What Does The Bible Say About Sex In Marriage

Things The Bible Says About Sex

Does the Bible Say Sex Outside of Marriage Is Okay?
Sex is a gift from God.

When it comes to sexual pleasure in the Bible, it is often spoken of in the context of marriage. There are some Christians that feel that the only reason for sex is reproduction and there are others that believe that there are higher reasons for sex, including the ultimate joining together of a married man and woman joining their two spirits, joining their two minds, and joining their two bodies. The Bible is not explicit on sex practices between married people. In Hebrews 13:4 we are told that the marriage bed is to be undefiled, it does not say what it means. There are a number of practices of love and sexuality in which the Bible is silent. Because of this, it is difficult to determine what is right and this is wrong. The general rule here is if its not from faith, it is sin. In the Old Testament, the term for sexual intercourse was to know a husband or a wife. The most intimate knowledge of a partner comes through this joining. Rather than prohibit sexual pleasure, the Bible shows that it is a gift from God. Here are six things the Bible says about sex.

What Does The Bible Say About Sex Outside Of Marriage

What does the Bible say about sex outside of marriage? Since the law is written on the heart , even unbelievers know something of the purpose and boundaries of sex, though they suppress this knowledge . The pivotal factor is whether one submissively accepts the answer. Even still, skeptics of the Christian faith and those attempting to rationalize sin will often point out that the Bible doesnt explicitly condemn nonmarital sex. Though we arent to answer a fool according to this folly , Christians are to be unabashedly clear about what the Bible clearly teaches about sex.

Not without reason has Satan worked tirelessly to pervert sex. Because sex is sacred, its profaning is catastrophic. Generally, sex has been despised and abused in two primary ways: through licentious pandemonium or by a gnostical regarding of sex as taboo. For the former, the sundry prohibitions against sexual immorality are ignored. For the latter, the book of Genesis is ignored, and the Song of Songs is just downright embarrassing. Both perspectives betray a fundamental misconception and disorder of Gods design. And grasping Gods original design for sex is a sine qua non for answering the present question.

For the Christian, sex outside of marriage isnt an option. Yet where it has regrettably transpired, a contrite heart God does not despise , for we have an advocate with the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, the propitiation for our sins . Trust Him, and sin no more .

Sex Outside Of Marriage Is Considered A Sin

You likely already knew that “You shall not commit adultery,” is one of the Ten Commandments. But the Bible has many, many more verses about adultery.

Hebrews 13:4 reads “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” Within a marriage, partners are meant to be faithful to God and each other.

“The sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 also notes that to commit adultery is to sin not only against God, but against oneself. “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body,” reads this verse. “The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.” If a person physically cheats on their spouse, they aren’t only dishonoring their marriage, they’re dishonoring God.

Claim : Jesus Didnt Speak About Same

This is an argument from silence, but the silence doesnt take place in a vacuum. Jesus addresses and defines marriage in Matthew 19:46 and Mark 10:69 using both Genesis 1:2627 and Genesis 2:24 to parse it out. Here Jesus defines and affirms marriage as between a man and a woman, a reflection of the fact that God made us male and female to care for creation together. With this definition, same-sex marriage is excluded. Had Jesus wished to extend the right of marriage beyond this definition, here was his opportunity. But he didnt take it.

Jesus never discussed same-sex marriage because the way he defined marriage already excluded it. He was not as silent on the topic as some claim.

The Passion & Purity Of Holy Love

" What Does The Bible Say About Sex Before Marriage?"

Sex. A word that carries many different connotations in our culture today. You could easily point to the 1960s counter-culture and sexual revolution as a starting point for Americas sexual journey of the past 50 years. The sexual revolution has been ever-expanding its influence and changing terms and definitions ever since. But did sex need a revolution?

What does the Bible say about sex? Lets look at some Bible verses about sex.

Our culture has run contrary to Gods design for sex. The pornographic industry is one of the largest entertainment industries out there. Mainstream movies and tv shows constantly feature risqué material in a way that desensitizes all of us to biblical norms. Virtually every entertainment and health magazine on the newsstand displays a half-naked woman or man selling, market, and promoting promiscuity and sexuality. The purity, beauty, and intimacy of what sex should be, has been vastly degraded. Now sex has turned into a dirty image. It has become a topic that is no longer discussed with taste and reservation but with lust and profanity. Bible verses about sex have much to say about this topic.

