What Does The Bible Say About Generational Curses

What Is A Generational Curse

What does the BIBLE SAY about generational curses?

A generational curse is believed to be passed down from one generation to another due to rebellion against God. If your family line is marked by divorce, incest, poverty, anger or other ungodly patterns, you’re likely under a generational curse. The Bible says that these curses are tied to choices. Deuteronomy 30:19 says we can either choose life and blessing or death and cursing.

Our families have the greatest influence on our development, including the development of our patterns of sin. Some people even assert that family or generational curses are passed down along generational lines. This belief comes from Old Testament passages which say that God punishes the children and their children for the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation .

Whether or not families inherit spiritual curses, it is obvious that patterns of sin are passed down through families. Everyone sins but just as culture, ethnicity, and gender steer our patterns of sin in particular directions, so do our families.

We inherit many traits and preferences from our parents that aren’t always a positive influence on ourselves or others. When we acquire a sinful habit or belief that negatively affects our lives or those around us, this is known as a generational curse. It is the shadow side of behavior passed down through the generations but is it possible to break this cycle of suffering?

Are There Consequences For Having Ancestors In Freemasonry

As discussed previously, Exodus 20:3-6, which is re-quoted by Moses in Deuteronomy 5:7-10 are the key verses quoted regarding false teachings on generational curses and breaking them, so we will clarify further on these verses and make a few more important comments about them.

The context here is that people worship and serve other gods. The result very importantly is not an automatic curse – in fact, the word curse does not appear in these verses at all – but that the Lord is visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the third and the fourth generations of those that hate Me. Note: The key point being those that hate God.

Does this say that there is an automatic curse on future generations because one member of the family took part in Freemasonry or was a Freemason? No! What does it say then? Here are several very important points for us to notice.

  • There are two qualifications in order for a person to come under this punishment. First, to worship or serve other gods but also to be a person that hates or rejects God. Unless you qualify on both counts this so called generational curse teaching or breaking generational curses does not apply to you.
  • Indeed the next verse underlines this where the Lord will show loving kindness to thousands who love Him and keep His Commandments.
  • It is the Lord who does the visiting it is not an AUTOMATIC punishment. It is what He does, not what membership or organization you belong to, or even what the Devil does, but it is what God does.
  • What Does The Bible Say About Generational Curses

You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.Christians cannot be demon possessedRelated Truth:

Evil & The Power Of The Cross

Are There Generational Curses Still Today?

We should never underestimate the allure and intrigue of the supernatural world. The war between good and evil is serious and we should remain firmly rooted in God and His Word.

We should never diminish the power of the Cross. As a new creation in Christ, we have no spiritual connection with our ancestors.

Finally, remember that Gods power is superior. We must steadfastly resist the devil as no practise or belief can ever exercise power over Gods plans.

What About Issues That Run In Families Such As Alcoholism

There are things that do seem to carry from one generation to another. Beyond family traits such as skin, hair, and eye color, there are other things, like mental illness or alcohol and drug addiction, that pass from parent to child and beyond.

Science indicates there are certain genetic predispositions that carry from family member to family member, not to mention things such as abuse or a penchant for anger or gambling that are environmental influences.

But these are consequences and genes, not curses. While our genetics might make us predisposed to cancer, addiction, or depression, that is not necessarily our destiny or our own doing.

Paul reminds us in his letter to the early church in Corinth that we are a new creation in Christ .

We take our troubles to the cross, ask Christ to heal us, and earnestly work with Him along with other gifts of God, such as medication and mental health counselors to seek spiritual deliverance.

For Jesus Christ is the way and the truth and the life . Every one who repents and calls upon the name of the Lord is free, reconciled to God for eternity.

So, the next time you find yourself worrying about a generational curse, take heart. Drag your sin to the cross, turn your heart and your life toward Jesus, and rest secure in the knowledge that for Christians, there is no such thing as a curse.

