Does The Bible Say Anything About Masturbation

What About Phone Sex With My Spouse

Satan wants you to “Master”bate

Where there tends to be shame associated with masturbation, the marriage bed was designed as a place where shame does not exist. God designed sex as a gift and what an amazing gift it is! With that said, the marriage bed should be honored, cherished, and enjoyed as the gift it is . The marriage bed is a place to be visited and enjoyed often and it is the place where our souls intertwine, the place where unity happens a place where two become one . In other words, the marriage bed is a place for exploration, pleasure, unity, and delight.

And in this day and in age, our spouses travel, often for long periods of time. Thats not to say couples in the Bible didnt deal with long-distance periods either, however, they didnt have cellphones and Facetime either. We begin to tread into murky waters. What may be healthy for one couple may not be healthy for another because phone sex could open pandoras box to masturbation alone, lustful fantasies of other people, and pornography. However, for some couples, it is a part of their healthy sex life.

Is It Wrong For Girls/women To Masturbate

What the Bible teaches us about masturbation does not change based on gender. Whether you are a man or a woman, we should apply the same principles. It is not okay for a man to look at another woman with a lustful mind, and it is not okay for a woman to look at another man with a lustful mind either.

Ephesians 5:22-32 says:

It is the living out of the divine purpose and beauty of human sexuality, which is to prefigure and embody the marriage between Christ and the Church. The action of self-gratification can harm the beauty of sexual satisfaction within a marriage.

This verse tells us it is our purpose as a man and woman to live out the beauty of our creation by procreating and maintaining a heterosexual relationship that glorifies God and represents the Church. Self-gratification is merely a way to bandage what we might be lacking in our personal lives.

For a woman, masturbation might work as a temporary mechanism for satisfying sexual desire. She might turn to masturbation instead of seeking male partners, one-night stands, and other random sexual encounters. While this might seem like a better solution, the Bible tells us that masturbation is no different from other sexual temptations, and we should abstain from all of them.

Pointing To Truth Breaking The Habit

God created men and women to experience sexual fulfillment on a much higher level: within marriage. We dont want anything to threaten their chances of knowing that joy to the fullest.

But masturbation is a threat.

It can become extremely addictive because of the powerful hormonal and psychological elements of human sexual behavior. Individuals who become addicted to masturbation might carry it with them into adult married life. There, it can become a serious obstacle to healthy marital intimacy.

Masturbation also frequently involves indulging in sexual fantasy. And fantasy, says Jesus, does represent a serious breach of a persons mental and spiritual purity .

One thing to remember is that masturbation often starts as self-soothing behavior. Its a way to cope with pressures and try to meet basic human needs for peace, security, comfort, and reassurance.

So if you struggle with masturbation, plan to replace the negative behavior with a valid way to address your underlying needs. Talk things over with a friend, take a hike, read a good book, listen to music, pour yourself into a project, or serve other people.

The Bible Says Nothing About Masturbation

Yes, you heard me right. The Bible does not say one word about masturbation.

The idea that masturbation is a sin was originated and promulgated by Christian priests and theologians long after the Bible was written.

The Bible itself simply isnt concerned about masturbation. If it were, it would have said something about it. But it doesnt.

The Bible does contain many general exhortations to preserve sexual purity. But it never identifies masturbation as a sexual impurity. Rather:

  • It prohibits adultery, which is sexual relations when one or both people involved is married to someone else, and
  • It generally discourages fornication, which is when two unmarried people have sex.

Notice that I did not say that it prohibits fornication.

The commandment is not, Thou shalt not have extramarital sex, but Thou shalt not commit adultery .

The Bible unequivocally forbids adultery. But its views on non-adulterous extramarital sex are more pragmatic. The reality is that quite a few people in the Bible engage in extramarital sex, and they are not necessarily condemned for it. Why Doesnt The Bible Mention Masturbation

Is pleasuring yourself a sin. Is pleasuring yourself a sin.

February 15, 2016 by admin

With this blog Im stepping onto some very tender territory and tackling a gripping question that many have wondered about. We know that masturbation has been with the human race from the beginning, and that it has certainly been on Gods radar. Why, then, did He make no mention of that word in the Bible? When God identified various kinds of sin in the Bible, why didnt He include masturbation?

First of all, I dont think its because the word embarrasses Him. When you read the Bible cover to cover, you realize that God isnt embarrassed by explicit sexual language, nor is He reticent to tackle tough topics head-on.

