Helping Children Establish Their Identity
Children need constant encouragement and frequent acknowledgment of their successes and achievements. Above all, they need plenty of love and praise to help them develop a strong personal identity that reflects a positive and hopeful outlook toward life.

Further, he tells the Galatian church, I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you . Thus, Paul speaks as if he were pregnant with the Galatian church, laboring to see them come to a full-term birth. It is like this with individual believers as well, who have been impregnated by the Spirit.

The best example of this is the story of the prodigal son . In the story of the prodigal son, the wayward son dishonored his father by asking for his inheritance early and running off to squander it. It showed a lack of respect and love for his family, the people who cared for him and fed him when he could not feed or care for himself. Are we not all like the prodigal son in various ways? We take our parents for granted, demanding that they take care of us, give us money, and then leave us alone so we can do what we want with it. We turn around and abandon the very arms that worked for and cared for us. Ultimately, this is a reflection of humanitys rebellion against God, our heavenly Father. In Adam, we all ran away from his loving care and provision and struck out on our own. We squandered our wealth on sin and are now left with nothing.

Why This Commandment Is Important
Honoring your parents is an important part of our daily lives. When we can learn to treat our parents with respect, we learn to treat God with respect. There is a direct correlation between how we treat our parents and how we treat God. When we dont honor our parents we become susceptible to things like bitterness and anger. When we allow other things to become excuses for not honoring our mothers and fathers, we make it easy for other things to come between us and God.
