The Reality Of Dreams

Dreams can appear to be very real. Sometimes you wake up scared, sometimes mad and sometimes sad, yet you realize after a while that it was just a dream and you settle down. The Bible speaks of this in Isaiah 29:8It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.See All… when it says, “It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite”. You may dream of eating or drinking, but when you awake you are still empty. It may have appeared real, but it was not.

Something else to consider here is that dreams are not necessarily supposed to mean anything.

Consider Ecclesiastes 5:7For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.See All…:

“For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.”

This verse tells us that a multitude of dreams can be worth absolutely nothing. We are not to trust in them, however real they seem we are rather to fear God.

Recurring Dreams About Snakes

If you are having recurring dreams about snakes I would pay special attention to that. I would write them down and begin praying.

Usually, when we have recurring dreams its a type of warning or something God is trying emphasizes.

I like what Joe Ibojie says about them. He states that recurring dreams or those that are similar in nature may occur because we have ignored Gods message the first time.

We see this in Genesis 41:31

And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

Does It Come To Pass

If this is the first time that you have had a dream you think might be of God, then you will not be able to benefit as of yet from this way of knowing if your dream is from God because it is, however, to be seen if the dream comes to pass.

However, if you are more familiar with dreams from God, then think about the other dreams you have had that have come to pass. What similarities does this dream have with others that you have been given by God?

You see, the final proof, if a dream is from God, is the results. Did it come to pass?

There are two vivid accounts of this at work in Acts chapter 9 and 10. One is with a man named Ananias who God told to pray for Saul of Tarsus for healing, and the other was with Peter being told to go and preach to the gentiles.

If you follow these four simple steps, you will be able to determine if your dream is from God. If it is, God is more than ready to help you understand what your dream means.

What Does The Bible Say About Snakes

Is Dream Interpretation Biblical?

If we gather information about snakes or serpents and look at the law of first mention we see the story of the serpent in the Garden of Eden .

The Law of First Mention:Some Bible students use the law of first mention as a guideline of study in which they find the first time a word, idea, or doctrine is introduced in Scripture to better understand the other references. The idea is that the first time it is mentioned will be the simplest, most understandable reference from which the others build.

We see that Satan uses the snake to lie tempt, and bring forth the fall of man.

Not a good start for the snake.

According to Smiths Bible Dictionary,

Hence, as a fruit of the tradition of the Fall, the serpent all through the East became the emblem of the spirit of evil, and is so pictured even on the monuments of Egypt.

Throughout the East the serpent was used as an emblem of the evil principle, of the spirit of disobedience and contumacy. Much has been written on the question of the fiery serpents of Numbers 21:6, 8 with which it is usual to erroneously identify the fiery flying serpent of Isaiah 14:29 and Isai 30:6 The word fiery probably signifies burning, in allusion to the sensation produced by the bite.

Majority of scripture paints snakes as evil and cunning. Even Jesus tells us as Christians we will have authority over snakes and scorpions. He is speaking of spirit enemies here.

What Scripture Says About Dreams For Us

Although most dream references in Scripture refer to certain dreams God has given to a certain person , Scripture does mention a few things about dreams:

    • Acts 2:17: In the End Times, many believers will see dreams. Although it doesnt specify what exactly theyd see, one can infer it might be a vision of Heaven, Christ, or of the future.
    • Ecclesiastes 5:7: This verse seems to warn against placing too much hope in dreams. Much dreaming . . . meaningless. Therefore, we shouldnt dwell too much on dreams, and instead, turn to Scripture to hear Gods messages to us.
    • Jeremiah 29:8: This verse warns us against placing our faith in the dreams of others. Sometimes false prophets will speak about dreams that did not take place to sway Gods people. Christians have to be careful whenever anyone speaks about a dream and should test everything said about that dream against Scripture.

& 6 Josephs Grain And Stars

Jacobs favorite son Joseph has two dreams that throw a wrench in the family dynamic. In the first dream, Joseph and his brothers are gathering grain into sheaves. Jospehs sheaf stands upright, but the brothers bundles of grain bow down to Josephs sheaf.

This aggravates Josephs brothers. Not only is Joseph the favorite son, now he thinks that hes going to rule over the rest of them?

Then Jospeh has another dream. This time, the sun, moon, and eleven stars bow down to him. This peeves his brothers and his father. Really, kid? You think were all going to bow to you?

    Jokes on them .

Biblical Examples Of God Communicating Through Dreams

Of course, this article cannot dive into every instance of dreams in Scripture. However, it will highlight a few instances of dreams and why the matter:

    • Joseph : You cannot discuss Joseph from Genesis without diving into dreams. Granted, most of the time he spent interpreting dreams , but he did have a dream of his own before he entered Egypt . These dreams hinted that Josephs family would bow to him in the future. This comes to fruition when they come to him for food during a great famine. In essence, the dream had a purpose to foretell the future.
    • Daniel : Like Joseph, he often interprets dreams rather than has them, but in Daniel 7 he witnesses a terrifying dream of four beasts. Theologians have attributed each beast to a certain kingdom . The dreams served to show events and kingdoms to come.
    • Joseph :Joseph, Jesus father, sees an angel in a dream who warns him to flee to Egypt before Herod can take the life of his son . This dream served as a warning.
    • Pontius Pilates wife :When Jesus stands at trial with Pontius Pilate, his wife warns Pilate against having anything to do with him, because she knows of his innocence . The dream informed her about the true nature of Jesus.

This article shows all the dreams in Scripture and the meaning behind them. Dreams often employ symbolism to teach a lesson, divulge elements of the future, or help us discover more about God.
