Not only will you be comforted if you are experiencing grief, but you are also blessed. In the presence of the Lord, there are many blessings, and He will comfort you in your worst times of trouble.

Therefore Humble Yourselves Under The Mighty Hand Of God That He May Exalt You In Due Time Casting All Your Care Upon Him For He Cares For You 1 Peter : 6

Sometimes our suffering is brought upon us by ourselves. There are times that we have exalted ourselves much more than we should, and God needs to step in to bring us back down.

Part of healing must include humility and humbling ourselves in case we are causing ourselves pain through pride. Once we have humbled ourselves, we can cast our cares and worries on the Lord and He will care for us, wrapping His arms of healing around us.

Is Grief Just The Loss Of Life

Grief is experienced by those who have lost a loved one, but people may grieve other losses, as well. The loss of a pet, the loss of a relationship, or the loss of a job may be other things that people grieve. Each loss is different and results in a unique grief journey. In fact, no two people grieve exactly the same way. For example, married people will grieve differently than one another, or even siblings raised in the same home will grieve differently. People grieve in distinct ways due to personality, coping skills, life experiences, and a variety of other issues related to the loss.

You can support someone by allowing them to grieve, accepting their emotions, and taking the time to educate yourself about healthy grief. Regardless of the loss, we can help our friends while they grieve by acknowledging their loss, rather than minimizing or dismissing it. We can help them by giving them permission to grieve instead of rushing them to feel better.

Never Become Stranded In True Grief

We dont want to discount the grief, but we also dont want to become stranded there. Perhaps youve heard of the grief cycle. Psychologists tell us that in times of catastrophic loss, we experience deep emotions that we must process. The emotions come in waves or cyclesdenial, isolation, anger, questioning, guilt, depression, and finally acceptance. Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross formulated the basic model for the grieving process in the 1960s, but she taught it with flexibility, knowing everyone deals with things differently. Grief is not a conveyor belt. God created us with deep feelings and tender love, and we have to personally work our way through our sorrows with the truths of His Word. But how important it is not to become stuck in the middle of the grief process. I dont believe the Lordor our loved ones in heavenwould want us to spend years in denial, or isolation, or anger, or asking what ifs, or in depression.

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this ?

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds

Do not let your heart be troubled believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Fathers house are many dwelling places if it were not so, I would have told you for I go to prepare a place for you. And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first

For His Anger Is But For A Moment His Favor Is For Life Weeping May Endure For A Night But Joy Comes In The Morning Psalm : 5

Throughout the Bible, we see a contrast between Gods anger and His mercy. Yet in every single instance, it is stressed that Gods anger is temporary, but His mercy is forever. His mercy wins out over His anger every time.

Just like this, we may experience grief for a time, but the time to heal is coming. We have to remember that grief is temporary, but Gods eternal joy and mercy are just around the corner.

How Does Your Relationship With Jesus Help You Transform More Into His Likeness As Your Grief Ebbs And Flows

How does that work do you think?

Dan: Yeah, if there was just one answer, we would say it, but there isn’t is there? There are trigger points that bring grief, just like a sucker punch, right? Then there are times when it feels more manageable. Like Anna said, as long as we don’t let that be something that makes us bitter, then we can allow God to help us in that pain.

Matt: Yeah. In a few weeks time, we’re going to do a talk called What does the Bible say about cancer? It’s an interview that I do with a beautiful lady called, Annie. With cancer, there’s a lot of grieving in some respects to be done, not necessarily because of the loss of life, but maybe the loss of a way of life.

One of the things about Annie, about having known her for years, and I’d say the same about Anna, having known Anna for a little while, what you can come away with from their story is grief, loss and tragedy hits everyone, the Christian and the non-Christian alike. What you can’t do is stop that. What you can do is respond. What you can do is decide how you’re going to come out of it, how you’re going to work through it.

Dan: Yeah, absolutely. I think that’s what struck me about Anna’s talk, that God’s beauty and glory has shone through her as He has brought her through that experience.

Matt: I also think that God might help you to bring a difference to other people. You mentioned your mates who have experienced loss in the family. Let’s talk about this from the other side.

Special Note: Bible Verses About Depression

Depression. Even reading or saying the word can start to bring me down a bit, so where do I begin? One of the Bible Verses About Depression that comes to mind is Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy . As well, the writer of Ecclesiastes sums up the range of our emotional responses to life with there is a time for everything. Yes, this includes the natural human emotion of being depressed. I have been there too, but Gods hand and my faith in Him brought me out of the deepest darkest places.

The National Institute of Mental Health says that depression is a common, but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. Like anxiety, depression is an emotional response that can easily take on physical characteristics.

Historically in America, depression was somewhat ignored by the mainstream and generally treated as something you just needed to get over. But thats not the attitude we see in these Bible verses about depression. Gods heart is to heal us. Thankfully, due to horrendous high profile tragedies over the past couple of decades, the tides have turned in our response and care for those suffering from these debilitating diseases.

The Lord Is Close To The Brokenhearted And Saves Those Who Are Crushed In Spirit

You will feel all alone as you grieve. Even in a crowded room. And when there is no one around you, you will be tempted to think that God is not even with you. But this is not true. For God tells us he is near the broken hearted. And when we grieve, our hearts are broken in a million pieces.

You may find that some people step back from you as you grieve. Please understand that those who step back just want things to be like they were before this loss. They feel helpless and they simply dont know what to do. Other people may not want to enter into your grief. But even if you dont feel like God is near, he is.

And hes not going anywhere.

Hearing Gods Voice Of Hope

Our enemy, the devil, does not want you to have hope. Christian counselor Sandra D. Wilson offers help to hear Gods voice of hope above any other voices. The following guidelines are based on her book Into Abbas Arms: Finding the Acceptance Youve Always Wanted and on Peter Lords book Hearing God.

God calls and woos us with the gentle voice of a shepherd who leads his sheep. Like a ravenous wolf, Satan seeks to drive sheep into panic. He threatens, demands and intimidates. The Lords voice is quiet and internal. Satans voice is intrusive.God always speaks in ways that align with major principles of Scripture and his revealed attributes.Gods voice drips with mercy and grace toward us and toward others. He does not condemn our personal worth.Gods voice is grounded in truth and hope.We receive hope when God speaks to us. Satans voice speaks hopeless despair.

Even in the midst of terrible pain and loss, Gods voice lovingly offers hope. God has plans for hope and your future. Take one step at a time. Hold tightly to the handrail of hope, even when you cannot see it.

What Can I Say To Someone Who Is Grieving

It can be hard to know what to say to someone who is grieving. But do not let that keep you from supporting a friend who has lost a loved one. What we say to a grieving person is less important than our willingness to be present with them. You can visit, sit in silence, and be available to help with a need that arises, such as preparing a meal, babysitting, or driving them to an appointment. Although there is no one size fits all thing to say, here are some helpful things you can say to a grieving friend.

How are you managing?

This is a great question to use when you want to check in with the person in a way that invites a conversation. This question will not result in a one-word answer, but rather will give the grieving person a chance to share as you listen.

What day can I come over to help, run an errand, or bring a meal?

Instead of putting the responsibility on the grieving person to ask for help, this question lets them know you are ready and available to help. Be prepared to compare schedules and have some openings in your calendar.

I dont understand why you lost your loved one. I am praying for you and asking God to bring you comfort and peace.

The reality is that we could never know why their loved one died, and it can be helpful for them to hear you acknowledge that truth. This statement also encourages them to lean on God for comfort and reminds them that God is there for them, too.

Take your time. I am here.

How can I pray for you today?
