Different Paths Different Mountains

The Bible is Not the Word of God | Atheist Experience #483

Conventional wisdom these days dictates that the various religions are just different roads up the same mountain. It doesnt matter which God you trust because they are all the same. Allah is Jehovah Buddhists and Hindus seek the same God we worship. Different holy books are simply religious diaries. Whos to say that your diary is right and mine is wrong?

Such an approach to world religions and their writings feels tolerant and hopeful. But is it true? Do other religions agree with this characterization of their faith commitments?

In a word, no.

Buddhist beliefs

Buddha taught that there is no god, despite the fact that some of his followers now worship him. He instructed his disciples to avoid all material desires that they might cease their sufferings. The Four Noble Truths and Noble Eightfold Path are the keys to enlightenment. The Tripitika is the oldest compilation of the rules, sermons, and doctrines of this approach to life.

Hindu beliefs

Hindus believe in thousands of territorial deities but no Lord of the universe Brahman is the divine force that sustains the universe, not a personal God to be worshiped. The Rigveda, their earliest scriptures, refer to Brahman as the power that is present in religious sacrifices and actions. Their Upanishads glorify the concept of Brahman over other inferior forms of personal deities.

Jesus Words Are In The Bible

While the Bible itself is the Word of God, it also contains the Word of God: the eternal Word of God, Jesus Christ. We cant see or touch Jesus, but the apostles did, and the apostle John writes that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you . We know Jesus through the words of the Bible.

Is The King James Bible The Perfect Word Of God

Instead, I will demonstrate why it is the perfect Word of God. The King James Bible is the complete Word of God.

So at the end of this Bible study, I want you to realize that despite how the Bible started, how it was published and printed, what it experienced, it is indeed the version or translation of the Bible that the Lord is pleased with and that is key.

If the Lord is pleased with it, thats the end of the story, no discussion, no debate.

Paul And John Vs Matthew Mark Luke

Although Paul never quotes Jesus, his writings are relevant to this topic because it appears that John got much of his teaching from Paul especially the salvation through faith concept. This in itself is additional proof of the central theme of this website i.e. The Bible is So Wrong About So Much. Either the picture painted by Matthew, Mark and Luke is correct , or Paul and John are correct. Most likely they are all wrong. The entirety of the New Testament is a set of selected writings that best market Jesus to the illiterate superstitious unwashed masses.

Knowlege And The Bible

Sometimes Christians quote the Bible to prove the Bible. Most skeptics are rightly cautious of this approach.

Quoting the Bible to prove the Bible is viewed as being circular reasoning or illogical. After all, quoting the Bible to prove the Bible assumes the Bible is true, which is really the point of contention or discussion.

But if the Bible can be shown to be a reliable document, accurately recorded and transmitted through history, from God to us, then we can build a strong case that the Bible is indeed true.

Isnt The Bible Filled With Contradictions

Why You Can Believe the Bible Is the Word of God

Here is one of the most common ways skeptics justify their skepticism about the Bible. The question is based on the commonplace supposition that contradictions are bad. If you can find a statement I make that disagrees with something Ive already said, youll feel justified in rejecting both. Even though one may be right. Even though they both may be.

Prophecy Of The Second Coming

Every practicing Christian looks forward to the Second Coming of Jesus. The impending arrival of Jesus is used to drum up business for churches and win new converts. It could happen at any minute. It could happen right now.

According to the Bible, the 2nd Coming has already happened.

There is a problem with this notion. If one believes the Bible, the Second Coming would already have to of happened. Why do I say this. In Matthew 16:28, Jesus plainly states to those standing around him, hearing his voice that some of those present, will not experience death before they see him coming in his Kingdom. For the words of Jesus to be true, there would have to be some people walking around who are over 2,000 years old.

Hopefully you will agree, there are no 2,000 year old people living today. Thus if the prophecy was correct and fulfilled, This entire thing we call Christianity is moot. Jesus has already come back, got his folks and gone. Another failed prophecy and Biblical error.

Literacy Rates Publishing Costs

One of the problems with looking back at history is we filter history through the lens of today. 2,000 years ago, less than 10% of the population was actually literate. By that I mean could read and write. Less than 20% could read just a little. They couldnt write but they could figure out simple messages if they saw them written down. This means 80% of the population not only could not read, but they could not even sign their names if you asked them to.

Books, scrolls and writing were the province of the extremely wealthy and even then, only the wealthy who actually took an interest in such things. In todays dollars with a denarii figured at roughly $21, a single sheet of papyrus cost $30. A book would cost anywhere between $10,000 to $100,000 or more to have in your library. There were no printing presses so each book had to be painstakingly copied letter by letter by a Scribe and they didnt come cheap. A Scribe was paid between $420 and $525 per 100 lines of text. This probably had a lot to do with why so few people invested the time in learning to read or write. Compared to growing your food, tending your livestock, repairing your domicile and making enough money to pay your taxes and care for yourself and your family, being literate was way down on the list of priorities.

Why Is The Word Of God Important

Why God

It may seem like common sense, a well duh sort of situation, but when we really consider it, this is actually a very deep and important concept for us. All scripture is God-breathed. So that section that youd rather pretend is not part of the Bible? Yeah, thats also Gods word. Its all what God wants you to know, and He wants you to know it accurately.

There are 31,102 verses in the Bible and each one God has poured His heart into. How well do you actually know the Bible? And by extension, how well do you know God? Think about the autobiography. If someone never read your book and never spoke to you in person, yet claimed to know you, how would you react?

