How To Study The Bible Daily

Read Each Verse In Multiple Translations

How to Study the Bible: Your Daily Bread | Pastor Ivor Myers

Another exercise that can be extremely helpful as youre learning how to study the Bible for beginners is studying the Word in multiple translations.

Remember: The original Bible texts werent written in English. The English versions we read today are just translations, and not every translation always gets it right. Even something as simple as switching a and the can make a huge difference in meaning.

While most of these differences dont change the meaning enough to be noticeable during daily Bible reading, they can make a huge difference when youre trying to study a concept and form a doctrinal belief.

Therefore, youll want to look over at least a few different translations to make sure that the one youre reading fits in line with what Bible scholars as a whole think it means.

Thankfully, you dont need a whole stack of Bibles of various translations in order to compare. You can do this incredibly easily right on Bible Hub. Simply search for the verse youre researching, and scroll down.

This is a fantastic resource for anyone learning how to study the Bible for beginners. And I still use it all the time to help me better know how to understand the Bible. I love how easy it makes to compare multiple translations all in one place with just a few clicks of the keyboard.

The Bible Contains The Story Of Our Savior

Of course, as humans we cannot live good enough lives on our own to achieve Gods holy standards in the Ten Commandments or the Golden Rule. That comes through our faith in Jesus Christ and His Spirit living in us. The Bible is our source for understanding this truth.

One of the most convincing arguments for the authority and accuracy of Scripture is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies in the life of Jesus. Like a golden thread running from Genesis to Malachi, we find more than three hundred references to the Messiah. They are all fulfilled in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Abraham Lincoln said, I believe the Bible is the best gift God has given to man. All the good Savior gave to the world was communicated through this Book. How true! The more we study the Bible, the better we will understand who Jesus is and what He has done for us. How thrilling to open its pages and find the love of God so clearly demonstrated through the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Find Ways To Make Daily Bible Reading Fun

Im guessing you dont have to find ways to motivate yourself to sleep in, eat chocolate cake, watch TV, scroll social media, or visit your favorite websites for Christian Women, blogs for Christian women, Christian Youtube Channels, and Christian podcasts. After all, these things are fun and enjoyable!

So why not find easy ways to make learning how to read the Bible daily more fun or and meaningful as well? I have an entire chapter in my book, Fall in Love with Gods Word: Practical Strategies for Busy Women full of ways to do this.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Choose an easier translation
  • Listen to an audio Bible while shopping
  • Read the Bible with friends
  • Read the Bible alongside a great daily Bible study or devotional
  • Go to a coffee shop and order your favorite snack and hot beverage

Sure, you can try to rely on willpower and force yourself to learn how to start reading the Bible daily, but if you dont enjoy your time in Gods Word, you arent likely to stick with it. Instead, look for ways to make reading the Scriptures daily fun and enjoyable!

Why Choose To Study The Bible By Topic

How to Have a Daily Quiet Time with God

Its really important to know that the things we believe about God is actually rooted in scripture. Its too easy to run with an idea because youve heard it before or because its popular in Christian culture. But, just because its popular doesnt mean its Biblical. Instead of only learning about key Biblical themes from secondhand sources, you can go straight to the Bible with a topical study. Dig deeper and discover what God really has to say. Topical Bible Studies not only give you great clarity, they also help you to form a strong Biblical foundation for the things you believe.

Tips For Studying The Bible Effectively

The Bible is a big book. It can be intimidating to read, so many of us prefer reading books about the Bible. And if we do read the Bible, we can sometimes treat it like a mere instruction manual. We use it if needed, but otherwise we try to do things ourselves. It reminds me of trying to put together IKEA furniture without a manual. Unfortunately, as many of us have experienced, the instruction manual needs to be respected and read properly. Otherwise, our furniture may look disjointed in the end. Things are similar with the Bible. Failing to read it properly can lead to all kinds of trouble.

As we know of course, the Bible is much grander than any IKEA instruction manual. Its a book with heights and depths, poetry and prose. Reading it requires even more purposefulness than reading other books. As Ive read the Bible over the course of my life, here are a few things Ive learned that have helped in my understanding it.

Believe. Its important to remember that understanding the Bible requires faith. We have to believe it. Augustine challenged us, Believe so that you may understand. Augustine said those words because he himself never properly understood the Bible until he believed. The Bible is much like polarized lenses that fishermen use. Without polarized lenses, the water has an intense glare. But with polarized lenses, one can see into the water. The Bible requires faith for us to see its depths.

Benefits Of Bible Study

If your members are looking for reasons to read the Bible daily, here are three:

It cleanses the soul

Spending time in Godâs Word helps us detox from the things that foster a sense of hopelessness in our lives. God uses His Word to wash our minds, emotions, and will, so that we can think clearly and find freedom from enslaving habits.

