Why Is It So Important That I Repent
To understand why you need to repent, you must understand the impact of sin in your life. I want to consider sin from two perspectives, the perspective for the unbeliever and the perspective of the believer.
For the unbeliever, repentance is needed to restore relationship.
If you dont know Jesus as your Savior, then your sin has put a separation between you and God. You cannot enter into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ until you first admit you are a sinner. You agree with God that you, just like every other person on this earth, has fallen short of what he requires. Once you acknowledge this and recognize your need for a savior, it opens the door for your relationship with God to be restored.
For the believer, repentance is needed to restore fellowship.
Once you have received Christ as your savior, your relationship with God is now intact. However what sin does is it puts a wall in the fellowship between you and God. Have you ever made a decision to sin? Have you ever ignored the conviction of the Holy Spirit to engage in activities that you knew were sinful? I know I have. After doing that what is the last thing you want to do? Spend time with God. You dont want to pray, worship, read your bible, and you are definitely not going to be around other believers. In this instance, while you are still in relationship with God, your fellowship is broken. The only way to restore that fellowship is to repent and turn from your sin.

What Will God Do
David has committed two heinous sinsadultery and murder. One commentator points out that David had broken at least six of the Ten Commandments!

- He had stolen
- He had lied and deceived , and
- He had coveted
The sin of this man who had been so greatly blessed was an insult to the name of God. Why have you despised the word of the Lordyou have despised meyou have utterly scorned the Lord . What will God do with a man who has, despite his many privileges, scorned him, despised him, and broken one command after another?
1. God might justly have said to David, This is the end for you. Your reign is over. Thats how it was for Saul, and that it how it will be for you.
None of us would be surprised if we read that God raised up the Ammonites , and that their army routed the armies of Israel, and David and all his sons fell by the sword. That is what happened to Saul. Why would the same not be true for David?
Maybe you think this is what God should have done to David. How can God allow David to remain as king after acting like this? But that is not how God dealt with David. Retribution is not Gods way with his own children. If it was, none of us would be here today.
3. Or again, God might have said, If David wants to seek me, I will forgive him. Im always open to reconciliation, but the ball is in Davids court. He must make the first move and unless he does, I am done with him.
Gods Kindness Leads To Repentance
19. Romans 2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that Gods kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
20. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some regard slowness, but is being patient toward you, because he does not wish for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Repentance And Faith Are Two Sides Of The One Salvation Decision
Does the book of John ever address the question of eternal life? Of course it does. More than a dozen times the terms eternal life or everlasting life are used in John. This could be said to be the theme of the book, which often tells us how individuals may receive eternal life. Yet never once does the book of John use the word repent. Since repentance is required for salvation, isnt it strange that the book in the Bible that has eternal life as its theme would never use the words repent or repentance? John says that we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, through believing in Him or coming to Him. Very many times the word believe is used in reference to the way to eternal life. Yet the decision for salvation is never called repentance.
The book of Luke also shows us the way to salvation, but strangely says little about faith in Christ in this connection. The term most used to describe the decision for salvation in Luke is some form of repent. We see this, for example, in Luke 5:32. But then, in Luke 7:50, Jesus tells a woman who had committed many sins, but had come to Him for forgiveness, Thy faith hath saved thee go in peace. It is really the only place in Luke where faith is mentioned in connection with the salvation of a sinner.
The Power Of Gods Word That Brings Change
Nathan said to David, You are the man David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord.
Nathan tells David a story. Commentators often say that Nathan told a parable, but Nathan did not say to David: Hey, Ive got a story to tell you.
The king was the chief justice in the land, so it was Davids job to pass judgment on various crimes. Nathan presents his story as a case that needs the kings verdict, and David is glad to hear the case.
Nathan tells the story of a great injustice. There were two men in a certain city: one rich, the other poor. The rich man had many flocks and herds. The poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. This lamb ate the poor mans food, drank from his cup, and lay in his arms. The poor man loves the little ewe lamb that is his.
A traveler arrived at the house of the rich man. The rich man welcomed the traveler and wanted to put on a feast. But he did not want to use one of his own flock, so he steals the poor mans lamb and prepares it for his feast.
David hears this case, and he is absolutely furious: Then Davids anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity .

God Commands Every Man To Repent

Examples Of Repentance In The Bible
Lets take a look at two examples of repentance, one from the Old Testament and the other in the New Testament.
The Repentance of David This Old Testament example includes King David. We find repentance specifically in 2 Samuel 12:13, but both chapters help us better understand the situation.David committed adultery with a married woman named Bathsheba. She became pregnant, and in an attempt to cover up his wrongdoing, he called for the murder of her innocent husband, Uriah. After Uriahs death, when Nathan the prophet confronted David, the king eventually repented.This turn was good, but consequences remained. Davids baby died. The grace of Jesus Christ covers sin, but sometimes people experience societal and situational consequences, fractured relationships in need of mending, and other circumstances we must face due to our sins. As with David, however, God opens wide the door for us with forgiveness. Not even sin can keep us from His embrace. So go ahead, offer that repentance. Nothings too bad to stand in Gods way.
The Repentance of Saul, Also Known as Paul
In our New Testament example, zealous and religious describe Saul well. He worked hard, persecuting those who opposed what he believed in, especially those who were followers of Jesus.
From this point until his death, Saul, perhaps more widely known as Paul, served Jesus. He turned from wrong and evil waysactions that seemed right to him and many othersand started serving Jesus instead.
Teshuva And Temple Sacrifice
In Old Testament days, when the Temple stood in Jerusalem, an important part of teshuva was animal sacrifice. Laying an offering on the altar was instructed by God for covering of sins. But it was never complete and final.
Through His prophets, God made it clear that He desired something more:
For I desire steadfast love, and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God, rather than burnt offerings.
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Since there is no Temple today, and clearly, the offerings were not enough to please God, what are we to do?
