Facts About Sex Before Marriage You Should Know

What Does the Bible Have to Say about Sex Before Marriage? | Jonathan “JP” Pokluda

A lot of individuals have trouble deciding whether to or whether not to have sex before marriage. But, whatever your decision is, thats totally up to you. Just like Ive stated before, this is not to make a choice for you but to present the truth and facts about sex before marriage.

Wikipedia, in a publication on premarital sex, wrote that:

According to a 2001 UNICEF survey, in 10 out of 12 developed nations with available data, more than two-thirds of young people have had sexual intercourse while still in their teens.

In Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the proportion is over 80%.

In Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, approximately 25% of 15-year-olds and 50% of 17-year-olds have sex.

In a 2005 Kaiser Family Foundation study of US teenagers, 29% of teens reported feeling pressure to have sex, 33% of sexually active teens reported being in a relationship where they felt things were moving too fast sexually, and 24% had done something sexual they didnt really want to do.

Several polls have indicated peer pressure as a factor in encouraging both girls and boys to have sex.

1. Premarital sex tends to break up couples.

2. Many men and women do not want to marry a person who has had intercourse with someone else.

3. Those who have premarital sex tend to have less happy marriages.

4. Those who have premarital sex are more likely to have their marriage end in divorce.

What Does The Bible Say About Premarital Kissing And Sex

Hardcore devotees of Christianity acted cold feet towards sexual acts before marriage. But there are many other ways of showing love affection, and the question is occurring here that will kiss be considered a sinful act without being married? Questions are many, but answers are few. There is no clear answer to this question because God has questioned us in the Bible that it depends on the true emotion one is holding by that time. This leads to confusion to many, as Christ himself gave kisses to several Christ adherents.

Now, one question is still going around in the mind of teenagers, is kissing considered sinful and what the Bible says about premarital kissing.

The answer is simple, and we need to take a close look at the Bibles note. You have to know if kissing is done with lustful intentions and what sexual desire it is leading to. If it is yes, then it is sinful. According to the Bible, such lustful kissing will be marked as Sinful. But this doesnt mean that every romantic couple is considered a sinner. Every affectionate touch is pure, and it should happen with the consent of each other. The Bible guides us with the fact that humans should have a clear and genuine affection filled heart by the time of kissing. Otherwise, this debatable question has no permanent solution.

Be Part Of A Church That Will Help You Fight Fornication

Especially in a sexually permissive culture, you need a church that engages sex biblically. While sex is good , sexual sin makes us lawbreakers in need of redemption the church cannot waffle on this. But faithful churches will also provide hope for all sinners. Pauls Corinthian audience was exhausted by sexual sin and weighted down by guilt. He preached Christ as the only one who could cure restless desires . We should not expect to see fornicators, adulterers, and homosexuals converted to Christ if we do not meet them with the grace of the gospel.

More concretely, believers must open their homes to single people, providing a haven of companionship and a respite from long hours alone in which temptation can gain strength. We should prepare to respond with prayerful and sympathetic love to those courageous enough to confess sexual sin. In this way we help bear their burden . Caring friends will also offer to singles the platonic physical affection practiced by Jesus and his disciples . One single friend put it this way: If appropriate intimacy doesnt come from somewhere else like God or friends, it is pretty much a given that singles will be either emotionally suffering or falling into sin. We can learn from many non-western cultures the sacramental art of appropriate physical contact.

Sex Before Marriage Is Not A Sin

No sex before marriage-When asked what the Bible has to say about sex, most people will have this response. However, when asked to provide exactly where this rule is listed in the Bible, the answer from many Christians is much less confident. My belief that premarital sex is sinful has been shattered.

So what is the truth about having sex outside of marriage?

The truth is that we are having the wrong conversation over and over again. In an attempt to justify what is believed to be common knowledge, we are pulling at any verse that has an inkling of resemblance to premarital sex. We are using these verses, devoid of their context and circumstance, in order to justify a belief that does not have much merit.

Many source the Ten Commandments as a call to wait until we are married to have sex. In particular, the seventh of these commandments.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

The problem here is that adultery and premarital sex are being equated, when in reality, they are two distinctly different things.

Adultery really is about violation of relationship or violation of contract. Its about not keeping your promise, Dr. Colleen Windham-Hughes, a professor of religion at California Lutheran University, said.

This verse can be interpreted to mean that God is in control of our bodies. While it is undeniable that glorifying God through celibacy or through your body is a way to honor God, this verse is also getting at the submissive role of women at this time in the world.

Thoughts On Does The Bible Prohibit Sex Before Marriage

I think for this blog to make any sense we need to be clear that we are defining marriage as the registration of the relationship with the statea modern phenomenon.

In ancient Israel marriage was a matter between the families involvedno priest, elder, or temple involvement. This is not my area of expertise, but it seems that this concept carried through to the early church until the Middle Agesit was not finally brought into church until the Council of Trent as I understand it. Subsequently, many countries brought it into the statebut not until 19th century in the UK.

As regards, In biblical times, a man was not prohibited from having sexual relations with a woman, as long as it led to marriage I am not convinced by this. The mohar was dependent on virginity on a first marriageand was a big deal, as Deuteronomy 22 indicates. It was the fathers responsibility to ensure her virginity until marriagewithout that her subsequent marital prospects were considerably diminished.

