Why Did Moses Break The Tablets Of The Ten Commandments
According to the foregoing, Moses wished to punish the Israelites severely, when he beheld that they were unworthy of the precious gift he carried. By their rash deed they had broken the covenant between them and their Father in heaven. He therefore broke them at the foot of the mount in front of them.
How Many Commandments Are There In The New Testament
There are 1,050 commands in the New Testament for Christians to obey. Due to repetitions we can classify them under about 800 headings. They cover every phase of mans life in his relationship to God and his fellowmen, now and hereafter.
The Fifth Commandment Is Rooted In Gods Structure Of Creation
God has given authority to various offices within the structure of his created order, and one of those offices is the office of parent. The family was built into the fabric of creation from the beginning with Adam and Eve. They were given the mandate to be fruitful and multiply . This was reiterated after the flood when Noah was also commanded to repopulate the earth. The family structure not only provides for the population of the world but also is for the good of children and society in general. Thus, the fifth commandment is crucial for us to study and understand, because it relates directly to how God has ordained and ordered this world.

Honor Your Father And Your Mother
Bible reference – Exodus 20:12:Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
Explanation: In Ephesians 6:2, the apostle Paul says that this is the first commandment with promise and God will not go back on His promise. Children owe their parents love, obedience, respect, and helpfulness.
Think of the happiness that obedience to this commandment would bring to thousands of homes today! Then every day would be Mothers Day and every day would be Fathers Day. So, “honor your father and mother. Disobedience to parents is one of the ominous signs of the last days, according to 2 Timothy 3:1, 2.
You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me
Bible reference – Exodus 20:3:You shall have no other gods before Me.
Explanation: Do we still need this commandment? We certainly do. Whatever holds the supreme place in a persons life is a god.
The story is told that in a certain museum in China there was an exhibit called “The American God.” And what do you suppose it was? A dollar bill, neatly framed.
It is strange how modern men turn away from the living God, who is revealed in nature and the Bible, and invent imaginary gods to fit their unbelieving hearts.
In his book, God and the Cosmos, Dr. Theodore Graebner tells us that some who set themselves up as teachersmany even as religious teacherssay that God is merely the spirit of the community . One of these modern leaders says, God is myself . Another says that he worships man .
How would you like to pray to “the spirit of the community” or pray to yourself or to mankind in general? These are some of the false gods proclaimed by the wise men of today.
Some worship pleasure others, reason, philosophy, or business. But all these things are as imperfect as humans themselves, and those who trust in them will be left at last without a light in the vacant and dark night, until the words of the first commandment meet them in the judgment: Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.

Helping Children Establish Their Identity
Children need constant encouragement and frequent acknowledgment of their successes and achievements. Above all, they need plenty of love and praise to help them develop a strong personal identity that reflects a positive and hopeful outlook toward life.
Keep in mind that children do not all respond to different types of praise in the same way. Some can better develop a positive outlook when praise focuses on themon their abilities and areas of competencerather than on individual achievements. Praise focused heavily on accomplishments only, such as grades in school, may engender an unhealthy sense of insecurity. Some may perceive that they are acceptable only if they perform exceptionallythat they are loved only when their efforts are perfect. This type of praise may have the opposite effect from what was intended.
Th Commandment Governs Relationships
Jesus reaffirmed, re-established, and basically rewrote the 5th commandment several times, in several ways. He broadened it and deepened it, thus making the fifth commandment important for the Christian disciple. Here are several of Jesus quotes which represent the depths of Jesus commandment to honor your father and mother.First, he said, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34-35 NHEB. The 5th commandment falls under this overarching new commandment from Christ.Secondly, Jesus stated, Allow the little children, and do not forbid them to come to me for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these. Authorities have the charge from God to lead children to Him. One more of the many examples for us includes the time Jesus said, Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God Matthew 5:7-9 NHEB. Christ has called us to a higher level of obedience in his New Covenant.

Sons Have Two Parents
The Fifth Commandment tells children to honor both father and mother. Long life is the blessing associated with such honor, as Paul points out in Ephesians 6:2 and 3,
2 Honor your father and mother , 3 that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
This commandment is the foundation of sonship, the promise of immortality given to the sons of God. But every son has two parents: father and mother. The sons of God are no different. They have a heavenly father and an earthly mother, even as Jesus did.
John wrote in John 1:12,
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.
If we have the right to become the children of God, how do we do this? The simple answer is to have faith in Jesus Christ, which is a prerequisite to receiving the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the seed of the Father, and when we are overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, Christ is begotten in us. Paul says in 1 Cor. 4:15, for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel .
In one sense Paul was their father, but in the greater sense, God was their Father, who had begotten them by the gospel. Further, he tells the Galatian church, I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you . Thus, Paul speaks as if he were pregnant with the Galatian church, laboring to see them come to a full-term birth. It is like this with individual believers as well, who have been impregnated by the Spirit.
Family Relationships Have Been Rocky And Difficult Ever Since Adams Fall
Toddlers scream and throw tantrums, teenagers rebel against the rules their parents have set up, and parents get angry and treat their children unfairly. This is true not just of parent/child relationships but of any authority structure God has set in motion. As sinners, we dont like to do what we are told, and submitting to authority figures in our lives is difficult for our independence-seeking wills.
The best example of this is the story of the prodigal son . In the story of the prodigal son, the wayward son dishonored his father by asking for his inheritance early and running off to squander it. It showed a lack of respect and love for his family, the people who cared for him and fed him when he could not feed or care for himself. Are we not all like the prodigal son in various ways? We take our parents for granted, demanding that they take care of us, give us money, and then leave us alone so we can do what we want with it. We turn around and abandon the very arms that worked for and cared for us. Ultimately, this is a reflection of humanitys rebellion against God, our heavenly Father. In Adam, we all ran away from his loving care and provision and struck out on our own. We squandered our wealth on sin and are now left with nothing.

Why This Commandment Is Important
Honoring your parents is an important part of our daily lives. When we can learn to treat our parents with respect, we learn to treat God with respect. There is a direct correlation between how we treat our parents and how we treat God. When we dont honor our parents we become susceptible to things like bitterness and anger. When we allow other things to become excuses for not honoring our mothers and fathers, we make it easy for other things to come between us and God. Parents arent perfect, so sometimes this commandment is hard, but it is one that we must strive to follow.

Honoring Our Heavenly Father
In a way, the Fifth Commandment connects the two sections, since God reveals Himself as our loving Father. No father deserves honor as much as our Heavenly Father! Yet the Bible shows that humanity, and even those chosen to be Gods people, have often failed in showing that honor and respect to our Creator God.
God pointed out this much-too-common problem in Malachi 1:6: A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am the Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence?