Secondly, I dont think its because He doesnt consider it a sin. I agree with many who view it as a sinful behavior before God. The reason I think its a sin is because, while the Bible doesnt name it specifically, it points to it in several places. Masturbation involves lust in the heart, which Jesus addressed in Matthew 5:27-30. The Bible also warns against uncleanness , which things include masturbation.

So then, why isnt masturbation mentioned in the Bible as a sin?

Im going to give you my opinion on this question, and I want to emphasize that what follows is my opinion, not a dogmatic theological position.

To say it succinctly, I dont think God wanted masturbation cited as a sin in the Bible because of how the devil would use such a verse as a tool for accusation and condemnation. Let me explain what I mean.

Does The Bible Say That Masturbation Is A Sin

Below is a brief summary of some of the issues dealing with this subject. I hope it might help. This is one of those hot buttons on which there is a great deal of disagreement and what is given here by no means touches all the bases.

Summary: The Bible no where specifically forbids or denounces masturbation. It does, of course, denounce all forms of sexual impurity and fantasies that would involve adulterous relationships whether actual or mental. The problem with masturbation is that it not only can become habit forming and addictive, but men and women often engage in pornography and adulterous fantasies in order to reach a climax. Further, the difference in sex drive in a couple is often not the real problem or issue. It is rather a breakdown in the relationship and in an understanding of the role of sex in marriage as that which not only gives pleasure but expresses love, unity, and commitment to each other. Masturbation expresses the opposite unless done with the other partner. The husband may experience orgasm with his wife without actual intercourse. If away from his wife and he is experiencing strong sexual desire and he can have an orgasm by thinking about his wife, etc. then that could be appropriate.

Much more could be said, but this will give you a few things to think about. There are plenty of theologians and pastors, etc., that I am sure would disagree with my comments on this, but here are some things for consideration.

Bible Principles That Apply To Masurbation

Lets begin with an important biblical principle taught by our Lord that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart .

A person who practices masturbation without imagining sex with someone is rare indeed, if he or she exists at all. On that basis, the practice is tantamount to engaging in adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior or any number of other sexual practices that the mind can imagine even idolatry, as revealed in Ephesians 5:5, Colossians 3:5 and Ezekiel 23:49.

In a certain sense, it could be said that masturbation is a form of mental pornography, which we all know to be sinful.

We also know sin by the witness of the Holy Spirit within, provided we havent quenched that witness through ongoing rebellion . And who doesnt live with guilt over the practice of masturbation even those who have convinced themselves that it isnt sinful?

Additionally, the Bible teaches that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit a sacred temple and that it is a member of Christ Himself . If we are warned against uniting Christ in us to a prostitute, why would we want to unite Him to the immoral thoughts and images in our minds?

Finally, a very important biblical principle that is often overlooked in our search to discover if masturbation is sinful is found in 1 Corinthians 6:12 2 Peter 2:19-20 and Romans 6:14-23 that whatever masters us is harmful to us. In short, a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.

What Does The Bible Say About Masturbation

  • What does the Bible say about Masturbation?

What does the Bible say about masturbation?

The Bible doesnt say anything about the act of masturbation. Which, when you stop to consider, is rather significant. It mentions in explicit detail every other sexual act known to man. Masturbation just does not show up.However, I believe Jesus is making an indirect reference to it in Matthew 5:27-30. Lets break down this passage:

You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

At the time Jesus said this, his audience was well aware that adultery was a sin. In fact, they were proud of the fact they were not adulterers. Jesus takes it a step further saying to lust after someone means that adultery has already taken place in your heart. So, lust is bad. Lets ask the obvious question. Can you masturbate without lusting?95% of masturbation is linked to pornography. In fact, I would say the majority of masturbation is a result of some form of pornography. If you were to cut out ALL forms of pornography in your life, the desire to masturbate will go down significantly. You might be asking the question, can I look at porn without lusting? I am going to go out on a limb and say um. hmmm NO!

Masturbation: Is It Wrong

The “M” Word | Episode 1 – Silence

Because my job is to talk to women about sex, there are few questions that I haven’t heard and haven’t answered. However, there is one common question that I don’t like to answer. It involves the “M” wordmasturbation.

One of the reasons I dread this question is because there is no clear answer. I could take the easy road and just say, “If in doubt, don’t do it.” The fact is that many Christian women masturbate and feel horribly guilty about it. I’ve met women who feel more shame about masturbation than they do about having an adulterous affair. Yet the Bible is silent on the issue of masturbation and says a whole lot about adultery.

Masturbation is a complicated issue that doesn’t lend to a clear black and white answer. I want to be realistic about the struggle without giving freedom that God perhaps hasn’t given.

