I would suggest you honor them and pray for mothers as a group, without making them stand up, raise their hand, receive a flower, or any other public identification that will create those questions of awkwardness.

Mothers Day Brings Mixed Emotions
For many, Mothers Day is an awesome celebration of life and all the joys of being a parent.
My wife is an awesome mom to our kids. Mothers Day is a joy in our house. .
But Mothers Day is also a mixed bag for myself and my friends.
My mother passed away from cancer in 2012. Mothers Day is a mark of my own grief.
My friends husband died suddenly in 2015 while in his 40s. His mother is grieving the death of their only son.
My friends struggled with infertility for years. Every Mothers Day is a reminder of their struggle.
My friends had unexpected miscarriages and grieve their unborn child. Mothers Day is a day of grief.
My friends have had their children fall into addictions, rebellion, and walking away from the Lord. Mothers Day always seems to remind them of how they failed in raising a godly child.
Some mothers chose abortion and live every Mothers Day with the reminder of what could have been.
As you can see, Mothers Day can be a mix of emotions.

Mother’s Day Sermon 2011
Mothers Day, 2010Last year, Drew was born on March 4 and I was on maternity leave for the following two months. My first Sunday back at church was Mothers Day, and I was asked to preach. This was a little intimidating, considering most of the topics I had been meditating on for the last many weeks had to do with a) poop b) breastfeeding or c) poop. Our church was in a year-long series through the Bible called Bible 360, and my sermon landed right in the middle of the Wisdom Literature, in the book of Proverbs. My sermon was addressed to Drew, so I called it: Proverbs for My Son. Somehow I came out of the poop-induced-brain-haze, because lots of people said kind things about the sermon. A couple of preachers I know even call Mothers Day and the Sunday closest to the Fourth of July: Throwaway Worship. As in: Well, were not really worshipping God this Sunday, but well get back to that next week. I was told again and again by different preachers that my sermon needed to be about mothers or an angry mob of moms would follow me home with pitchforks.
