A week or so ago I put together a massive post with well over a hundred bible verses about money and talked about how we need to make sure that we always put God first in our lives before money and everything else.

We can easily allow money to become our master, and God can quickly move to the background if were not careful.

One thing that occurred to me in the midst of listing all those verses, however, is that I never really touched on a topic that seems to be especially important right now in the midst of a double dip recession when so many people are having a hard time.; The idea of looking to God for strength in the midst of hard times.

Our problems will not go away. Fear will still stalk us. Worry will still show up unannounced like an unwanted house guest. But so does God. As we acknowledge His presence, His promises, and His Word, He trades our troubled hearts for peace.

The sun pours in the window, sending rays of light all over the room. Slowly I open my eyes, filled with peace as I stretch. Suddenly the events of the night before flood my mind. My heart is in overdrive as I think about my husband being rushed away in an ambulance.

The night of terror fills my mind as I helplessly watch the emergency teamwork on my husband. His heart condition brought him to the point of death and back.

I jump out of bed shaking as I rush to the hospital. Yet, on the way, John 14:1 comes to mind and I sense God whisper to my spirit, Let not your heart be troubled.

Have you been here? An unexpected crisis. Or maybe you knew it was coming after a long battle with illness, losing your job, or discovering your spouse kept a deep, dark secret from you. You wonder where God is. You question the how and the why and fear swamps your mind and body.

The common overarching assumption in a life of following Jesus is that we will be cocooned from bad things happening. But Jesus did not say we wouldnt have trouble.

Before He gave these words of comfort, He told His disciples in 14:1, Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.

This is a wonderful promise and a life-giving command. Jesus has troubled the disciples by explaining about his impending death. He has also comforted them by promising the Holy Spirit who will teach you all things and remind of everything I have said to you . He has promised that though he is leaving them, he will not leave them as orphans, but will come to them .

The world has a way of giving peace, but that is not Jesus way. If we understand that Jesus is the way to the Father, we love him, and obey his teaching, we will have perfect peace. The Holy Spirit will dwell with us and in us, and we will not be alone.

If we obey and follow God in Christ by the Holy Spirit, we can actually have some power over our feelings. Most people are enslaved to their emotions and their heart. Jesus believes that we can not let our hearts be troubled. And he believes that we can choose to not be afraid.

In my opinion, based on the facts available on the verses before and after John 14:1, it is okay to be afraid sometimes even as Christians. Before you switch off, please keep reading!;

Whether we are conscious of it or not, negative information creates fear and anxiety. Unfortunately,; we live in a world where good news is no news!;

If you tune in to CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera or even your local news channel, negative information will be thrown at you constantly. As Christians there are a number of ways to handle this. One way is to turn off the channels completely. In my opinion, this may be extreme as you will lose out on the good information. As believers we are not of this world but we need information to be able to complete while we are still here.;

So, what is the best way to respond? Balance the information you consume? You may be wondering how all these relate to Let not your heart be troubled. I will connect the dots soon.;

Moving on, the information we consume forms our thoughts and can either create fear or encouragement. My recommendation? As a Christian, do not stay glued to these news channels all day. I’ve received several emails regarding coping with fear during these troubled times. Writers recount that as followers of Christ, they know they’re supposed to be strong and courageous, but they’re anxious and depressed. They’ve prayed for peace and read Scripture verses about courage but still find themselves almost overwhelmed with fear at times.

One writer anguished, “I am troubled that I feel so scared. Why do I suddenly feel so afraid? I realize how attached I am to the comforts of this world and ‘my plans.’ I feel unsettled and have lost a lot of this week to feeling anxious. I know that’s not God’s will for any of us. Do you have any wisdom to pass on to me to help me remain focused on the purpose that God has for my life?”

My Answer

Some fear is normal. Let’s be honest, these are perilous times. Very few of us have experienced anything like the past six months. It’s only human nature that we feel some anxiety since we face such an uncertain future. Fear of the unknown is to be expected, even among those who have faith in Christ.

And some fear is good. Fear of a spanking keeps a toddler from wandering out into the street. Fear of falling keeps an old man like me off ladders. Fear of a speeding ticket motivates us to drive more safely. Fear of contracting a virus leads us to wash our hands more frequently. Solomon said, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” .
