KJV Study Bible – The Best Study Bible

The Holman King James Version study Bible is a visual learners dream. This study Bible is not only full of color but it is full of accurate and detailed study notes. The Holman KJV study Bible has a plethora of notes to include the old testament. This study Bible is not lacking in cross references either.

Best Study Bible: Interpretive Or Application

First, let me say that both interpretive and application study Bibles are wonderful resources, and calling one type the best study Bible probably isnt the most helpful way to think about the subject.

However, if push comes to shove, Ill always recommend an interpretive study Bible.

Why?

Because I believe that the Holy Spirit is primarily responsible for helping us apply Gods word to our lives. He is the one who makes convicts us of sin and righteousness. He is the one who reveals Christ to us. He is the one who comforts us in our afflictions and encourages when were downtrodden.

Additionally, I dont want someone else doing the hard work of wrestling through how to apply various verses. I want to prayerfully grapple with the text, seeking Gods help to pull out the various meanings and applications.

Bottom line: When it comes to choosing the best study Bible, I would recommend one that focuses on interpretation rather than application.

Bible Translations To Avoid

The New World Translation is published by the Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society . The five translators had virtually no Hebrew or Greek training. Because Jehovahs Witnesses believe Jesus is not equal with God, they translated John 1:1 as the Word was agod. John 8:58 translates Jesus as saying, before Abraham came into existence, I have been . In Exodus 3, God gave His name to Moses as I am, but because Jehovahs Witnesses dont believe Jesus is part of the Godhead or eternal, they changed the correct translation.

Although many Christians love The Message, an extremely loose paraphrase by Eugene Peterson, its so loose that it significantly changes the meaning of many verses and can be misleading.

The Passion Translation by Brian Simmons is his attempt to include the love language of God, but he significantly adds to and takes away words and phrases in Bible verses, which alters the meaning of the verses.

    Best KJV Study Bible

These types of study Bibles are primarily designed to help you understand the meaning of the text in each book of the Bible. In other words, they want to help you get to the heart of the authors original intent.

Usually, these Bibles have loads of study notes underneath the text, plus maps, diagrams, cross-references, and dozens of other helpful tools.

Sometimes the study notes are written by a number of biblical scholars, such as with the ESV Study Bible, and other times theyre written primarily by a single individual, like the MacArthur Study Bible .

Personally, I believe the best study Bible will have study notes written by a variety of scholars. This allows you to get a variety of perspectives on a variety of texts. If all the notes are written by a single person, youre only getting their interpretation of all the passages. This can get especially dicey if youre getting into more difficult texts, like in the Book of Revelation.

However, this is just my personal recommendation and I certainly wont judge you if youre a fan of the MacArthur Study Bible or Sproul Study Bible.

Overall, the King James Study Bible from Thomas Nelson is a really nice Study Bible. The print is nice and large and easy to see at about a 9 point font for the Scripture text and a 7 point font for the study notes.

I do like the level of detail that the study notes go into, which unlike some of the other Study Bibles I have reviewed, these do go into a nice depth level. Not too little, yet not too much commentary either. Good balance in my opinion.

The print is in full color and has a very pleasing design and layout to it. A lot of high quality photos and images and good articles. Actually, this Study Bible has one of the best how to use this Study Bible sections that I have seen. It is very detailed and helpful. If you get this Bible, make sure you check that out so you know how to use it to its fullest extent.

Overall, I would say that if you are in the market for a King James Study Bible, then this is one that should be at the top of your list to check out for sure! You can select whichever binding type you prefer from good quality genuine leather all the way to hardcover. Highly recommended Study Bible. I received a copy of this Study Bible in exchange for this review from Thomas Nelson and all opinions are my own.

Bringing It All Together: Best Study Bible Recommendations

Now lets bring it all together. Given all the information above, what study Bible should you choose?

There are certainly going to be elements of preference involved in making your choice. Maybe your church uses one particular translation. Maybe you grew up reading and memorizing the NASB. Maybe you just like the way a particular translation feels.

Additionally, you may be a fan of Sproul or MacArthur or another expositor and want a Bible with study notes written by them.

The point is that youve got a lot of options.

When choosing, I would recommend using this formula :

Preferred Essentially Literal Translation + Interpretation Focused Study Bible + Contributions From Numerous Scholars = The Best Study Bible

I realize that this is an oversimplification, but I believe it gets to the heart of the matter.

What are some Bibles that fit this equation? Here are few:

The Study Bible Matrix: How Do You Want To Study Scripture

There are many study Bible options out there. But theres a simple trick you can use to narrow down your candidates. It all comes down to how you prefer to study the Bible. If you dont know exactly how you prefer to approach Bible study, theres a handy exercise you can use to find out!

