El Echad: The One God

Malachi declared that God is the one God. Listen to Malachi 2:10: Have we not all one Father? Did not oneGod create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our fathers by breaking faith with one another? .

This is a declaration of monotheism, the belief in one God. This was very unique in the time of the ancient Jews because almost everybody was polytheistic. They believed in many gods and even accepted the gods of others as true gods. However, the God of the Bible claims to be the one God, the only God. In fact, this was the great schema or declaration of Israel. Listen to what Deuteronomy 6:4 says: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORDisone . To Israel, God was the one God and every other god was false.

Today, there is a similar attack on the monotheism of the Scripture and that is pluralism. People are proclaiming that there are many ways to God and some proclaim that the gods in all the different religions are the same god. However, Scripture clearly teaches that there is one God and that the only way to him is through Christ. Listen to what Jesus said, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me .

El Echad, the God of the Scripture is the one God. There are no other gods and there is only one way to God. The only way to have a relationship with the God of the Bible is through his Son, Jesus Christ.

Yahweh Shamma: The Lord Is There

Yahweh Shamma is the name given to the New Jerusalem, a future city that was prophesied by Ezekiel through a vision. This name speaks of Gods special presence with the people of God. Look at what Ezekiel shares in his vision.

The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits. And the name of the city fromthattimeonwillbe:THELORDISTHERE .

The Israelites at this point were discouraged because they had been exiled by Babylon and their city and temple had been destroyed. However, God gives Ezekiel a vision about a future city that would be far better than any previous city. In that vision, he says that the name of the city will be The Lord is there. This would have been tremendously encouraging to Ezekiel and the Israelites because earlier in Ezekiels prophecies Gods presence had left the temple and the city of Israel before it was destroyed .

It seems that there will be a future glorious city and a temple in Israel that are marked by the presence of God eternally. However, this truth of God being present with his people is still true today. God has indwelled every believer and he will abide in them forever. Look at what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:1920:

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Yahweh Sabaoth: The Lord Of Hosts Or The Lord Almighty

The name Yahweh Sabaoth pictures God as the ruler of the angels, the armies of heaven. We see this image throughout the Scripture. Look at what the Sons of Korah said in Psalm 46:7 : TheLORDofhosts is with us the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah .

The phrase Lord of hosts pictures God as a warrior and one who fights for us and protects us. We get a good picture of this when Elisha is protected by an army of angels that are surrounding his house . Certainly, we can be sure that God is always protecting us with angels. They are spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation . The Psalmist said this about angels: For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways .

He said that God will guard you with his angels in all your ways. This includes ones eating, drinking, sleeping, working, etc. God, the Lord of hosts, is always protecting his saints. In fact, Jesus warns his disciples about not offending or looking down on Gods children because of this reality. He says: See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. ForItellyouthattheirangelsinheavenalwaysseethefaceofmyFatherinheaven .

The angels of the Lord of hosts are always watching the master, listening to his words. They are ready to respond at any injustice or offence against his little ones. We thank you, God, that you are the Lord of hosts and that you are always protecting your saints.

Yahweh Roi: The Lord Is My Shepherd

Yahweh Roi is the name that David uses of God in Psalm 23. He says, The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not be in want .

We can be sure that as David was caring for his sheep, feeding them, and protecting them, this allowed Davids mind to think about how God did the same for him. Similarly, the Lord is our Shepherd and we shall not want . This speaks of the weakness of his children. We are prone to wander, and we cannot protect ourselves. Therefore, we need a shepherd that leads, provides, and protects us a shepherd that gives us rest and makes sure that we lack nothing. God is that shepherd.

In fact, what makes our shepherd so wonderful is that he even died for us. Shepherding during Davids time could be very dangerous. Shepherds were exposed to extreme temperatures, wild animals such as lions and wolves, and even robbers. A shepherd that did not really care for the sheep would simply run away when attacked. But good shepherds were willing to give their lives for the sheep. Look at what Christ said about himself: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep .

Our Lord is not just a shepherd. He is the good shepherd. He provides for us, cares for us, and even gave his life for us. He is our Yahweh Roi. Thank you, Lord.

El Elyon: Most High Or Most High God

The name El Elyon means the Most High. El Elyon is the name that designates God as the sovereign ruler of all the universe.10 It emphasizes Gods supremacy and sovereignty over everything. We see this name used in reference to Abraham and his defeat of four kings in Genesis 14. Even though Abraham only had 318 trained men , he took on the four kings and their armies, and he defeated them. The King of Salem, Melchizedek, in response to this victory, blessed Abraham. Look at what he said: And blessed be GodMostHigh, who delivered your enemies into your hand .

