Can we trust God when he allows hard things in our past, present, and future?

I was crying with a friend last week about this.; Its not like God hasnt had to teach me to be still before. Weve been here before, God and I, and I cant believe I am here again doubting, fearful, anxious.

Every time a storm comes into my life I wrestle with fear over trust.

  • Homelessness
  • Where I really doubted God even cared about us.
  • My first miscarried
  • Chronic Illness that brings chronic pain
  • I am struggling to be still and trust God.

    The Inconvenient Fear Not Verses

How about Judges 4:18? That one was in the list.

Thats the verse in which the Israelite woman Jael went out to meet King Sisera and said to him, Come, my lord, come right in. Dont be afraid. So he entered her tent and she covered him with a blanket.

And we all know what happened next, right?

Thats not exactly a fear not verse Id want to hang on my wall.

Or I Samuel 28:13 The king said to her, Dont be afraid. What do you see?

Do you want to guess who was talking there, and to whom? Ill give you a minute.

That was King Saul telling the witch of Endor not to be afraid when the ghost of Samuel arose at her conjuring.

Nope, that one isnt too encouraging either.

There are a few more like that, but you can have the fun of finding them yourself, if you feel so inclined.

Besides those kind of creepy fear not verses, what I found when I studied all the fear not verses in the Bible was encouraging . . . in a couple of ways.

For one thing, Ive thought a lot about the people who feel guilty for their fear, and how the weight of fear not hangs over them when they continue having panic attacks or nameless anxieties. I think looking closely at the fear not Scriptures really can help relieve that guilt instead of simply increasing it.

Also, when you look closely at the fear not Scriptures, youll see that when our Lord speaks to people who are afraid, He doesnt treat their fear like a sin. He treats it more like an injury. Here, let me make this better.

Have No Fear Do Not Be Afraid

The most commonly repeated phrase in the whole Bible, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, is Fear not! or Have no fear! or Do not be afraid! or Be not afraid!

    • It is often claimed that this phrase appears exactly 365 times in the Bible, one for each day of the year! This might be an inspiring claim, but it is not biblically accurate.
    • The phrase “Fear not! appears only slightly over 100 times in the Old Testament, as well as about 44 times in the New Testament .
    • The exact count will depend on which Hebrew and Greek words one includes, since there are several close synonyms in each language .
    • The main Greek word group expressing “fear” is the adjective phobos , the verb phobe , and the adverb aphobs .
    • One can attain a higher total count if one includes biblical texts that mention people who are afraid .
    • An even higher total can be attained if one also includes some positive phrases that could be considered equivalent, such as “to trust God/Jesus” or “to be at peace” or “to rest in God.”

Another closely related and very common biblical theme is that people should “fear the Lord” or have “fear of the Lord” ; but these ideas are not contradictory, when understood properly:

    Why Cant I Trust God

How Many times the LORD said in the #BIBLE “DO NOT FEAR”

I am afraid.; Do you live with fear?; What kind of things are you afraid of?

    • Poverty
    • Lack of Control

    Those are just some of my fears.;

Now listen, these are not ridiculous or unfounded fears.; Each and everything on my list of fears comes from a real place in my past or present.; These are hard things that have happened in my life and I am afraid of the hurt being repeated.

Fear Not Directly From God To A Person Or Group

I saw that many of them were to a specific person or group of people, like when He spoke through Moses to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 1:21:

See, the Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession of it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, told you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Now, thats beautiful and inspiring, and we can learn about God by the way He led the people of Israel.

    BUT.

    This isnt directed to everyone.

Ive written before about the importance of focusing on WHO a Bible message is directed to. When its clearly directed to one person, does it apply directly to us? Maybe and maybe not. Can we learn from it? Yes, always.

MANY of the fear not verses are spoken from God directly to a person. To Abram in Genesis 15:1, to Moses in Numbers 21:34, to Joshua in Joshua 8:1, to King Ahaz in Isaiah 7:4. If you study all of these fear not verses, youll learn a lot about how God works in specific situations. And it can be heartening and encouraging. But its not appropriate Biblical exegesis to assume that Gods specific words to a person or group are written directly to you.

One day the specific situation might be yours, and you might receive a specific fear not from the Lord about it. But until then, well continue to be encouraged by these examples.