May these Bible verses about sex open your eyes to not being ashamed of the word but becoming empowered in yourself to love and be loved in such a special way with your spouse. May God bless you Abundantly.

Sex Is To Be Done In A Way That There Is No Shame

Proverbs 5:18-23 calls to question a mans lust of another mans wife: Why, my son, bed intoxicated with another mans wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman? For your ways are in full view of the LORD, and He examines all your paths. The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them the cords of their sins hold them fast. For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly . Many people experience shame in regard to sex. The Bible reminds us that sex should be done in such a way that there is no shame. However, sometimes shame is a gift from God in response to our sexual sin and sometimes it is the devastating feeling we bear because we have been sexually sinned against. Other times, we have not sinned or been sinned against but feel shame because we have wrong thinking and feelings about sex in general, or a sex act in particular.

Five Biblical Guidelines For Refraining

There are times however when refraining is preferred temporarily. This biblical text provides us with clear guidelines.

  • Mutual consent. According to this verse, both the husband and the wife should agree to not have sex. Do not deprive one another except with consent The decision as to whether or not to have sex is not unilateral. Both the husband and wife should agree together.
  • A specific period of time, predetermined and prearranged. The verse continues, except with consent for a time, Neither the husband or the wife should believe that restraining is indefinite. Common examples could include a couple agreeing on not having sex while the wife is on her menstrual period, while visiting a relatives house for a couple of days, or while sick. The preferred way to treat this time would be to provide the next time to expect to have sex again. As soon as I stop bleeding,When we get home from this trip, thenAs soon as I feel better, lets

God Designed Foreplay And Sex To Be Frequent

Some teach that sexual activity should only occur for the purpose of having babies. But this is contrary to the teaching of the Old and New Testaments.

In the Old Testament, the Song of Solomon describes the love relationship of a couple from courtship to the wedding night and then into married life. In the first three chapters, we are told that the groom is King Solomon and the bride is a Shulammite woman. At the end of chapter three, the wedding ceremony is briefly mentioned. Then the wedding night is described in the fourth chapter. A careful reading reveals that the entire chapter of sixteen verses describes how the couple made love on that wedding night. The description is extremely sensuous and symbolically very descriptive of foreplay and intercourse, culminating in orgasms for both spouses. The fourth chapter of Song of Solomon is completely devoted to how to make love and also describes their emotional responses.

The remaining chapters of the book describe two more sexual encounters culminating in orgasms. This reveals two very important principles. First, God approves of sexual intercourse between and a husband and wife, that is, between a married biological male and biological female. Second, He encourages husbands and wives to engage in sexual activity. Third, God designed sexual activity to be extremely enjoyable.

In the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 teaches that God has intended sexual activity to be regular and enjoyable.

Sex Is A Reflection Of The Loving Goodness Of God

What Does the Bible Have to Say about Sex Before Marriage? | Jonathan “JP” Pokluda

God created sex. God made our bodies very good with male and female parts and pleasures. When our first parents consummated their covenant, God was not shocked or horrified, because He created our bodies for sex. The reason that sex is fun, wonderful and pleasurable is because it is the reflection of the loving goodness of God who created it as gift for us to steward and to enjoy: That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame .

    Sex Forbidden By The Bible

The seventh commandment forbids adultery. It’s in the Bible, Exodus 20:14, “You shall not commit adultery.”

Sexual sin is destructive, even when the effects are not immediately apparent. It’s in the Bible, I Corinthians 6:18, TLB. “That is why I say to run from sex sin. No other sin affects the body as this one does. When you sin this sin it is against your own body.”

How does sexual sin begin? It’s in the Bible, Matthew 5:28, TLB. “But I say: Anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

The Bible condemns homosexual behavior. It’s in the Bible, Romans 1:26-27, NIV. “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”

The Bible forbids incest. It’s in the Bible, Leviticus 18:6, NIV. “No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations.”

The Bible forbids bestiality. It’s in the Bible, Leviticus 18:23, NIV. “Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it.”

God Created Sexual Activity For Marriage

In the first chapter of the Bible, we are told that God created the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. They were created on the sixth day . Genesis 1 describes when they were created and Genesis 2 describes how they were created.

Since Adam was alone, God created the woman from the man. Genesis 2:18 states that the woman would be suitable for him. The Hebrew word for suitable has the sense of someone who would correspond to him. She would fit with or complement him as pieces of a jigsaw puzzle fit one another. Together they complete a picture. For more information, the study Gods Purpose For Marriage is recommended.