Let’s start with the basics

At a purely biological level, masturbation isn’t that much different than other things we do with our bodieslike picking our noses. Toddlers do both. They are wired to touch their bodies everywhere and repeat touching where they find pleasure. Little boys and girls quickly discover that their “private parts” feel really good to touch. As children grow, wise parents gently teach that touching some places of our bodies isn’t appropriate to do in public. And they teach their kids not to pick their noses in public either.

1. What are you thinking about?

2. What is your motive?

3. Is it mastering you?

4. Am I honoring God with my body?

What Do I Do If This Is An Issue

If masturbation is causing you to lust, if it is replacing sex in your marriage, if it has become a habit that you have trouble breaking, what should you do? As difficult as it may be, the most helpful option would be to confide in someone you trust a pastor, a close friend, a counselor, or a mentor. They can help you by asking you every few days how you are doing, and by encouraging you, and praying for you. They can help you form a plan to get through a day or two at a time, and they can be there for you when you fail. If masturbation is causing pain in your marriage that isnt resolved, speaking to a marriage counselor can help you work through this area. Again, one of the assurances that we have in the bible is that our Savior is not one who is unfamiliar with our temptations and struggles, but one who was tempted in every way as we are, yet was without sin. Jesus can relate to our weaknesses. And because he knows our weaknesses, and because he has conquered sin, he is for us both an advocate who defends us before God, and a Savior who gives us strength to break sinful habits.

Masturbation is a tough topic to tackle. At best, its embarrassing to talk about, even with our spouse and at worst, it can be a cause for guilt and shame. Yet it remains a very real matter for nearly everyone. Gods word says nothing specifically about this subject, which gives us freedom within boundaries to find the place that it may have in our life.

Can Masturbation Be Helpful

Suppose you find that you are able to masturbate occasionally without falling into the trap of lust, and suppose that, if you are married, you enjoy a healthy sex life with your spouse. Can masturbation serve a helpful purpose? There may be several ways in which it can, assuming that you are hiding nothing from your spouse.

  • Masturbation can provide sexual release if and when sex is not possible due to distance, or other factors. Sometimes chronic illness prevents frequent sexual intimacy. Sometimes your spouse may refuse you sexually, and may not be willing to address the sexual and other relationship issues, and so masturbation can become an outlet in a less-than-ideal situation.
  • Masturbation can help you understand your body better so that you can communicate your needs and desires to your spouse. If masturbation is giving you a context to experiment, so that you better understand what does and does not feel good, and how your body can experience sexual climax, you can then share this with your spouse so that your sexual enjoyment is enhanced.

What Young Women Need To Remember

Again, at its core, masturbation is lust. There are many things in this world that we have the choice to engage in, but as believers, may not be beneficial to our walk or purpose. It is best to refrain from engaging in those questionable acts. I desire to inspire women who are caught in this sin to think about how you live your life as a child of God. It’s not about how close you can get to the line how far you can go before it’s technically sinning. It’s about living a life that is free in the blessing and favor of God and glorifies Him.

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit a place for the glory and power of God to reside. And any defilement of it is an act against God. Take in and act out those thoughts, words, and actions that bring glory to your Creator. This is a life pleasing to Goda life that honors Him. Now, with a foundation of why masturbation is, in most cases, sin, let’s talk about a woman’s struggle with it. Whether it be to fulfill arousal from an emotional and passionate daydream or simply because of physical desire, it’s happening to more than just a few women, even Christian women.

Here are 4 ways to find freedom from masturbation:

The Principle Of Grace

Does the Bible say anything about masturbation?

It should be noted that we are not referring to the innocent exploration of the body that goes on among children and adolescents. In fact, a harsh approach in such cases can create a fixation or obsession in the mind of the child.

Even worse, if the child doesnt respect his or her parents, it can create an avenue for rebellion that is safely cloaked in secrecy. Curiosity, guilt and feelings of condemnation are also at play in such scenarios.

We must remember the biblical principle, that it is Gods grace and love that teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions .

After all, it is His grace that saved us from not only the penalty of sin, but the power of sin as well.

This provision of grace is also available to the adult believer who continues to practice masturbation in spite of valiant attempts to stop. Ill never forget when the Lord made this clear to me.

After some success, marred by repeated failures, I was remonstrating against myself one night, when the Lord clearly spoke to my spirit, saying, You are much harder on yourself than I would ever be!

It was a moment of applied grace that enabled me to stop crucifying myself at every failure and take a fresh approach to finding freedom.

That approach involved a focus on developing intimacy with God rather than a fixation on my failures.