Bible Verses About Fear Not To Claim To Be Still

    Why is it so hard to be still and know that He is God? Honestly, for me, it is because I am afraid.; I know I know, there are hundreds of Bible verses about fear not, but Yall, fear is a living breathing force in my everyday life.;

Im not proud to admit that, but God revealed it over the past few weeks learning to be still.; For each and every time He said be still, I said, but God Can you relate? As we move forward in understanding how to be still we are now going to face the enemy of stillness in our lives.; Fear.

Fear Not In The Bible: Overcoming Worry And Fear

Have you ever felt that fear was stopping you from what God has called you to do?

Its okay to have fear, but I am here today to encourage you to turn to God whenever you are afraid- all based on what the Bible says about fear.

I heard somewhere once that it says fear not in the Bible 365 times. Whether or not it is true or not is not the priority of our concerns; the priority is how we can take something that everyone struggles with, fear and worry, and how to turn it into a way to serve the Lord.

We have talked about how fear is the dream killer. It stops us from stepping out into faith in all the ways that God wants us to step out in faith.

Here is the big thing about fear: if there is fear, we cannot be the confident women we were created to be. I cant imagine the disappointment that God must feel when He created us for a specific purpose, just for worry to get in the way from us accomplishing those great things in His name!

So what does the Bible actually say about fear?

How Many Times Does Fear Not Appear In The Bible

How many times does fear not appear in the bible MISHKANET.COM

Years ago someone told me that fear not was found in the Bible 365 times; once for each day of the year.; I thought about printing my own calendar and placing a different fear not verse on each day.; What a source of hope and confidence it would be to begin each and every day by meditating on the fact that we dont have to fear whatever we have to face.

Much to my chagrin, fear not nor any of its close derivatives can be found in the Bible 365 times.; Personal friend and close colleague, Pastor Nathan Boehm, took the time to do further research on this subject and posted his findings on his blog that I recommend for your reading .

Although not found 365 times in the Bible, fear not was spoken as an imperative from the lips of Jesus, and therefore should be taken as a direct command to be adhered.

There are many earthly reasons to fear today; the failing economy, bad reports from the doctor, global unrest, terrorist threats, and hopeless predictions from political prognosticators just to name a few.

However, as followers of Christ we have greater reasons to fear not; God will not fail you , God will not forsake you , God is with you , God will help you , God knows you by name , God can do marvelous things , It is Gods pleasure to give you the kingdom , and Christ is the First and the Last .

Simply put, Jesus said, Do not fear .; Hearing it once from Jesus is just as good as hearing it 365 times.; He said it, that settles it!

Before 8 Am This Morning I Was Feeling Overwhelmed Which Is A Fancy Word For Fear

Saying I’m “overwhelmed” makes me sound busy and sophisticated when what I really want to do is crawl under my covers and hide.

Instead, I sat down with a pen and paper to see why? . But what I did find was a pile of sneaky lies slithering around in the shadows of my thoughts. Hissing and making me feel small, helpless, and alone.

I wrote them down. They probably aren’t that much different than your lies- the good ol’ standbys. “Your work isn’t good enough. He/she is smarter, better, more productive than you. You suck. You’re stupid. Etc.”

I know they aren’t true, but still they spew. And fill me up with poison sometimes. Then suddenly, I am very afraid.

    So this morning, I prayed.

“Jesus, I’m afraid. Apparently there is a “fear not” for each day of the year, but I need one for each minute, please. And since I’m a big scaredy cat, could you please teach me about fear so I don’t feel so dumpy?”

    This is what I heard,

Fear is a cause to pause. An invitation to stop and seek My way forward.

I thought about the circumstances in scripture when The Lord says, “fear not.” These are pivotal times when His people have paused to ask for direction and courage. They are taking big risks; facing their giants; going into battle; saying unpopular things; traveling into unchartered territory; being persecuted for their faith.

Fear Not From Jesus To His Disciples

Since believers of today are also Jesus disciples, then that makes these verses seem more like they apply directly to us. Like these:

    • Matthew 10:19, 26, 28, 31 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say. . . . So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. . . . Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. . . . So dont be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
    • Luke 12:4, 7, 32 I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. . . . Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Dont be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.. . Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.
    • John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Yes, Id agree that these Scriptures apply to us. Our Lord Jesus wants to make us fearless and full of peace, even in the face of the enemy.

    But notice something.

When Jesus said these things to His disciples, they were still a very fearful group of men. These are the same men who all scattered in fear when He was arrested.
