Gop Lawmaker: The Bible Says If A Man Will Not Work He Shall Not Eat

This storys headline has been corrected. A quote from Rep. Jodey Arringtons remarks at a congressional hearing has also been added.

One lawmaker is citing a godly reference to justify changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Rep. Jodey Arrington recently quoted the New Testament to question the strength of current work requirements.

The biblical passage, 2 Thessalonians 3-10, was a rebuttal to one of the hearings expert witnesses, a representative of the Jewish anti-hunger group MAZON. It is also a familiar refrain to anyone who has watched past debates about SNAP.

House Republicans have historically cited the verse if a man will not work, he shall not eat as justification for cutting some adults SNAP benefits. Arrington referenced the verse in a discussion about increasing the work requirements for unemployed adults on the food stamp program. But critics say that advances a pernicious myth about the unemployed who receive SNAP.

The verse in question applies specifically to people who can work or otherwise contribute to society but choose not to, said theologians from several denominations who spoke to The Post. There is a perception, among some voters and lawmakers, that many adult SNAP recipients are exactly this sort of freeloader.

Compassion For The Hungry

25 Important Bible Verses About Feeding The Hungry

As many know when crowds of people want something, most will stand in lines for days to get it. This was the case in the time of Jesus. There were thousands of people who did not want to leave Jesus to go get some food. So, people began starving. Out of compassion, Jesus miraculously multiplied the food that his disciples had with them, which was seven loaves of bread and a few fish, to feed 4,000 men, plus many women and children who were there.

In Matthew 15:32-39, the story unfolds:

Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”

“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”

He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven full baskets of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was 4,000 men, besides women and children.

History Of Feeding The Masses

This was not the first time Jesus did this. According to the Bible, in John 6:1-15, prior to this mass feeding, there had been a separate event at which Jesus performed a similar miracle for a different hungry crowd. That miracle has come to be known as the “feeding the 5,000” since 5,000 men, women, and children were gathered. For that miracle, Jesus multiplied the food from a lunch that a faithful boy gave up so Jesus could use it to feed the hungry people.

Bible Verses Of Encouragement For The Poor

In the Bible, it is clear that those in poverty are close to Gods heart. Jesus himself was born into poverty and gave up his heavenly riches when he came down to earth. Constantly, the poor are said to be blessed and we are instructed to value integrity over riches. God has not forgotten the poor and instead calls all believers to join in his restorative work to bring hope and opportunity to them.

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? James 2:5

You would shame the plans of the poor, but the Lord is his refuge.

Proverbs 19:1Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.

Psalm 72:12-14For he delivers the needy when they call, the poor and those who have no helper. He has pity on the weak and the needy and saves the lives of the needy. From oppression and violence, he redeems their life precious is their blood in his sight.

Proverbs 22:2The rich and the poor meet together the Lord is the maker of them all.

Pope Francis Says Feed The Hungry Or Else

What Does the Bible Say About Poverty?

The Bible talks about feeding people a lot. Jesus first miracle is turning water into wine at a wedding feast. He turns five loaves of bread and two fish into a meal for 5,000 people. He repeatedly shares meals with tax collectors and sinnersthe people that the rest of society ignores or despises.

So with all this focus on food in the Bible, its no surprise that Pope Francis came down hard on those who are not working toward feeding the hungry around the world. The planet has enough food for all, but it seems that there is a lack of willingness to share it with everyone, he said during a homily for the general assembly of Caritas Internationalis. He continued on to say that the powerful will face Gods judgment they will have to answer for their care of the poor and the environment .

Theres not much thats ambiguous in the Popes words. Feed the hungry. Care for those who have nothing. Do not forget those around the world who are suffering from lack of food and drinking water. They might live in your own city or a continent away, but you are responsible for helping them.

Jesus is also pretty direct when it comes to caring for others. Feed the hungry, he explicitly tells the disciples, for just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. . Over and over again, Jesus tells us through his words and actions to care about peoples physical needs.

In Prayer Ask God For Help In The Fight Against Hunger

The hunger Sustainable Development Goal calls for an end to hunger around the world by 2030. However, since 2014, the number of hungry people worldwide has been slowly rising, and the estimated increase in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic equaled the increase over the previous five years combined.

New projections confirm that hunger will not be eradicated by 2030 without bold actions to accelerate progress, especially actions to address inequality in access to food.

Great Deliverer, we pray against the ripple effects of COVID-19. We pray that Your love will guide our steps as we continue on the path to eradicating hunger and helping people lift themselves out of poverty.

Matthew 2: Prayer For Food For The Hungry

Romida and her 1-year-old son, Salman, are two of the 880,000 Rohingya refugees living in southern Bangladesh who depend on humanitarian aid for everything, especially food.

Hunger is a problem that has plagued humanity for millennia, and it continues to haunt us. The United Nations and World Food Programme 2021 report The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World, projected that between 720 and 811 million people in the world faced hunger in 2020. In addition, an estimated 22% of children under 5 were stunted , 6.7% were wasted , and 5.7% were overweight .

Nearly one in 10 people in the world go to bed hungry each night. Join us in prayer for the hungry around the world and others who are working to feed them.

Just because hunger has persisted doesnt mean it has escaped Gods notice: God always keeps his word. He gives justice to the poor and food to the hungry, . His expectations of His people havent changed, either. When God gave Moses the law for His people, one was to let some crops stay in the fields so the poor could glean them for their families .

Every year we recognize the struggle against hunger with World Food Day on October 16. In honor of the founding date of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, people around the world affirm their commitment to eradicating hunger.

I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.Matthew 25:35

Romida cooked up a feast, combining her token groceries with her WFP ration of rice and lentils.

If We Ever Hope To Solve Our Nation’s Hunger And Poverty Crisis We Must Know The Truth About It

2:00 AM on Sep 29, 2019 CDT

If you were curious what white nationalism cloaked in Christianity looks like, I recently received a letter informing me of the root causes of hunger and poverty in our nation. The letter stated causes such as, “genetic racial inferiority, entitlement mentality, undisciplined spending, laziness and government subsidized medicine for illegitimate children,” all while citing numerous Scripture verses culminating in Jesus words, “The poor will always be with you.”

Unfortunately, too many of our views about the causes of hunger in our nation are made up of one anecdotal experience, Facebook posts, or our favorite news source. Rarely are our opinions informed by actual research, a comprehensive biblical view, or proximity to the problem.

If we ever hope to solve our nation’s hunger and poverty crisis, we must know the truth about it. What are its causes? Why are people poor and hungry? Are we collectively responsible for the health and well-being of our impoverished brothers and sisters?

Another reason is educational attainment. In our 21st century reality, you must graduate from high school and get an additional degree, whether it is a technical degree, two-year degree, or college degree, to give yourself the greatest chance of not living in poverty. However, if you are living with hunger and poverty you are much less likely to graduate. This perpetuates a generational cycle.
