The Basilica of Saint Patrick’s Old Cathedral, sometimes shortened to St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral or simply Old St. Patrick’s, is a Catholic parish church, basilica, and the former cathedral of the Archdiocese of New York, located in the Nolita neighborhood of Lower Manhattan, New York City. Built between 1809 and 1815 and designed by Joseph-François Mangin in the Gothic Revival style, it was the seat of the archdiocese until the current St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Midtown Manhattan opened in 1879. Liturgies are celebrated in English, Spanish, and Chinese. The church is at 260264 Mulberry Street between Prince and Houston streets, with the primary entrance on Mott Street. Old St. Patrick parish merged with Most Precious Blood parish, and the two churches share priests and administrative staff.

The Old St. Patrick’s church building was designated a New York City landmark in 1966, and the cathedral complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It was declared a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2010.

Can Anyone Go To Mass At St Patricks Cathedral

Yes, everyone is welcome to attend Mass, a sacred Catholic worship ritual thats been happening here for nearly 150 years. To be respectful during Mass, be sure to silence cell phones and other devices. It is customary to dress respectfully and remove hats when entering the building. The pews are open seating, and those with small children tend to keep towards the back. You will know when to stand or kneel by following the crowd.

Non-Catholics are welcome to join and participate in Mass, but receiving communion is a ritual reserved only for Catholics. Instead of receiving the communion wafer, non-Catholics may cross their arms over their chest to receive a blessing. The entire ceremony typically lasts about 45 minutes.

The History Of New Yorks Great Cathedral

With an ever-increasing number of Catholics arriving in New York City in the mid 19th century, the Archbishop John Hughes suggested building a new cathedral to accommodate them. Construction began in 1858, funded by contributions from New York Catholics, both wealthy and poor, and was completed in 1879. Today, the cathedral serves as the headquarters of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.

Over the years, the cathedral has been a site of worship for many as well as an attraction for tourists to admire.

Sometimes St Patricks Cathedral is confused with The Basilica of Saint Patricks Old Cathedral, also known as Old St. Patricks. Old St. Patricks is located on Mulberry street in NoLita . It was the largest Catholic church in New York at the time it was built. It also served as a filming location for the baptism scene in the famous American crime drama, The Godfather. Its worth a visit in its own right, but its not the St. Patricks Cathedral, which tends to rank on more tourist itineraries.

How people use the cathedral has changed over the years to some degree. Its become a popular venue for weddings, though theyre not as free as touring! If you want to say I do here, expect to pay upwards of $14,000 to rent the venue for a weekend. Fun fact: The Great Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald married his wife Zelda Sayre here in 1920.

The cathedral was designed to be one of the largest of its kind with two spires rising 330 feet above the ground. Presently, the cathedral seems a little less ambitious if we compare it to the , located just in front.

St. Patricks Cathedral is built of brick clad in marble, with a very characteristic Neo-Gothic-Style, making it a very unique building, especially when compared to the architecture surrounding it.

Inside, the church has two impressive pipe organs, of 3,920 and 5,918 tubes and a sculpture of Pietà, three times larger than Michelangelos Pietà in St. Peters Basilica, in the Vatican.

Buried In The Crypt Of St Patricks Cathedral

Underneath the high altar of St. Patricks Cathedral is the final resting place of the past nine Archbishops of New York. The only layman to join them is the Venerable Pierre Toussaint.

Why the exception for Toussaint?

Toussaint was a New York philanthropist active in the 1800s, considered by many to be the father of Catholic charities in New York. Hes got an interesting backstory: born into slavery in Saint-Domingue and brought to New York, where he was freed and dedicated the rest of his life to helping people in need. He was originally buried at Old St. Patricks Cathedral, but his resting place was moved to St Patricks Cathedral in honor of his legacy. In 1996, Pope John Paul II declared him Venerable, another step towards achieving sainthood in the Catholic Church.

Early last month, amid protests against police violence in the wake of the George Floyd killing, the pink brick wall surrounding the cemetery of the original St. Patricks Cathedral in NoLIta was spray-painted with graffiti, while a storm window protecting one of the churchs soaring stained-glass windows was broken.

None of the graffiti BLM, PIG EW appeared anti-Catholic, suggesting that those wielding the paint cans saw the wall primarily as a blank surface that could serve as a billboard for their cause.