You dont know me.

Isnt that how you would feel? No matter what personal spiritual experiences we may have had, it is the Bible that has been given for us to know God, and that should be our priority.

We All Pick And Choose The Bible We Believe Preach And Defend

Christians often accuse believers with differing opinions of cherry picking from the Bible holding tightly to verses they agree with, while conveniently jettisoning ones they are uncomfortable with.

The only problem is, each time this assertion is made, the one making the accusation conveniently claims objectivity as if they somehow have a firm, dispassionate understanding of the entirety of Scripture, without bias or prejudice, and that the other is violating that.

As we mature in our faith, some of us may be able to shake off some of our personal biases and get closer to the true meaning of Scripture. But until then, most of us have our own Bible, made somewhat in our image. There are as many specific individual interpretations of Scripture in history as there have been readers of it. Our understanding and belief about the Bible is a product of our upbringing, the amount of study weve had, the friends weve lived alongside, the area of the world we live in, the experiences we have and much more.

Is it really fair to accuse someone else of selectively using Scripture, unless were prepared to admit to the same crime in the process?

How The Hebrew Scriptures Came To Be

Christians typically call this section the Old Testament, but those who wrote the New Testament didnt.

When Paul, writing from death row in Rome, asked Timothy for his scrolls and parchments , he was asking for his copies of the only Bible he knew. Most scholars appropriately call these thirty-nine books the Hebrew Scriptures, in deference to the Jewish faith they express.

The Hebrew Bible was first divided into Law, Prophets, and Writings, the arrangement current in Jesus day .

The Jews numbered the Scriptures as twenty-four books, combining Ezra/Nehemiah, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, 1 and 2 Chronicles, and the 12 Minor Prophets as The Twelve. These books were written and compiled over centuries of use.

According to Jewish tradition, a council of rabbis and scholars met at Jamnia on the Mediterranean Sea in AD 90 and again in AD 118. They finalized the list of books as we have them today, recognizing what their people had accepted as Gods word for centuries.

Summary Question 14 How Do We Know The Bible Is The Word Of God

While the Bible claims to be the authoritative Word of God, there have been two basic approaches as to how anyone can know these claims are true. One approach believes that the Bible should be taken at its Word and not defended. The Holy Spirit will show the truth of its claim to anyone who is interested in knowing. Nothing else is necessary. This way the Bible is not made subject to any other type of authority.

On the other hand, there are those who point to evidences that God has provided to argue for the truth of Scripture. These include miracles, fulfilled prophecy and Jesus resurrection from the dead. Taken together, they constitute overwhelming evidence for the truth of Gods Word. Christians employ both methods in defending and proclaiming Scripture.

However, merely knowing intellectually that the Bible is Gods Word is not enough. The Bible says that we need to personally experience the God of the Bible by believing in His promises and submitting to His commands.

The Bible is a collection of sacred books written by ancient prophets and historians. These authors recorded the relationship between God and His people for over 4,000 years. Their inspired words are what we know today as the Holy Bible.

Following the teachings found in the Bible helps us to know who God is, learn from good people who loved Him, and better understand how He wants us to live.

What Does God Do When He Requires A Temple

Now, he places that desire into the heart of David, his servant to build him a house for his name. But because David was a man of war and shed blood, the Lord wouldnt allow him to build him a temple.

Instead, the Lord allowed Davids son who was also a King, King Solomon, to build a temple for the name of the Lord. This is important you know, we can see references of these in and .

Who Heard Jesus Conversation With Fellow Criminal

Luke 23:39-43 is a transcript of a conversation between a fellow criminal and Jesus:

But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, to day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Think about it. The three are high on the cross, the multitudes are crying out for Jesus blood , Jesus and the other criminal are chatting it up while in agony. Who heard this conversation? How could it possibly have been heard above the noise of the multitudes? Who so precisely recorded the conversation? This tall tale was finally recorded some 50 years after it allegedly happened. If you want to claim that the Holy Spirit was in charge of getting this accurately recorded, then you have to explain why Matthew and Mark have different stories.

The Bible Is Gods Heart And Will In Writing

Since God is not able to come stand before us or speak to us in an audible voice, His word is how He tells us everything. So much more than just a book, the Bible is Gods whole heart.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:1

The Bible is so important in understanding Gods heart, will, character His story that God goes as far as to say that the Word is Him. Think about if you wrote an autobiography. Every word, every page is your heart that you want to convey to your audience. Imagine holding that finished product in your hands. The effort and tears, the laughter and pain that went into it it would be like holding your own heart in your hands.

The Bible is Gods heart, packaged into a letter and carried by his messengers, whether it be Moses, the prophets, David, Jesus, or the apostles.

Is The King James Bible The Original

Lea The Word of God: Why We Use the King James Bible de ...

Nevertheless, a short background is necessary at this juncture.

So what is the King James Bible? It is the version of the Word of God that the Lord is pleased with.

The King James Version or Authorized Version or King James Bible is the English translation of the Bible.

It was published in 1611 and authorized by King James The First of England, thus we have the Authorized Version.

The Lord was not happy with all the English Bibles that were in circulation prior to King James The First.

Consequently, I want you to understand that if He were happy with all those English Bibles before King James came on the scene, we wouldnt have had the King James Version of the Bible.

The Lord would have allowed the status quo to continue as it were, but he changed it. Lets go to a scripture.

Im going to read from .

Consequently, I want you to understand that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomever He will and setteth up over it the basest of men .

And this is not my political statement of our current political leadership, this is just the true Word of God.
