What Does The Bible Say About Bullying

Leave The Vengeance To God

What does the bible say about bullying?

When someone bullies us, it can be tempting to retaliate in a similar manner. Yet God reminds us in His Word that we need to leave the vengeance to Him. We still need to report the bullying. We still need to stand up to those that bully others, but we should not retaliate in the same way. God brings us adults and authority figures to deal with the bully:

Leviticus 19:18You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself I am the Lord.

2 Timothy 1:7Gods Spirit doesnt make cowards out of us. The Spirit gives us power, love, and self-control.

Romans 12:19-20Dear friends, dont try to get even. Let God take revenge. In the Scriptures, the Lord says, I am the one to take revenge and pay them back. The Scriptures also say, If your enemies are hungry, give them something to eat. And if they are thirsty, give them something to drink. This will be the same as piling burning coals on their heads.

Proverbs 6:16-19There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Matthew 7:2For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.

Standing Up To Bullies

As Christians, we have a responsibility to stand up for the weak and the oppressed. When we see others being bullied, we need to stand up for them and get them help.

When we are being bullied, we have a responsibility to serve others by standing up to the bully too. We stand up to bullying not only for our own sake but for others who are also being bullied.

We also stand up to bullying for the bully him or herself so that they can get the help that they need.

Parents, we know that Daniel and Esther were bullied because of ant-Semitism. Conversations about bullying because of race and ethnicity can be awkward, but we need to have them. In the dark shadow of the Holocaust, we know how quickly hate can grow.

May our children be the guardians on the wall who keep watch and stand up against bullying and hate.

To Those Who Are Bulliedgod Is For You

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Isaiah 41:11-13 All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear I will help you.

2 Timothy 12:7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

The Relationship Between Bullying And Suicide

Media reports often link bullying with suicide. However, most youth who are bullied do not have thoughts of suicide or engage in suicidal behaviors.

Although kids who are bullied are at risk of suicide, bullying alone is not the cause. Many issues contribute to suicide risk, including depression, problems at home, and trauma history. Additionally, specific groups have an increased risk of suicide, including American Indian and Alaskan Native, Asian American, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. This risk can be increased further when these kids are not supported by parents, peers, and schools. Bullying can make an unsupportive situation worse.

And everyone at some point will become a witness to acts of bullyinga reality that carries its own corrosive emotional current. • make wise choices

We need to encourage kids to look out for people being treated unfairly and to stand up for them.

To help stop bullying, parents, church leaders, community leaders, and educators should be aware of the warning signs and work together to create safe and healthy environments for kids.

Offer support to kids who have bullied and who have been victimized to help them heal.

Jesus taught the golden rule to Treat others as you want them to treat you .

This is more than just a good saying. The Golden Rule is the Christ followers way of life. We must model and teach this attitude over and over until its ingrained in our kids hearts.

Empathy and love are the opposite of bullying, and the biggest part of the solution. And when we model this, teach this, and encourage this in kids, we can help stop bullying.

Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.Psalm 127:3

The word heritage comes from the root meaning to get or inherit. It is an honor and responsibility to be entrusted with a little one from God. We stand beside him to shepherd their growth and development, to advocate for them, and provide for their needs while theyre in our care.

What Are Practical Ways To Respond To Bullying

Episode #5 | The Faith Kids | “Bully Be Gone”
  • If you see something, say something. 28% of students grades 6-12 say that have been bullied at school. Yet only 20-30% of those who are bullied actually report when they are bullied. Whether you see someone being bullied or whether you are being bullied yourself, getting help from adults is one of the best ways to prevent future bullying. Something extremely important to remember is that it isnt tattling to report bullying. Tattle-tales only tell on someone when they just want to get them in trouble. But reporting bullying is motivated by the desire to protect others. Reporting bullying protects you, the person being bullied, and everyone else around you.
  • Stick up for your friends and other classmates if you see them being bullied. 70.6% of students say that they have witnessed bullying on campus, yet very few of them actually defend the person being bullied. Some students encourage bullying by cheering the bully on or even join in on the bullying themselves, by most students watch and do nothing because they are afraid. However, when a bystander intervenes, more than half the time, bullying will stop within 10 seconds. Doing nothing helps bullies because it allows them to continue bullying without consequences. We need to have courage and stand up for those who cant or wont defend themselves. Of course, use wisdom in all situations. If theres a situation that looks dangerous, get an adult to help or call the police.

    Children Need Nurture And Guidance

Train up a child in the way he should go even when he is old, he will not depart from it.Proverbs 22:6

When planting vines and some bushes, gardeners will attach them to a framework, like a pole or trellis, to keep them from spreading out of control. Kids need solid structure to keep their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual growth on track too. This means we are present in their lives, supporting their growth and development, and leading by our godly example.

