What Does The Bible Say About Hair

Hairs Struggling Theres A Scripture For That

Long hair on a guy?! What does the Bible say?

Wanting hair to grow and be lustrous is not being vain. If youre experiencing some unexplainedhair loss, I hope these scriptures will encourage you. I got them from a woman at my church who was experiencing hair loss about a year ago. She used these prayers coupled with anointing;oil . Her hair is not a little past shoulder length.

In Judges 16:17, 19-20 we see the connection between the strength of Samson and his hair. I Corinthians 11:15 states that if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. For clarification, lets compare other versions of the same verse:

And isnt long hair a womans pride and joy? For it has been given to her as a covering.

But if a woman has long hair, it is her ornament and glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.

Notice the different versions and how they all state that the hair of a woman is either a glory or pride and joy or ornament. ;Either way, the Word is clear long hair is our entitlement as women and it is Gods gift to us.; Gods Word is health to our flesh .; For as long as we are willing to rely on Gods Word, He is willing to meet us at the point of our needs.

Its it wonderful that theres; Word for something that would ordinarily seem so inconsequential as hair? You can turn these scriptures into prayers, along with taking proper care of your hair and watch your hair begin to grow.

Luke 21:18:;But not a hair on your head will be lost.

Does The Bible Prohibit Women From Cutting Their Hair

We read in I Corinthians 11:15 that “if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given to her for a covering.” Something that is a glory should be given special care and attention. Hair should be groomed and worn in a tasteful and attractive manner. If left on its own, it would soon become quite unattractive.

At the same time, one ought to keep proper modesty in mind. Some have gone to extremes out of vanity, which, of course, is certainly not God’s will. In I Timothy 2:9-10, we find these instructions: “In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works” . The “braided hair or gold or pearls” Paul mentions refers to a popular hairstyle of the day in which women piled their hair in an lavish set of braids interwoven with expensive jewelry, an attempt to proclaim their wealth and high station and incite envy.

Because Paul mentions long hair, some have been afraid to cut or style their hair at all. Notice, however, that I Corinthians 11:15 does not read “uncut hair”; it reads “long hair.” The Bible nowhere prohibits tasteful cutting, curling, styling, or setting of a woman’s hair. Any length is appropriate if the hair is long enough to be a covering and feminine. Any style is proper as long as it is modest and looks feminine.

How Long Is Long Hair In The Bible

One last concern is Deut. 22:5. This scripture encourages gender distinction regarding our physical appearances. It is unclear what the reasons were for God giving this command, possibly to differentiate Israel from the pagan nations. There may have been other reasons. Essentially men must look like men and women must look like women. Some churches take a hard line interpretation of this scripture and prohibit women from wearing pants.

Exactly at what point pants became mens clothing, I dont know. In Biblical times men wore what looked like skirts. They did not wear Levis. The major apparent distinction, I think, between men and women was facial hair. This is why Davids soldiers were so ashamed when the enemy shaved half their faces .

It is also reported that women in China wore pants long before it became the customary attire for men in the western world. So there is no rule which makes pants mens clothing and not womens. In any case modern society doesnt recognize any such rule. Tying this scripture into our previous discussion, even if a man is to have long hair, he must avoid looking like a woman.

However this is not really a problem since the hairstyles that men with long hair wear are different from those which women do. And similarly it is no longer a shame for women to have short hair, as long as they dont look like men. Again this is hardly ever the case.

How Have Depictions Of Jesus Changed Over The Centuries

Some of the earliest known artistic representations of Jesus date to the mid-third century A.D., more than two centuries after his death. These are the paintings in the ancient catacombs of St. Domitilla in Rome, first discovered some 400 years ago. Reflecting one of the most common images of Jesus at the time, the paintings depict Jesus as the Good Shepherd, a young, short-haired, beardless man with a lamb around his shoulders.

Another rare early portrait of Jesus was discovered in 2018 on the walls of a ruined church in southern Israel. Painted in the sixth century A.D., it is the earliest known image of Christ found in Israel, and portrays him with shorter, curly hair, a depiction that was common to the eastern region of the Byzantine empireespecially in Egypt and the Syria-Palestine regionbut disappeared from later Byzantine art.

A Woman With Short Hair Is Dishonouring Male Headship

What does the bible say about cutting hair ...

Every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven . In other words, to have a shaven head would dishonour her head, just as her appearing in public worship without a headcovering would do. And the next verse equates a shorn head with a shaven head. Shortened hair is the same as a bald head, for such a woman;would look;like a man. That would bring;dishonour upon her head, meaning not the head of her body, but her husband, the head of her family. Male headship is a theme running right through this passage in 1 Corinthians 11. Short hair on a wife, making her look like her husband, is not giving honour to the principle of the male headship of the home.

Paul says in verse 7 that the woman is the glory of the man. In other words, she is meant to bring honour to the man. She is to honour him as the head of the home and to acknowledge his God-ordained authority. The visible distinction of her long hair and his short hair signifies this honourable role distinction, but that symbol is obliterated in dishonour if she has short hair, making herself to appear the same as him, as if she were trying to assume his role in the family. This demonstrates how short hair in women undermines the creation order and ordinances in yet another way. It is no coincidence that in western society the introduction of short hair on women has coincided with women casting off their submissive role in marriage.