Where Does The Idea Of Generation Curses Come From

People have taken the following Scriptures to teach Generational Curses:

You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. Ex. 20:4-6, NIV

And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation. Ex. 34:6-7, NIV

Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins also because of their ancestors sins they will waste away. Lev. 26:39, NIV

Our ancestors sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. Lam. 5:7

Confess The Sins Of Your Sinning Parent To God The Father

The next thing you are going to need to do is to fully confess out the sin or sins of the sinning parent to the Lord. As you will see in the Scripture verse I will list below, God is wanting you to acknowledge and then confess out those sins direct to Him. Here is the verse:

But if they confess their iniquity and THE INIQUITY OF THEIR FATHERS, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember

Why would God want you to confess out the sins of your father or mother when you had nothing to do with their sins in the first place?

I believe the main reason could be that God may want you to know exactly why these demons are coming after you in the first place and that reason is because of the severe sins your sinning parent has committed against the Lord.

God wants you to have full knowledge as to what is going on behind the scenes in the spiritual realm, and by confessing out what sins you know your sinning parent has committed against the Lord you are showing Him that you have the knowledge and the understanding that these original sins is what has caused all of these events to occur as they have done in your own personal life.

When you get into this part of the prayer, you just simply confess out exactly what heavier sins you know your sinning parent has committed against the Lord.

    Breaking A Generational Curse

While your family history has an effect on you, you are not bound by these generational curses.

You have the choice to continue in the footsteps of your ancestors and pass on these curses to your children, or with great diligence, you can end those curses over your life and future. You get to decide if the generational curse continues or ends.

There is great freedom in breaking a generational curse and creating a healthier relationship for yourself, the people you love, and the generations to follow.

Prayer Points To Break Generational Curses

Here are five prayer points to start with if you dont know what prayers to pray against generational curses:

  • Father God, reveal to me every generational curse in my bloodline from both sides of my family through your spirit in Jesus name.
  • Christ has redeemed me from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for me. Every demonic force reinforcing generational curses in my life, leave my life alone, and go back to hell where you belong in Jesus name.
  • It is written the curse causeless shall not come , and it is also written whom the Son has set free is free indeed. Generational curse of sickness, I command you to leave my life right now and go back to hell where you belong. Jesus has set me free, so you have no cause in my life.
  • It is written in 2 Corinthians 8:9 Jesus became poor so that I might become rich by his poverty. You curse of poverty from both sides of my family, I declare that you are canceled from my life and future generations in Jesus name.
  • I cancel and nullify family curses that have been causing havoc in my life since childhood in Jesus name. I purify my body and life with the blood of Jesus, the blood that speaks better things than the blood of Abel in Jesus name.
  • To sum it up:

Breaking generational curses is easy once you know the curses in your bloodline and how to break them. Some people, mostly some family members, will disagree with you about generational curses. And setting foundations for new changes in your life.

Children Of The Righteous Are Sanctified

What does the Bible say about breaking generational curses ...

Some teachings say that you can bring your whole family into bondage or those so called generational curses by your own mistake. The following scriptures show us that the children of the righteous are sanctified.

    • 1 Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean but now are they Holy.
    • Acts 16:30-31 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
    • Luke 17:26-29 And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. 27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
    • Psalms 103:17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto childrens children.

    Break The Generational Curse Line

When you complete the above step, youll be ready to break the curse line. Through curse lines, the devil and his demons gain access, function, and feed on. Now, you need to be saved first before going through these steps. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sins, and through it, we trample over the enemy.

When breaking generational cycles, you need to use the weapons of warfare found in Ephesians 6:11-18.

Every believer has the spiritual authority to fight against the enemy and to trade on his powers. When breaking generational curses, you should stand firm in authority. And command every part of the curse in your family to be severed, removed, and broken in Jesus name.

Now you may be wondering: what verses can I stand on? Which prayers can I pray to break these curses?

How Generational Curses Affect My Love Life

Do you ever wonder what someone would think if they saw the items in your purse? If you looked in my purse right now, you would find a flower vase, hand-sanitizer, a hair-bow, a protective face mask, an old glow stick, a pen, a tape measure, lotion, Zyrtec, a marker, a flashlight, and a microfiber cleaning cloth.

While random, each of these items is there for a reason: The mask, hand-sanitizer, and Zyrtec are in there to keep me safe, the flower vase is a gift and the tape measurer is for a project I am working on. The items in my purse are not directly related to my love life or yours. However, taking a look at our lives and what we carry around , reveals a lot about who we are and the impact this baggage can have on our relationships.