    What Weve Learned About Bullying

    • Bullying affects all youth, including those who are bullied, those who bully others, and those who witness bullying. The effects of bullying may continue into adulthood.
    • There is not a single profile of a young person involved in bullying. Youth who bully can be either well connected socially or marginalized, and may be bullied by others as well. Similarly, those who are bullied sometimes bully others.
    • Solutions to bullying are not simple. Bullying prevention approaches that show the most promise confront the problem from many angles. They involve the entire school communitystudents, families, administrators, teachers, and staff such as bus drivers, nurses, cafeteria and front office staffin creating a culture of respect. Zero tolerance and expulsion are not effective approaches.
    • Studies also have shown that adults can help prevent bullying by talking to children about bullying, encouraging them to do what they love, modeling kindness and respect, and seeking help.

    What About Cyberbullying

Many of the same principles that apply to regular bullying will also apply to cyberbullying, but the practical aspects require some special attention for several reasons.

  • It can be done at any time, day or night.
  • It can be done at a distance the bully doesnt need to be physically present.
  • Embarrassing photos or messages can be posted and shown to more people at once. It can also be very difficult to delete or remove these things once posted.
  • Cyberbullying in many cases can be done anonymously with no other witnesses. It is completely dependent on the student being bullied to report what has happened.
  • Here are some practical ways to combat cyberbullying:

  • Again, if you see something say something. Most students are afraid that their parents will take away their phone or computer if they tell them whats going on. However, if you are open and honest about whats happening, your parents will want to support you and help resolve the issue and shouldnt take away those things if you havent done anything wrong.
  • Dont respond to cyberbullying. Remember, they are looking to get a reaction of some kind out of you. If you dont say anything, then they dont get what they want.
  • Dont be afraid to block or unfriend people on social media who are bullying you. This is the easiest way to stop receiving negative messages.
  • If you are being sent sexually explicit material or threatening messages or photos, tell your parents immediately and report it to the police.

Is bullying something new? Hardly! Although 65% of today’s youngsters have experienced bullying, this unkind activity was commonplace in Bible times. In it’s best light, it may have been considered a fair response to evil of some sort, but in it’s worst light, it definitely took place. Rudeness, insisting on one’s own way, coercing, ganging up on another, threatening these are all forms of intimidation that is, bullying.

Ask which words describe the brothers . Do we ever act in these ways? From here, you are ready to talk about school-yard bullying, ganging up on other kids, being caught up by “the mob” complex. Then, you’ll want to discuss better solutions to problem situations, which will vary according to circumstance and age. Can reasoning with the aggressor help? Are you courageous enough to speak up for the under-dog? Are there school or public officials who should be informed? Could prayer be a help?

Now you may want to introduce the David and Goliath story from I Samuel 17. What method did the Philistines use? What would have been the conventional response? What was David’s response? How did he arm himself? Why wasn’t he bullied by Goliath? How does this relate to a playground bully?

Orphans Displaced And Refugee Children And Children Living In Poverty Need Special Care

Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor Zechariah 7:10

Children are vulnerable even in good circumstances, but when theres poverty or violence, kids can suffer real damage. The Bible singles out orphans for us to help. Those without fathers are close behind orphans. And children living as refugees or displaced by conflict or living in extreme poverty are also vulnerable. There is no social or financial safety net for them no one to provide for their nurture or needs. God asks people who worship him to help take care of kids in such vulnerable places.

What Does The Bible Say About Bullying & What Should Christians Do About It

Titus 3-2 what the bible says about bullys and those being bulled

For many students, bullying is an everyday issue that they have to deal with at school. It happens more frequently than you might think. According to the American Medical Association, by the time students finish school, nearly half of students have been bullied at one point or another. A study done by the Center for Disease Control in 2016 showed that 20.2% of students were bullied in the past year on campus and 15.5% had been bullied electronically .

Up until the past few decades, bullying was overlooked by most people, being viewed as kids just being kids or a normal part of growing up. But incidents such as the Columbine shooting or the recent Netflix series 13 Reasons Why have made bullying and harassment a more regularly discussed topic.

As I will show, bullying is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Christians should never bully or tolerate bullying in any form.

How Do I Read The Bible

In this video, Dieula offers some advice.

Different people read it different ways. And thats totally fine. Want to find the best way for you?

Some people dig into a single verse and try to think of a million things it might mean. Others read it just like they would read any other book, cover to cover. Others read it out loud, by themselves or with a group, which often helps them understand the words and meanings better. But, honestly, if you just want to read the Bible, then read it. Hunker down in a comfy chair and read a whole chapter or two. Try to wrap your head around the big story.

Some tips: Find a translation of the Bible that speaks to you. There are dozens of versions available now, and most of them are faithful to the original languages. Some sound like Shakespeare. Some sound like everyday conversation. Try a few out and see what grabs you.

You dont have to read the whole Bible from beginning to end. There are a few parts that some readers find tough going, and those could derail your best intentions. Try skipping around to find the stories that interest you. We suggest Genesis, Exodus, Ruth, 1 Samuel, Daniel, Jonah, or one of the four books about Jesuss lifeMatthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

After youve read a few stories, try reading a complete letter from the New Testamentlike maybe the four chapters of Philippians or the five chapters of James. Read a Psalm out loud. Or go through Song of Songs with your significant other.