  • Maybe that explains why adultery is seen as the major category rather than one sexual sin among many.

  • Colin Hamer

    Hi Paul,

You say in the link that marriage is a Legal/Social bond = The public ceremony that was officiated by community elders/certified licensed officials.

Where in the Bible does it say that?

  • Steven Robinson
  • John 4.3942 rather strongly suggests reconciliation doesnt it?

  • 50-60 years is of course common but depends on lifespans, so we could say lifelong.

    Husbands Owe It To Wives

Many historians think that the most surprising thing the Bible says about sex is found in 1 Corinthians 7:3-4:

the husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

One scholar, for example, puts it this way:

The marked mutuality of Pauls comments was, however, revolutionary in the ancient world where patriarchy was the norm. For the husband to have authority over his wifes body was nothing special. Pauls following statement affirming the reverse, that the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does, clearly pointed to a radical and unprecedented restriction on the husbands sexual freedom. It communicates, negatively, his obligation to refrain from engaging in sexual relations with anyone other than his wife and, positively, his obligation to fulfill his marital duty to provide her with sexual pleasure and satisfaction.

The idea that sex was to be mutual and that the husband owed it to his wife and that the wife had a right to claim it from the husband was revolutionary! It was unprecedented! No one had ever said anything like this, anywhere else in the ancient world.

    Dr Bill Arnold Responds:

For the Old Testament side of things, its interesting that the only text your student interlocutor mentions is the Book of the Covenant stipulation that a man who seduces a virgin should pay her bride-price and make her his wife . What the student fails to observe is that the premise of this legal stipulation is that the man has, in fact, gotten the process reversed. He should have negotiated the bride-price, then married her, then had intercourse. The point of the law, as with many other laws in the Book of the Covenant, is that he has willfully done something wrong and must now make amends. The text the student is citing in your discussion actually supports your position, and not his.

Also, although perhaps not directly related to the question of premarital sex, the single most neglected datum from the OT related to marriage is Gen. 2:24-25. I never thought in my wildest dreams that this text would become controversial in our day, but it elevates the idea of heterogeneous marriage between one male and one female, regardless of how we conceptualize a state-defined and sanctioned certificate of marriage. The biblical concept is clear enough.

How Will I Know Were Compatible Without Sex Before Marriage

Some people wonder, how they will know if they are compatible with a person unless they have sex first? In the Bible, Paul says that marriage is a commitment between two people that is supposed to reflect the relationship between Jesus and his church .

Jesus didnt take us for a test drive to see if we were worthy of his love first. He fully committed himself to us before He asked us to give our lives up to follow him.

God designed us to see marriage with a commitment mentality, not a consumer mentality.

Being compatible is a good thing and it can be helpful to go to premarital counseling to see if you have similar views on family and finances.

But if you decide to get married, it honors God to enter into that marriage with a commitment to love and honor that person no matter what. Then, in the safety of that commitment, you will find amazing sexual compatibility.

Ephesians 5:25-33 commands, Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh.

Maybe, as youve been reading this, your guilt is setting in. Have you already gone too far, made a bad choice, or has someone sinned against you?

Is It Wrong To Have Sexual Urges In The First Place

Where is Sex Before Marriage CLEARLY a sin in the Bible?

Maybe youre thinking, Im too young to get married, but I still have sexual urges! Friend, youre not alone. Many unmarried adults feel the same. They arent ready for marriage or havent met someone they want to marry yet, but they STILL get sexual urges. . Having sex outside of marriage is wrong. If abstinence is what God asks of unmarried people, then what can an unmarried person do with those feelings?

Just as being attracted to another person is not a sin, simply having sexual urges is not a sin. Can we repeat that? Having legitimate sexual desire is NOT A SIN. If you ever feel shame or self-hate for your sexuality or sexual desire, please please please look at 1 Corinthians 7:9 as a source of peace rather than condemnation.

Paul addresses the unmarried and widows with this: But if cannot exercise self-control, should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion . Hes not saying that if you cant exercise self-control, you should just stay single until the desire goes away. No, hes saying that your sexual desire and sexuality is a normal part of being human and may be sanctified through a committed marriage to a loving spouse.

    Yeah, butIm still single.

We hear you. Maybe youd love to get married if you could find the right person or if your right person would say yes. Are you doomed to a life of abstinence?

Married Couples Should Have It Often

Bible says sex every 3 days. What Does the Bible Say About Sex How ...

Queen Victoria famously instructed the Christian ladies in her realm to Lie back and think of the Empire a view of sex that seems pessimistic and pragmatic in the extreme. Thankfully the Bible presents a very different view. In addition to the goodness, generosity, and reciprocity mentioned above, the Scriptures also recommend a level of frequency that many modern Bible readers find quite surprising.

The Apostle Paul told his people:

Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

At most, married couples could set aside a few days for dedicated prayer and spiritual observance only if both parties were in agreement but then they must come together quickly lest they be tempted to sexual immorality.

As in the Old Testament, so in the New, frequent marital intercourse is prescribed as a guard against a wandering eye and a lustful heart. The assumption is that if we drink deeply from our own cisterns we will be less tempted to draw from our neighbours well. There is great wisdom and great joy in following this inspired instruction.
