Great Falls Tribune Building Will Become New City Church

With the exception of some occasional scrounging of equipment and parts for other newspapers in the Gannett media empire and the morning deliveries of the Tribune from the print site in Helena, the Great Falls Tribune building has not seen much activity of late.

Over the past couple of months, though, members of New City Church have been hauling off everything from computer servers and office equipment to the massive Goss Metroliner printing press that, from 1979 until July 12, 2020 produced the Great Falls Tribune.

When Gannett put the building up for sale, the presses both the 3-story-tall Metroliner and a smaller Goss Community, along with a lot of junk, spare parts and other items accumulated over the years were left in place, all left for a new owner to contend with. That was not a good selling point, Pastor Nate told the Sun Times.

While theres not much going on from the street view, inside the building is undergoing a transformation for a second life as the new home for New City Church.

The church had already acquired 19 acres for future construction, and when the riverside location was suggested. It was Nates wife, Rachel, that expressed the first interest in the Trib building, six months prior to the acquisition of the building. At first, it didnt appear that the Trib building offered the parking space needed.

Pastor Nate went on to marry Bob and Cindy Johnsons daughter, Rachel.

The Great Falls Development Authority has released its housing market demand assessment.

The assessment, conducted by Concord Group, projected that there is demand for about 450 new housing units per year in Cascade County over the next 10 years.

Based on the expected split between owners and renters, the assessment projected that it breaks down to a need for 190 new rental units and 250 new for sale/new ownership units per year over the next decade across income levels.

The former Tribune building has been sold and New City Church is moving into the space.

The church is hosting a garage sale this weekend, Feb. 4-5, to sell items and furniture left in the building, as well as other donated items.

LPW Architecture is the design team and Detailed Construction is the general contractor on the project.

According to the church, the project will pave part of the grassy area between the Tribune and Applebees to add parking, for a total of about 300 spots. They are working to retain as many trees as possible.

No permits have yet been issued from the city planning office for construction.

New City Church Gives Back To Great Falls

New City Church Great Falls MT

GREAT FALLS About 300 volunteers came out to New City Church Sunday morning to serve their community. Men, women, and children of all ages split up to complete 15 citywide projects in the span of just three hours.

Church leaders directed volunteers toward various service efforts, including local parks, single mothers, foster youth, and the rescue mission.

Each team tackled a different project. Some wrote letters for foster youth. Others washed cars and provided child care for single moms. And many worked on restoring nine local parks.

The event meant a lot to executive pastor Nate Swanson and his wife Rachel.

We know that were just two people. And its hard to make a big difference when youre just two. But when you have a massive church behind you that can just go and get your city and love our city, you can make such a huge difference, Rachel said.

New City Church is one of many churches across the nation to dedicate this weekend to community service.

You can find photos of different outreach efforts throughout the country under the hashtag: #serveday19.

When the pastor took his first look inside the building back on August 19 2021, he thought, we can make this work.

New City Church goes beyond the sanctuary walls to work in, and for, their community. They adopted a local elementary school. We found that there were kids who could not afford lunches, Pastor Nate told the Sun Times, and even though there were programs to help, the kids and their parents had to deal with paperwork. Some families would find that overwhelming.

So the church found a workaround, they volunteered to pay for the lunches for the kids whose family could not afford the meals, no strings attached. The church is also active with area nonprofits, such as Great Falls Rescue Mission.

The big Metroliner press has been sent to be recycled. Where the three-story tall press once was, there is now a gaping hole. The mail-room once housed an inserter, a machine that was used to assemble the different sections of the Tribune into a single newspaper. The inserter also added those weekly grocery store inserts into your Wednesday papers. The inserter has also gone to the scrapyard. The room next door is where the Rivers Edge printing press sits, collecting dust and cobwebs.

During our interview, the pastor and his dad spoke about the media in Great Falls, expressing some sadness that The Great Falls Tribune has faded from its former glory.

What a breath of life, of fresh air New City is! Being Heavily involved in ministry before moving to this beautiful City, we had become burdened and some what burned out due to church politics etc… Upon moving here we were treated by neighbors who said they had a great church. Having been going now for months I agree. The messages come from very Real, Raw and Passionate pastors who love God and Love people. The people of New City reflect this as well. Great Messages, Great People, in Great Falls. HA! Who knew! lol. We love our new church.
