Is The Devil Mentioned In The Bible

When Were The Angels And Satan Created

The Mystery Behind Devil’s Bible

The Bible doesnt give the exact timing of the creation of Satan and theangels; however, we can make several deductions from Scripture concerning thetiming. Lets begin by examining Ezekiel 28:1119; NKJV:

In the sections prior to this, the word of the Lord was to Tyre itself and to the ruler of Tyre . Beginning in Ezekiel 28:11, alament is expressed to the kingof Tyre; or more specifically, to the one influencing the king of Tyre. Note wellthat the king of Tyre was never a model of perfection , nor was he onthe mount of God , nor was he in the Garden of Eden .

God easily sees Satans influence and speaks directly to him. Elsewhere theLord spoke to the serpent in Genesis 3 is said to the serpent; Genesis 3:15 is said to Satan who influenced the serpent. Jesus rebuked Peter andthen spoke to Satan . In Isaiah 14, the passage speaks to the king ofBabylon and some parts to Satan, who was influencing him.

In the Ezekiel passage we note that Satan was originally perfect from the day he was created until he sinned .Thus, we can deduce that Satan was created during creation week; since he wasblameless, he was under Gods very good proclamation at theend of day 6.

In Job 38:47; NKJV, God spoke to Job:

If so, the creation of the angels was prior to day 3 during creation week. From Genesis 1, God created the foundations of the earth on either day 1 or day 3 . The logical inference is that theangels were created on either day 1 or at least by day 3.

Is Satan In The Old Testament

When did the Adversary first appear?

The existence of Satan is one of the central doctrines of Christianity. He is evil incarnate, an immortal being that exists solely to corrupt and tempt human beings into committing offenses against God. He was in the Garden of Eden and was responsible for the original fall of man. He was originally an angel, Lucifer, but rebelled against God and continues to rebel to this day.;

The Devil Tried To Make At Least One Deal

Making deals with the devil is a common storytelling motif. And although the Bible doesnt say anything about fiddles made of gold, Scripture does tell us of at least one attempted bargain Satan tried to make.

We looked at Satans attempts to tempt Jesus earlier in this list. Satan offered all the kingdoms of the world to Jesus.

But there was a catch: Jesus would have to bow down and worship the devil.

Lucky for us, the Son of God will not be bartered with in this way. Jesus tells the tempter, Away from me, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only .

Why is Jesus refusal to bargain important?

Heiser explains that Satans offer was a clever attempt to get Jesus to pay for something Satan stole. Had Jesus given in, it would have been an acknowledgment that Satans permission was needed to possess the nations. It wasnt. Satan presumed power and ownership of something that, ultimately, was not his but Gods. The messaging behind Jesus answer is clear: Yahweh will take the nations back by his own means in his own time. He doesnt need them to be given away in a bargain. Jesus was loyal to his Father. Since reclaiming the nations was connected with salvation and redemption from the effects of the fall in Eden, accepting Satans offer would have undermined the necessity of the atonement of the cross.

Bible Verses About The Devil

Codex Gigas

You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Though they intended evil against YouAnd devised a plot,

I know where you dwell, where Satans throne is; and you hold fast My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days of Antipas, My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

Devil In The Old Testament

The word “devil” occurs only four times in the Authorised Version of the Old Testament, and not at all in the New King James and New International Versions.

The references in the Authorised Version are:

  • Leviticus 17 v 7
  • 2Chronicles 11 v 15
  • and Psalm 106 v 37

If you look at these verses and the verses around them, you will see that they are referring to false gods.

Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

Satans Domain Is Earth And Sheol

Lucifer: The Fallen Angel (Biblical Stories Explained)

In the third chapter of Genesis, the serpent persuades Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, expelling them from Eden and sealing their doom.

But although Adam and Eve are punished, Satan gets the fiercest curse from the God he rebelled against.

The Lord says to him: Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life .

What does this curse mean for Satan?

The serpent was cursed to crawl on its belly. This is strikingly similar to the fate of our villain in Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14, who is cast down to the ground .

But its worse than just getting knocked to the ground. The prophets say this rebel was cast to erets, a Hebrew term Heiser says can refer literally to the dirt and metaphorically to the underworld.