Melchizedek blesses Abraham by blessing God. He said that El Elyon, GodMostHigh, delivered Abraham from his enemies. This victory was so spectacular that it was clear that it could have only been done through the Most High God.

The name El Elyon should comfort us because it teaches that God is in control everything. There is nothing on the earth that happens apart from his control. He is the sovereign over all things. Similarly, Look at what Nebuchadnezzar says about the Lord Most High.

Nebuchadnezzar, the most powerful king on the earth at that time, said the Most High does what pleases him both in heaven and on earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: What have you done?

Principles For Studying Gods Names

There are important methodological considerations for studying Gods names. First, we should pay attention to what the Scriptures explicitly say about Gods names. For example, God explains his name to Moses and in the New Testament we are told that Jesus is given the name above every name .

Linguistic principles should guide the interpretation of Gods names. Along with attention to context, we should use etymology with caution. It is safest to proceed here when the Bible does. For example, Scripture unpacks the meaning of YHWH and the meaning of Jesus name .

We should observe what God reveals about his name. The Lord reveals himself first as El Shaddai and later more fully as YHWH . Nevertheless, it is the same God. YHWH tells Moses that he is the God who made a covenant with the patriarchs . In the New Testament God reveals his name to include the Son and the Spirit . But this one God is still the God of the patriarchs .

Finally, we should note what the Bible does not say about divine names. The Scriptures never teach Israel to use Gods name as an amulet or magical formula. Likewise, despite the deference for Gods name, the Bible never tells us not to pronounce or say his name.1

The Name Yahweh Represents A Covenant Relationship

Yahweh is forever attached with Gods covenant with Israel. Therefore, it demonstrates Gods intimacy and that he is a personal God. Yahweh, also, has a personal relationship with us and he will never leave nor forsake us. Look at what Paul says in Romans 8:3839:

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God because he is in covenant with us. This covenant was cut and sealed with the blood of Christ, and therefore, God will remain faithful to us. We are in covenant with him. He is our Yahweh.

What About The Rest

The God you find in the Old Testament is not different from the God revealed through Jesus Christ in the Gospels, nor the God that Paul spoke about in the New Testament. However, the Greeks and Romans they spoke to had many different ideas about the gods, which is why you find many various titles and names for God in the New Testament . Just like the Old Testament authors claimed that their various titles for God all referred to the one true God known as Yahweh, the apostles who wrote the New Testament believed that Jesus was the physical embodiment of Yahweh himself. God has a way of working quietly within us to prepare our growth and eternity with Him, even though we may not see it. Most rebel occasionally at the process but we keep trying to say yes to whatever He asks.

Lets start with Genesis 1:1: In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. This God is named Elohim . It is also a plural word that lets us know the Holy Spirit and Jesus are included. Two other Hebrew words: Elyon and Adonali .

Revelation 1:8: I am alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the Ending, says the Lord, Who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. This is a definition of God Jehovah.

Overview Of The Names Of God In Scripture

Elohim: The plural form of EL, meaning strong one. It is used of false gods, but when used of the true God, it is a plural of majesty and intimates the trinity. It is especially used of Gods sovereignty, creative work, mighty work for Israel and in relation to His sovereignty .

Compounds of El:

• El Shaddai:God Almighty. The derivation is uncertain. Some think it stresses Gods loving supply and comfort others His power as the Almighty one standing on a mountain and who corrects and chastens .
• El Elyon: The Most High God. Stresses Gods strength, sovereignty, and supremacy .
• El Olam: The Everlasting God. Emphasizes Gods unchangeableness and is connected with His inexhaustibleness .

Yahweh : Comes from a verb which means to exist, be. This, plus its usage, shows that this name stresses God as the independent and self-existent God of revelation and redemption 3:12).

Compounds of Yahweh: Strictly speaking, these compounds are designations or titles which reveal additional facts about Gods character.

Adonai: Like Elohim, this too is a plural of majesty. The singular form means master, owner. Stresses mans relationship to God as his master, authority, and provider .

Theos: Greek word translated God. Primary name for God used in the New Testament. Its use teaches: He is the only true God He is unique He is transcendent He is the Savior . This name is used of Christ as God in John 1:1, 18 20:28 1 John 5:20 Tit. 2:13 Rom. 9:5 Heb. 1:8 2 Pet. 1:1.

El Olam ~ The Everlasting God

God never changes. Psalm 90:1-2 says, “Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” What a wonderful thing to know that in a changing world God does not change! Time does not alter God. Psalm 90:4 says, “For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.” Well, what do all these verses mean? There are no surprises to God. As Corrie Ten Boom says, “There’s no panic in heaven.” God knows the past and the future at the same time. Jesus is our El Olam. He is the King of the Ages. Hebrews 1:8 says, “But unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.”

Isaiah 43, 1-3b says, “But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and He that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name thou art Mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