It stretches our thinking

A good, basic understanding of Scripture provides encouragement to explore unfamiliar and seemingly difficult passages. Although challenging at first, it can lead to new perspectives that improve and empower our lives.

It leads us to the truth

âThe Bible contains the entire truth necessary for living a righteous life. Like a flashlight on a dark road, its teachings keep us on track through the journey of life.

Bible Study By Paragraphs

A paragraph is several sentences of thought in writing. When an author changes the subject of emphasis in writing, he usually begins a new paragraph. The beginning of a paragraph in this Bible is indicated by a boldface verse number. Studying the Bible by paragraphs like this is often called analytic Bible study.

Read the paragraph carefully for its main thought or subject.

What It Says The Precise Accuracy Of The Word

How to study the Bible/scripture in your quiet time daily devotional

In 1804, a British ship, HMS Apollo, was leading a convoy of sixty-nine other merchant vessels to the West Indies on a route that put them parallel to the coasts of Spain and Portugal, about a hundred miles from land. A storm arose on Sunday, April 1, April Fools Day, but the captain was unconcerned because his compass assured him he was well into open sea. But in the wee hours of the morning, the ship wrecked against the jagged rocks of the coastline. Jolted from their hammocks, the crew ran scantily clothed to their posts and tried to save the ship from the cold sea. The waves crashed over the hull, flooding the ship from above amid the screams of ship-men still below. As night gave way to dawn, the surviving crew were amazed to find themselves not a hundred miles from land but wrecked against the Portuguese coast, which was littered with the debris of many of the other ships in their convoy. Of the sixty-nine vessels traveling with HMS Apollo, forty were wrecked, some with total loss of life. It was one of the greatest disasters in the history of British maritime shipping.

Many people today are shipwrecked in life because of a defective compass, and they lead others astray. As Christians, we have a Book that gives accurate readings and precise directions, that allows us to navigate life with confidence, and that always points us in the right way. We can trust it, and we can trust what it says.

What To Expect From Bible Study

Many new believers start studying the Bible with this belief that they will have an awe-inspiring and deep connection with God every time they open their Bible.

Those moments are awesome when they occur. But, every Bible study session will not end in some life-altering, awe-inspiring session with God.

But even those mundane sessions are a chance for you to grow in your faith and your walk as a Christian.

A Few Other Things You Should Know

I study one book at a time, instead of skipping around. This helps me to fully grasp the meaning of the book overall and how each chapter relates its message. I am currently studying the New Testament and have been doing so for about a year. I go in the canonical order and finish one book before going to another.

Also, I only study one chapter per day. Going slowly helps me to really take in and absorb the meaning and application of what I am studying.

Pray Over What You Read

Sometimes as were reading the Bible, a particular verse stands out to us. It may comfort us, convict us, or apply exactly to our situation. Other times, a verse may perplex us. Whatever our reaction may be, when were struck by a particular portion we should stop and pray over it. We can thank the Lord or praise Him for the promises we find in His Word. We can also ask Him to show us the meaning of a certain passage or just talk to Him about a verse.

In this way, the Bible can become a book of prayer to us, helping us spend time with our dear Lord Jesus and develop our relationship with Him.

Scripture Frees From Satan

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

And the context is that Jesus is showing the Jewish leaders that, though they think they are not slaves, You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your fathers desires . Satan is your enemy, young Christian. He is a thousand times stronger than you are. So, John writes to the young believers,

I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

This is our only hope for defeating a supernatural enemy. Every time Jesus was tempted by the devil , he struck back with the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God , and he had it memorized, so he didnt have to carry a book in the wilderness.

Find Relevant Verses On The Topic

Once youve chosen a good topic, youll want to look up as many Bible verses on the topic as you can.

This is because, unfortunately, studying the bible for beginners isnt as simple as looking up a topic, flipping to the page, and seeing what the Bible has to say. The Bible is not a step-by-step guide with easy instructions and answers to every situation

Rather, you will want to look up the multiple places the Bible addresses a certain topic so you can read all the verses together in context.

When you do this, youll quickly see that some Scripture verses add additional clarifying information and context to others.

Here are three of the easiest ways to find Scripture verses on a topic when youre first learning how to study the Bible for beginners:

  • Use a Concordance: Concordances list common words found in the Bible along with several places that particular word is found. You probably wont find every word/topic listed here , but if you choose a common one, you can find a TON of verses very quickly this way. Many study Bibles have these in the back.
  • Consult Your Bibles Index of Subjects: Additionally, Study Bibles have study notes in the margins that explain difficult concepts in greater detail. If your Bible has an Index to Subjects in the back, you can find lots of great notes this way.

Studying the Bible will give you a better understanding of how you should live as a Christian.

As a disciple of Christ, you are to live according to his teachings. This proves to the world that you are one of his disciples.

As you study the word of God, you will get a deeper understanding of who Jesus is and how you should live as his disciple.