    Ask yourself two questions:

Are you more interested in learning what a passage of Scripture means , or how it should affect your life ?

Would you rather have an expert tell you how to interpret and apply Scripture , or figure it out on your own ?

If you put those two sets of choices against each other, you get a general map that almost all study Bibles fall into.

This is the true basis for finding a study Bible that will work for you. If you want to be told how to apply Scripture to become a better leader, youll love the Maxwell Leadership Bible . If you want plenty of space to explore what the Bible means for yourself, The New Inductive Study Bible was made for you .

You dont need to live in one quadrant alone. You might want to use a more autonomous study Bible for personal study so that you can draw more personal applications for yourself. In addition to that, you might prefer to have authoritative notes and articles helping you navigate difficult passages if youre preparing Sunday school lessons. But its important to know what kind of Bible study you plan to do before you choose a study Bible.

What Is A Study Bible Anyway

What is the Best Study Bible?

If youve ever been impressed by the sheer size of someones Bible, odds are good that you were looking at a study Bible. Study Bibles come in sizes from big to enormous, but almost all of them are noticeably thicker, wider, and heavier than a regular Bible.

Thats because a study Bible not only includes the text of Scripture, but also a host of additional content that a regular Bible doesnt have. A given study Bible may be decked out with many, many features (like the NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible, or it might only have a select fewit depends on what that particular resource is for.

Every modern Bible includes the Old and New Testaments, plus a few basic features we expect most books to have. A table of contents, division and chapter headings, page numbers, and the like are par for the course in most Bibles.

Most regular Bibles also include some very basic study helps, such as cross references and footnotes . A regular Bible will often set the words of Christ in red, include a thematic index of Bible verses, and provide simple reading plans. They often top it all off with a few maps in the backwhich make it easier to follow along with the travels of Moses, David, Jesus, and Paul.

A study Bible does all this and more.

Looking For The Best Kjv Study Bible

The following is a list of my top three favorite King James version study Bibles. I own and have used all three of these study Bibles at length. Therefore, I am very familiar with all three of these King James version study Bibles. It is my own opinion that the best KJV study bible ultimately comes down to the readers preference. Each King James version study Bible that I have read has been good in their own right. Each one offers different formats, charts, study notes, illustrations, etc It all comes down to the readers needs.

Do you like colorful maps and pictures in your study bible or is the content of the study notes more valuable to you? Each study Bible has different traits. Also, I would like to point out that everyone has their own style of learning. Some people are visual learners who get the most out of pictures and illustrations, while others gain more from reading charts or doctrinal essays. Everyone has their own methods of learning that suit them the best. People are also at different places in their walk with Christ. The study bible that may be best suited for the new Christian may not challenge a seasoned believer in Christ in the same way.

Best Reference Bibles For Pastors And Preachers

    Posted by Randy A Brown | Sep 29, 2014 | Reference | 4 |

I like Bibles with study helps but I dont always want commentary. Commentary messes with the layout. You might have 2 verses on one page and 20 on the next. Plus the Bibles can be huge and still have a small text. I dont always need to carry the commentary with me. I love the Archaeological Study Bible, but I dont need to carry that information around. For me, study Bibles are better for studying at your desk than carrying with you. What I would rather have with me is a topical index or dictionary. Word studies are good too. I know Im picky.

So I decided to make a list of Bibles that I find helpful in study, research, and sermon prep. In this article well list best reference Bibles for pastors and preachers. These Bibles have tools such as a topical index or dictionary but do not have commentary. Most are KJVs because the King James Version needs more language helps than modern translations. Theyre in no particular order. Click on the titles to see the full reviews.

Which Is The Best Bible Translation To Read

The BEST KJV Study Bible: Common Man’s Reference Bible

With so many Bible translations available in the English language, choosing one thats best for you can be challenging. A lot depends on who you are. Are you a seeker or a new Christian with little knowledge of the Bible? Are you more interested in accuracy for in-depth Bible study or reading through the Bible?

Some versions are word for word translations, while others are thought for thought. Word for word versions translate as precisely as possible from the original languages . Thought for thought translations convey the central idea, and are easier to read, but not as accurate.

The KJV and other early English translations of the New Testament were based on the Textus Receptus, a Greek New Testament published by the Catholic scholar Erasmus in 1516. Erasmus used hand-written Greek manuscripts dating back to the 12th century.

As time passed, older Greek manuscripts became available some dating back to the 3rd century. Scholars discovered the oldest manuscripts were missing verses found in the newer ones that Erasmus used. They thought the verses had probably been added in over the centuries. Therefore, many translations dont have all the verses youll see in the King James Version, or they may have them with a note that they arent found in the oldest manuscripts.
