The Church Of Whats Happening Now
Every day for the past eight months, I have spent a big chunk of every day connecting with my family of faith in Cuba through their messaging platform of choice, WhatsApp. We text and share recorded messages and videollamadas on a regular basis with many friends there. We belong to several WhatsApp groups, including the Kairos Center, two churches, and the Fraternity of BaptistsHermandad . When I first heard friends talking about WhatsApp, the name brought to mind the old Flip Wilson comedy show, and his classic sketch, The Church of Whats Happening Now. Flips character, Reverend Leroy, would start his sermons by saying, We dont tell it like it used to be, or how its gonna be in the future we talk about whats happening now.For the Fraternity and many of its churches, WhatsApp has become their medium for being the church of whats happening now. Theres more tragedy than comedy, though, in seeing and hearing whats happening now in Cuba . Its also inspiringly beautiful to see how the church is being the church in that context, being the vanguard of hope in a desperate situation.

An Uninvited Kanye West Gets Escorted Out Of Skechers Hq In Manhattan Beach
An unannounced Kanye West wasnt negotiating a post-Adidas home for his Yeezy shoes when he was escorted out of Skechers corporate offices Wednesday.
As a pastor, it always makes me nervous when creation wants to outdo the Creator, Fisher said. When he turned in that direction, it made me very nervous, because it was him creating the platform where he kinda says whatever he wants and does what he wants, with no level of accountability.
Still, many in the church community rejoiced at seeing a Goliath in pop culture put Jesus front and center. Sunday Service sprouted from Calabasas and became a traveling phenomenon, landing at Coachella on Easter Sunday and stopping in various churches across America.
Pastor Jamal Bryant, who leads New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the Atlanta area, welcomed West to worship with his Sunday Service Choir in September 2019. Bryant opened the door with enthusiasm after getting the call, taking it as an opportunity to reach new audiences.
A whole swath of people who dont ordinarily go to church came, Bryant said. It was a major outreach opportunity. Churches are getting older, so to see a rush of young people who are excited about God in the church with one of the largest living musical legends of this generation, it was impactful.
My older generation didnt have a clue who he was, Bryant said with a laugh.
In no other atmosphere would you hear about the church on TMZ, Bryant said.

Kanye Wests Tee Is A Fashion Dont Someone Else Owns White Lives Matter Trademark
Kanye West cant cash in on White Lives Matter merchandise because the trademarked phrase belongs to two civic-minded Black radio hosts in Phoenix.
The outbursts quickly sacked much of his portfolio and influence. Adidas, Gap and Balenciaga have cut ties members of his team and teachers at his Donda Academy school have resigned in protest and hes repeatedly been banned from Instagram and Twitter.
His activity also stands in contrast to his previous efforts to put God at the forefront. For the last several years, Wests Sunday Service Choir had put a renewed spotlight on gospel music, empowering young people in the church as he sought to make Christianity cool.
For many who drew strength from his God-focused music, the last month stings particularly hard.
One group really thinks was just a one-off album and he was just being creative, so they dont really attach Christianity to Kanye, said Pastor Michael J.T. Fisher of Greater Zion Church Family in Compton. Then there is a group that really took his album, and the things he said in that season, as him turning over a new leaf and hed found this new relationship with God. I think theyre very disappointed with the direction he seems to be heading in.
When West launched his Sunday Service campaign from a secretive Calabasas location in 2019, the backdrop wasnt the rosiest.
