us with good things.

    A Fathers Greatest Joy

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

When a child pursues truth and walks in wisdom, it makes their father joyful because he can trust his children to make good choices, represent his family well, and focus on what is rightregardless of their circumstances. Seeing your child walk in truth assures you that they can handle whatever comes their way.

Bible Verses About Cursing Your Parents

The way you treat your parents will have a huge effect on your life. God commands us to honor our mother and father and let me say this, you only have one life so dont waste it. There will be a day when your parents will die and all you have is memories.

They fed you, changed your diapers, gave you clothes, shelter, love, etc. Love them, obey them, and cherish every moment with them.

Thank God because there are some people who dont have a mom and dad on earth anymore. Cursing your parents doesnt always have to be to their face.

You can curse them in your heart as well. You can talk back, roll your eyes, wish harm, talk about them negatively to others, etc. God hates all this. We are in the end times and there will be more and more disobedient children because many parents stopped disciplining and teaching their kids Gods Word.

Kids are being influenced by evil things on websites, TV, bad friends, and other bad influences. If you cursed your parents you must repent now and apologize. If you are a parent and your child cursed at you then you must discipline them, and help teach them with the Word of God. Never curse back, dont provoke them to anger, but continue to love and help them.

What Does Scripture Mean By Mother And Father

When God issued this commandment to Moses on Mount Sinai, He demonstrated His sovereign plan for real relationships, writes Don Wilton, And just as we are to honor the One who created us, so we are to honor those who were chosen to carry out Gods plan for our creation- our fathers and mothers! In a world riddled with broken marriages and pieced together families, it is more important than ever to stop pointing fingers and start embracing Gods command to honor each other. Many of us are fathers and mothers, either by blood or adoption. If we are caring for someone, or they us, we are to honor them.

God said, above all else, to love Him and each other, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We all know what its like to be a child. Many of us know what its like to be a parent or caregiver. I believe this commandment was so important to God because we are so important to Him. Family is important to God. We are His family. When we honor our families, its a direct reflection of how He loves us. Often dysfunctional and broken, He loves us.

    Do Not Embitter Your Children

The Power in Honoring Your Parents

Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

Our families are one of the greatest proving grounds for our faith. Our children, spouses, parents, and siblings are most likely to see us at our weakest, in the moments when its hardest to do and say what is loving. In his instructions to households, Paul cautions fathers not to cause their children to become bitter, as it can discourage them.

The Principle Of Honoring Parents In Our Lords Teaching

Our Lords teaching on the honoring of parents is fairly extensive. This passage provides us with great insight into the command as God intended it, and as the scribes and Pharisees sought to circumvent it:

And the Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered together around Him when they had come from Jerusalem, and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed. And the Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands? And He said to them, Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.

Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men. He was also saying to them, You nicely set aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. For Moses said, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER and, HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF28 FATHER OR MOTHER, LET HIM BE PUT TO DEATH but you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, anything of mine you might have been helped by is Corban , you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down and you do many things such as that .

    Do Not Exasperate Your Children

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and motherwhich is the first commandment with a promiseso that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Fathers, do not exasperate your children instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

The Bible doesnt just tell children to obey and honor their parents. It also tells fathers not to do or say things that deeply frustrate their children. The ESV translates do not exasperate your children as do not provoke your children to anger.

A fathers goal should be to bring out the best in his children. If a father angers or frustrates his children, hes leading them into sin and steering them away from what God desires for them. This can be incredibly difficult, and following Pauls admonition requires fathers to be intimately attuned to their childs heart and sensitive to their weaknesses.

Hope For When Honoring Your Parents Is Hard

    Chelsea Stanley

Growing up, I had a good relationship with my parents. Honoring and obeying them came relatively easy. But when I hit adulthood, things got complicated.

Their divorce during my first year of marriage brought up wounds I didnt know existed. I felt shame and anger. Honoring them became hard. For the first time, I struggled in my role as their daughter.

Thankfully, around that time, I started attending a church that helped me see how the the good news of Jesus Christ wasnt just for my initial salvation, but for my everyday life. It could even change the way I viewed myself as both a daughter of my Heavenly Father and of my earthly parents.

Maybe you, too, struggle in your role as a grown child. Friend, there is hope. God has adopted you, Christian, into his family and changed your name to his. See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God, John writes, and so we are .

Gods Word says that because we are redeemed sons and daughters of God, our roles as sons and daughters of man can also be redeemed. In particular, these five truths about what Christ has redeemed us from and to have freed me from deadly patterns of sin and led me into life-giving patterns of grace and godliness. You and I may have very different experiences, but I pray that God will use these truths to encourage, convict, and challenge your soul.

What Does The Bible Mean To Honor Your Parents

    12 Bible Verses

There is no question the Bible tells children of believers to honor their mom and dad. Based on the Fifth Commandment many biblical passages make this clear. In the Old Testament and other ancient cultures, honoring others was very important. To not honor and obey parents was a serious offense. Why? For one, it was an offense against God and his law. It was also an offense against the parents reputation. This was because parents and their families were intimately connected with their extended families and clans. Dishonoring parents could bring about the demise of the extended family or worse. Dishonoring parents was also against societys culture. In some circumstances, dishonoring parents brought the death penalty.

Today, we see the same thing in honor cultures. Having high regard for ones parents, elders, and others in authority is essential to the fabric of those societies. Dishonoring ones parents could bring about severe punishment or death. However, what does the Bible mean when it says children must honor their parents?

Christ Has Redeemed You From Shame Over Your Parents Sin

Have you ever felt ashamed of your familys history or reputation? Just as Jesus Christ frees us from blaming our parents, he also releases us from shame over their sins.

Shame can be Gods grace to us when we are caught in our own sin , but we misplace our shame when we start to feel guilty over the sins of others. God does not look at you and see the sins of your parents, dear one. He looks at you and sees the righteousness of his son .

Where Does The Bible Talk About Honoring Your Mother And Father

Honor your father and mother is mentioned twice in the Old Testament and six times in the New Testament . Originally appearing in Exodus as Moses introduced the Ten Commandments to Gods people, the command is again repeated in Deuteronomy 5:16.

In ancient times, and even in some cultures today, deceased ancestors were honored. In Israel, the honor due to parents has a definitely covenant context and pertains to accepting and passing on the Torah, according to the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible. It was a passing down of their faith from generation to generation.

Jesus spoke of this commandment to the Pharisees in Matthew 15:4 , and again when He spoke of commandments that prohibit wrong actions and attitudes against others. He also mentioned it when speaking about those who will inherit the kingdom of God in Matthew 19:19, and Luke 18:10.

In Ephesians 6:2, Paul emphasizes honor your father and your mother as the first commandment with a promise: so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth.” When Paul wrote these words, the covenantal promise of occupying the land God had prepared for them had already come to pass. So, why would Paul repeat it? Why is it important for us, New Testament believers, to remember?

The entire Old Testament is the story of Jesus. The entire Bible points to Him, and we as His chosen and adopted people look forward to the promise of His return.

    Honor Your Father And Mother

Honor Thy Mother and Father? (with Greg Laurie)

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

The Israelites were commanded to honor their fathers and mothers as part of their covenant with God. Dishonoring their parents dishonored God. But this isnt just an ancient commandment for the Israelites. Its for us too.

Paul repeats this commandment to Christians in Ephesians 6:13:

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother , that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.

And in Colossians 3:20, Paul paraphrases this commandment and connects it to our relationship with God:

Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