But the Basilica of St. Patricks Old Cathedral, at Mott and Prince Streets, is no stranger to civil unrest, and that very wall played a central role in deterring violence two centuries ago, when very different antagonisms roiled the citys streets.

The wall was put up almost 200 years ago to protect the church from rioters so it could keep its doors open for the waves of immigrants that landed here and were welcomed, said Rev. Brian A. Graebe, the churchs pastor. When was it last attacked? Probably the nativist riots.

But still the organ speaks with a voice resonant of the turbulent era in which it was created.

An Opportunity To Share Our Faith Journey Together

Last week I wrote about the upcoming retreat we will have in our parish the first week in Lent next year. I am looking that far in advance because it is the most engaging and enriching retreat experience I have ever sought to offer to the people of the parish. It will not only involve three nights of presentations, it will open the door to meeting weekly during the next year to grow in our faith. Am I trying to open a door that seems too intense or time consuming? One of the common answers we give when people ask how we are doing is: I am busy. That is good. But what can we do in all this busyness that will really enrich us. We are in the midst of Major League Baseballgames, National League Football games, and College Football. Whether you watch sports on TV or attend in person, the games from beginning to end take approximately three hours. There are 162 baseball games for our favorite team plus additional games for teams that make the playoffs. There are 17 regular season games in the NFL followed by the playoffs. College football has about 12 games per team plus the playoffs. Each of these games takes approximately three hours of our time to watch. To go to a game takes much more time than that, plus the expense of tickets and refreshments. To watch 20 games of our favorite teams would consume about 60 hours of our time. That is more time than we would spend coming to Mass and Holy Days in one year.

Opening And Late 19th Century

The new St. Patrick’s Cathedral opened on May 25, 1879. Thirty-five bishops and six archbishops attended the dedication. St. Patrick’s was met with a generally positive reception from the media. The Baltimore Sun, for example, called it the “finest church edifice on the American continent”. Not all critics spoke of the cathedral positively journalist Clarence Cook authored a criticism that architectural historian Robert A. M. Stern characterized as being “underpinned with religious and ethnic bigotry”. Cook perceived the facade as being full of “clumsy repetition”, but he wrote of the interior: “Words cannot express the paltry character of the internal finish of this vaunted structure.” The new St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Temple Emanu-El comprised the first non-Protestant houses of worship on the midtown section of Fifth Avenue. At the time, the cathedral was far removed from the developed portions of the city. The first bishop consecrated in the new cathedral was the Michael J. O’Farrell of Trenton, New Jersey, who became the first bishop of the Diocese of Trenton.

Art Inside St Patricks Cathedral

The bronze doors that welcome you into the cathedral are hefty. They weigh over 9,000 pounds but are designed to be opened with one hand.

But dont breeze past them too quickly. Theres a lot to see here. The doors depict a number of saints, including:

• St. Frances X Cabrini, called the mother of the immigrant, who founded an organization for Italians immigrants in the late 1800s
• St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the lily of the Mohawks, the first Native American woman to be canonized by the Catholic Church
• Mother Elizabeth Seton, daughter of New York, the first native-born U.S. citizen to be canonized by the Catholic Church

Inside, the High Altar will catch your eye. Its 57-foot bronze canopy, called a baldachino, glitters gold against the white marble arches and contrasts with the elaborate stained glass windows behind. Youll feel like youve been teleported out of gritty New York into a pristine realm of the divine.

St Patricks Cathedral is also known for its Pietà sculpture created in 1906 by William Ordway Partridge. Pietà depicts the Virgin Mary mourning the body of Jesus. It is located slightly behind and to the right of the main altar. Partridges sculpture is three times as large as Michaelangelos work of the same name.

Two Things About The Cathedral You Probably Didnt Know

Dont forget the music. There are 19 bells in St Patricks Cathedral, each named after saints. Originally, there were iron rods attached to clappers that would ring the bells, but since 1952, the bells have been electrified and can now be played from a keyboard in the gallery.

What else? Heres something you shouldnt look for: Theres a hidden window in the cathedral. Its in keeping with Gothic cathedral tradition that glory is to be given to God, who sees things in secret that humans cant.