The following passage tells us how God created the woman. The passage says God caused Adam to go to sleep. We could say that God gave him divine anesthesia.

So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

The man said,This is now bone of my bones,And flesh of my flesh She shall be called Woman,Because she was taken out of Man.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:21-24

Why Bother Discussing Something So Rare

So if this is the case, why should we even talk about sexual abstinence in marriage? If Paul is so clear on how rare it should be, why bother discussing it?

Most of us dont. When we look at these verses isolated from the meaning of sex and a theology of the body, the apostle seems to be saying to Christian couples: More sex! More sex! More sex! But this is not the only thing he says. The sexual abstinence part comes into play, not so much by Pauls exception in verse 5, but by what he means in verse 4, when he explains who has authority over our bodies in marriage. Well see this more vividly when contrasted with the main misuses of the text, but first the two misuses.

Why Is Sexual Purity So Important To God

What does the Bible really have to say about same

A loving marriage reflects the relationship between Christ and the church. God hates sexual impurity because it is a distorted, deflated imitation of the real thing. Its like trading in a priceless diamond for a tawdry dime-store fake. Satan has taken the precious gift of sexual intimacy and converted it into a shabby substitution: a no-strings-tied quick physical release. No commitment, no meaning.

Sex used as fleeting pleasure between unmarried, uncommitted people contaminates the whole point of sex to bond a married couple together. Unmarried couples may think its all casual, but the reality is that any sexual encounter creates lasting psychological and chemical bonds between the two. When people who have created these bonds through immorality later marry other people, they are haunted by their previous sexual flings. This interferes with trust and sexual pleasure in the marriage. The attachments formed through sexual immorality complicate married sex.

Should a man take his body, which is part of Christ, and join it to a prostitute? Never! And dont you realize that if a man joins himself to a prostitute, he becomes one body with her? For the Scriptures say, The two are united into one.

In this case, you need to repent of your past sexual encounters, confess them to God, and ask Him to forgive you and release you from any emotional, sexual, or spiritual bonds to past lovers that might interfere with your marital relationship.

    The Pinnacle Of Creation

Then look at the next verses:

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man He made into a woman and brought her to the man. The man said, This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

What I want you to see in this passage is that when God fashioned the woman to be a complement to the man, He was not yet done with the crescendo of His creation. Its not until He brings the man and the woman back together again and the two become one flesh that we arrive at the summit. In that act of marriage and sexuality we see the pinnacle of creation.

I think theres something central and profound in the sexual act, as a part of a marriage designed by God. When a husband and wife become one flesh they experience a deep physical, emotional, and even spiritual oneness that binds them together.

But it does more than that. It also points to and reflects the goodness of God.

Society The Church And Same Sex Marriages

is a fundamental social institution that does not exist just for the emotional satisfaction of two individuals but for the greater good of the community which stands under the blessing or curse of God. Societies that put emotional fulfillment before right actions and principles will soon give way to a multitude of addictions and deep corruptions and collapse. God will judge any society that institutes same sex marriages.

What Is A Christian Couple Allowed To Do In Sex

God designed your body for sexual pleasure, and He wants married couples to enjoy a thriving sex life. A couple engaged in sexual intimacy honor each other and God.

The Bible does not address sexual positions, but theres no reason not to explore what brings you the most pleasure. In fact, some positions can be helpful for women who may experience discomfort during sex such as side by side or with the wife above. As a couple, find what works best!

What about oral sex? First, the Bible does not forbid it. Secondly, some passages in the Song of Solomon seem to be euphemisms for oral sex between a husband and his bride.

You are my private garden, my treasure, my bride, a secluded spring, a hidden fountain. Your thighs shelter a paradise of pomegranates with rare spices.

: Awake, north wind! Rise up, south wind! Blow on my garden and spread its fragrance all around. Come into your garden, my love taste its finest fruits.

I would give you spiced wine to drink, my sweet pomegranate wine.

Like the finest apple tree in the orchard is my lover among other young men. I sit in his delightful shade and taste his delicious fruit.

The important thing is to respect and honor your spouses feelings about oral sex. They may not feel comfortable with this sort of foreplay so dont pressure them. But if its something the two of you want to explore and enjoy doing thats okay!