Heiser goes on to explain the serpents fate: The curse also had him eating dirt, clearly a metaphorical reference, since snakes dont really eat dirt as food for nutrition. It isnt part of the natural snake diet. The point being made by the curse is that the nachash , who wanted to be most high, will be most low insteadcast away from God and the council to earth, and even under the earth. In the underworld, the nachash is even lower than the beasts of the field. He is hidden from view and from life in Gods world. His domain is death.

What Will Become Of Satan

Satans days are numbered, and he will be condemned eternally.

Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woeto the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has comedown to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has ashort time .

And he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, andset a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more tillthe thousand years were finished. But after these things he must bereleased for a little while .

We should have no fear of Satan or his minions, since God has power overhim and has already decreed what his outcome will bea second deathaneternal punishment called hell.

Then He will also say to those on the left hand, Depart fromMe, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and hisangels .

The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire andbrimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will betormented day and night forever and ever .

The Devil Knows Scripture

Next, the devil cites Psalm 91:1112 to entice Jesus to jump off the roof of the temple to test Gods love for his Son . Jesus answers Satan right back with Scripture:

Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

If you think Scripture cant be twisted for evil purposes, you need look no further than this passage to realize this is one of the major ways Satan attacks Christians. Just as the devil twists Gods command to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden , he repeats the same drill with Jesus in the wilderness. Christians must be equipped with Gods Word like Jesus was so they can stand strong against the devil. Yet, knowing Scripture is not enough; Christians also need to know how to interpret Bible verses in their proper context to employ them effectively against all the devils schemes.

Satan Is A Liar By Nature

Jesus tells us that lying is second nature to the devil. He doesnt sugarcoat it, either:

He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies .

The apostles tell us that our enemy is a great deceiver, too. When early church member Ananias makes a shady donation, Peter asks, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit ? . And Paul later tells the Corinthian church that the serpent deceived Eve through cunning lies , and goes on to say that Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light .

But Satans deceitfulness doesnt stop with Satan. And his followers arent limited to the unseen realm, either.

Unfortunately, there are others under Satans influence.

Where Angels Come From

Codex Gigas en [PDF Library]

The Bible gives us reason to believe that angels are simply people who have died and gone to heaven. In fact, the Bible clearly states that angels are “men” or “people.” For example, we are told that “the man Gabriel” appeared to Daniel . Angels were also called people when they appeared to Abraham , Joshua , Manoah’s wife , Ezekiel , Zechariah , and the women at the sepulcher , Angels have always looked like people. That is why Paul says, “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels” .

In both Hebrew and Greek, the words for “angel” simply mean “messenger.” Being an angel is a matter of one’s function or office, not one’s race. For example, Haggai the prophet and John the Baptist were called messengers or “angels” of the Lord because they spoke for Him . Angels themselves reject the idea that they are superior beings. An angel said to John the Apostle, “I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus” . The first chapter of the Bible mentions the creation of almost everything else: sun, moon, stars, people, animals, birds, plants, ocean, fish, even insects and worms. But no angels! The reason is that people were created to become angels. Jesus Himself said that those who are worthy become after death “equal to angels” and would have similar powers .

When Did Satan Fall

Satan sinned when pride overtook him, and he fell from perfection . When was this? The Bible doesnt give an exact answer either, butdeductions can again be made from the Scriptures.

How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened thenations! For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven,I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on themount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I willascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High(Isaiah 14:1214; NKJV

When he sinned, he was cast from heaven . This must havebeen after day 6 of creation week because God pronounced everything verygood . Otherwise, God would have pronounced Satans rebellionvery good; yet throughout Scripture, God is absolute that sin is detestable inHis eyes.

God sanctified the seventh day. It seems unlikely that God would havesanctified a day in which a great rebellion occurred. In Genesis 1:28, God commandedAdam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply. Had they waited very longto have sexual relations, they would have been sinning against God by notbeing fruitful. So, it couldnt have been long after day 7 that Satan tempted thewoman through the serpent.

Regardless, the fall of Satan would likely have been soon after day 7.

Satans Power Of Death Is Broken

It turns out that Jesus death broke at least some of Satans deathly power. The author of Hebrews explains it this way:

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of deaththat is, the devil15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death .

The power of death is waning. Paul claims that death will be swallowed up in victory . And in the book of Revelation, Christ proclaims, I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades .
