Who can forget the moment when the sinful woman enters a respectful dinner to wash Jesus feet with her tears and dry them with her hair? She then proceeds to pour perfume on him. Not a single expensive drop was spared.

The Thanking Person Of Jesus

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. ~ Psalm 118:1

In the Gospels, we see wonderful examples of Jesus giving thanks. We often see Him give thanks to the Father for the basic provision of food and for hearing His prayers.

But the Gospels also record how Jesus offered thanks and praise in even the most adverse situations. For instance, in Matthew 11 the Lord Jesus speaks of how He had been rejected repeatedly by cities Hed visited. In this rejection, Jesus suffered the slander of the very people He had come to save. But what was His response? Jesus didnt complain, bemoan His terrible situation, or feel sorry for Himself. No. In verses 25-26, He instead prayed this prayer:

I extol You, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for thus it has been well-pleasing in Your sight.

How wonderful Jesus is! Here we see Jesus actually extolling the Father, acknowledging His will in all things, including the rejection and slandering. He gave thanks to the Father in all situations and for all things.

How Do We Give Thanks

Giving thanks is so much more than working up feelings of gratitude or saying âthank youâ when someone does something nice for you. As we saw above, giving thanks is directly tied to your relationship with God.

We see this exemplified time and time again in the New Testament.

From the âsinful womanâ who put oil on Jesusâ head and poured perfume on his feet as an expression of her thankfulness to Zacchaeus paying back fourfold from what he took from others , thankfulness and gratitude became a hallmark of their life.

Now, if you have placed your faith in Christ, it is Godâs will for you to âgive thanksâ .

To help you live a life of thankfulness, weâre going to walk you through thanksgiving verses that will lead you to give thanks in âevery circumstance.â

We Give Thanks Because God Is Faithful

As if Gods goodness and love were not enough, Scripture also highlights Gods faithfulness as a reason for thanksgiving. Psalm 100:5 says that Gods faithfulness continues throughout all generations.

Gods faithfulness means that God will always act in a way that is consistent with who God is, as revealed in Jesus. It means that we can trust that there is no place in our lives where God will not be with us there is no path we walk where God will not journey beside us.

Furthermore, like Gods goodness and love, Gods faithfulness is enduring. Gods faithfulness cannot be denied. Even though we may prove unfaithful at times, Gods faithfulness is consistent.

Scripture reminds us that the saying is true . . . If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself . God is faithful to Gods goodness towards us God is faithful to Gods love for us.

The goodness, love, and faithfulness of God do not change with the external circumstances of our lives. They are rooted in the truth of who God is. Thus, these three realities of Gods work and presence give us hope and encouragement in our spiritual lives.

We can give thanks at all times and in all circumstances because we know that Gods own will for our lives, in some way, is being worked out .

Where have you seen Gods goodness in your life? When have you felt Gods love? Where have your recognized Gods faithfulness towards you? These truths become the foundation of our life with God.

What Does The Bible Say About Ungratefulness

Grumbling and ungratefulness are the opposite of thankfulness, and these are sins that God hates! When the sons of Korah grumbled against Moses and Aaron and God in the wilderness, they were questioning Gods goodness and faithfulness in providing for them.

They were ungrateful for the authority God had given to Moses and Aaron. For this sin, God split open the ground under them and it swallowed the sons of Korah.

Failure to glorify and give thanks to God leads to futile thinking, foolish and darkened hearts, and a downward spiral into sin and depravity.

84. Romans 1:21-22 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.

85. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

86. Philippians 2:14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing.

88. Philippians 2:21 For all the others look after their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