Women Should Have Long Hair And Men Should Have Short Hair

Pauls;words are clear to everyone who is willing to receive them: Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering . As far as hair is concerned, the;distinction between a man and a woman;is;to be shown in the different lengths of their hair. If a mans hair is long, that is a shame and therefore wrong. But if a womans hair is long, that is a glory;and therefore right. So, the teaching of the passage is clear enough: men and boys should have short hair; women and girls should have long hair. As an article in the November 1927 Free Presbyterian Magazine rightly said: This one passage should suffice for all who wish to please God .

Often those who make a stand on the issue of hair are accused of being;Pharasaic and legalistic.;But what is legalism? It;is when man-made laws are imposed on the people of God without the warrant of Scripture. That is one of the things the Pharisees did, for which the Saviour condemned them: Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition . But long hair on women and short hair on men, this is the commandment of God, not the tradition of men! It comes from the Word of God.

Long Hair Is A Womans Covering

If a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering . The passage speaks a lot about the womans head covering. When writing about head coverings in public worship, he had used;the various Greek words related to kalumma . But now that he is dealing with the womans hair as a covering, Paul introduces a different Greek word, the word;peribolaion. This shows that he is dealing with two kinds of covering in the passage: head coverings to be put on during public worship; and the covering of hair.

The word;peribolaion signifies literally to throw all around like a mantle or veil. It therefore refers to something copious that wraps about a person. This gives the indication that a womans long hair must be of some copious;length.;People will want to ask, sometimes implicitly disputing with the words of inspiration, the sufficiency of Scripture and the wisdom of God, How long is long then?. But there is an evident difference between long and short. They are relative. Medium is another relative term in measuring length. These things are clear enough for those that categorise hairstyles according to length for women in glossy magazines, and surely they are clear enough for those who wish to follow the Word of God.

Womens And Mens Hair Are To Be Distinct In Length

Long Hair On Men: What the Bible Really Says

It is not mere hair style that is to distinguish male and female hair. Scripturally, the focus is on the hair length. Language relating to length of hair is;used;in the passage over and over again: as if she were shaven ; let her also be shorn; . . . for a woman to be shorn or shaven ; if a man have long hair ; if a woman have long hair .

In Revelation 9:7-8, the locusts hair had to be something that was immediately distinctive as womens hair, and that could only be its length.

So Scripture requires more than a;distinctively feminine;hairstyle. It is not enough that a woman has her hair in a style that a man would not have. Biblically, it is;the length of her hair that must chiefly distinguish her hair from a mans.

What Does The Bible Say About Dyeing Hair

1 Corinthians 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering, Luke 7:38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment,

Womens And Mens Hair Are To Be Distinct

The Bible insists on a distinction between male and female, involving not only their distinct characters and roles but also their outward appearance. This visible distinction;includes their different;clothing, and this passage extends it;to differences in hair. Men and women are not to have the same hair. The passage shows;that if a man have long hair , that is one thing. But if a woman have long hair , that is an entirely different matter. Therefore hair does matter! A womans hair is given to her, not to a man, for a covering .

That there is to be a distinction between male and female hair is confirmed by an assumption in another passage of Gods Word.;Revelation 9:7-8 states in;its description of the locusts that their faces were as the faces of men but;they had hair as the hair of women. Clearly, as far as Scripture is concerned, mens and womens hair are to be visibly different, just as their faces are.

Every Church Must Implement This Distinction

Lastly, since Scripture is clear, the church must be clear and uniform in its practice. If any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God . Those who would depart from the clear teaching of the apostle and seek to undermine it are being contentious. They are dividing their fellow believers from the requirements of Gods Word and from other believers. Paul gives ordinances by the authority of God but they would rather have their own custom. They are seeking to;replace the commandment of God with mans custom or cultural norm. They would try to say that the apostle is simply reflecting the cultural norms and attitudes of his day and that these do not apply now. They think that they;are free to substitute one set of human norms for another. It is, however, a dangerous act of rebellion against Gods Word and against nature itself.

In better days the visible church gave no unclear sound on this matter, demonstrating that up until recently there was no other custom in the churches of God.

In the seventeenth century, John Trapp wrote on verses 14 and 15:

Methinks our monstrous fashionists, both male and female, the one for nourishing their horrid bushes of vanity, the other for their most unnatural and cursed cutting their hair, should every hour fear and tremble. . . . It is a vile thing to go against nature.

In the eighteenth century, John Gill wrote in his commentary on verse 6:

Correct Meaning Of Nature

What Does the Bible Say About Long Hair?

In order to understand the meaning of nature, we need to look at the flow of thought in 1 Corinthians 11. Paul was conducting a discourse on women and head coverings. Note that many believers still believe it is a shame for a man to have long hair despite the fact that women in their church do not cover their heads. I also do not believe the head covering command applies today, but at least I am consistent in my belief system.

Paul was explaining why women in the church, in his day, should cover their heads when they prayed or prophesied. Note that a physical head covering was intended here. Some people select one verse , discard the rest and conclude that the head covering is actually the womans hair. This is based on a misunderstanding of the structure of the chapter and a reluctance to give the Bible any serious study. If the head covering referred to a womans hair, then verses 5 and 6 make very little sense. This is how those verses would read:

Every woman who prays or prophesies while bald headed dishonors her head because it is just as if she were bald. If a woman is bald, let her be bald.

And why must the covering only be on specifically when she prayed or prophesied? Could she be bald one minute, suddenly have long hair when she prays, then bald again when she says amen? These verses only make sense if a physical head covering is intended.
