To Be Inspired To Grow In Christlikeness And Integrity

These days, we often look for charisma and competency when we look for leaders. But the biblical focus is on Christlikeness and character and the ability to guard the truths of the gospel. Great theological colleges focus heavily on the formation of genuine Christian character. Our aim is to grow Christian leaders with character and integrity, whose lives honour Jesus and the gospel. Our hope is to release a generation of disciples and leaders who live a life worthy of Gods call. These are completely humble and gentle. They have priorities shaped by the mind of Christ. They embrace ethical standards and personal integrity in obedience to Scripture. They show conduct that is consistent with Christian teaching and values. They embrace sexual purity, especially, but not only, in relationships in ministry. They willingly observe ministerial values and professional ethics. They maintain the unity of the church and show the fruit of the Spirit.

In the Appendix at the end of this blog, I offer a list of qualities of character and spiritual life that theological colleges strive for. We do this as we help students grow and mature in Christ, and as we prepare them to lead Christian communities with integrity.

How Christian Academia Dramatically Changed My Faith

Yeah, college is awesome, let me tell you.

Even the private Christian ones.

Some of the best memories are made in college. I havent even been out of college for a whole year and I already miss so much about it.

Some of the best, lifelong friends are made in college. My closest friends used to live walking distance from me and now I have to take a plane to go see them, but theyre still my best friends.

A lot of people even find love in college . Lucky for me, I met the love of my life in high school, but I digress.

Anybody can tell you these things about a Christian college, or any college. What they cant tell you, however, is what youll experience. Aside from the obvious factors , everyones college experience is different . Another factor that affects how you perceive your college experience is who you are before going to college.

I was a Jesus-following, apologetics-loving, Bible-believing Christian when I got to college.

But Im not that way, anymore. Sort of.

I have been attending church throughout my entire life. My mother would drag me there every Sunday whether I wanted to or not, which most times I didnt want to. Im a proud introvert, but it has made making friends quite difficult throughout the years, which is why I mostly blame myself for not liking church growing up because I didnt make many friends in Sunday school. Instead, I just sat in the pews of big church and waited for the preacher to finish his sermon I couldnt comprehend.

How to Study the Bible

Six months after the first students moved into Finkenwalde, the Nazis made seminaries like Finkenwalde illegal and their qualifications invalid. Members of the Confessing Church soon faced arrest and imprisonment, and Finkenwalde was closed by the Gestapo in 1937. Students at Finkenwalde were not preparing to settle into comfortable ministry positions. Bonhoeffer trained his students in the midst of enemies to resist the growing nationalism, racism, and suppression of freedom that was spreading through Germany in the 1930s.

Karl Barth, another theologian of the Confessing Church, encouraged his students to read the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other. We must not see our time as students as a three year vacation in an artificial theological community , but must learn to apply what we learn and stand against evil as we seek to further Gods kingdom.

Whether you are a new or returning student, I pray that you may walk closely with God this year, taking each step as a faithful disciple on the journey.

Whats The Difference Between Bible College And Seminary

God called you into ministry. You need preparation to follow that call. For some, that preparation requires biblical and theological preparation. For others, preparation involves leadership skills. Is Bible study alone sufficient? Do you need more? Whats the difference between Bible college and seminary? What should you look for in your preparation to serve God faithfully?

How To Start Bible Study: What To Expect From Bible Reading

I heard this great anecdote from a video a few months ago. We often come to the Bible hoping or even expecting to get that amazing, awe-inspiring feeling of connection with God. But that moment is like going out to your favorite restaurant on your birthday its exciting, memorable, and you look forward to it all year. By comparison, most of the time, our everyday meals are simple, unmemorable, or even boring. Our everyday meals may not stand out, but our bodies notice if we skipped them.

By the same vein, we may not have an incredible moment of connection with God every time that we open our Bibles. But we still benefit from the everyday moments of Bible study that may feel less memorable. Every time you open your Bible, youre opening yourself up to a deeper connection with God. Youre nourishing your mind and soul. Youre strengthening your faith, even if it doesnt feel like it. Just because you dont feel much, dont give up.

To Be Built Up And Released In Your Gifts

Bible Teaching Certificate Freedom Bible College & Seminary

God has given you gifts and abilities to enrich the church. These gifts might include serving, teaching, leading, giving, exhortation, or a range of other things. Theological colleges cant give you gifts. But they can help you discover your God-given gifts and enhance and grow them. Theological college is a great place to grow a deeper sense of calling, and to enhance the gifts God has given you.

What To Expect From Bible Courses In College

If you choose to attend a private Christian university like Azusa Pacific, you will likely be required to take Bible courses intended to give you a foundation of knowledge on scriptural principles. You might not know what to expect from these classes, or you may think they are just another general education requirement you need to check off your list before you can graduate. Instead of seeing Bible courses as mere obligations, it helps to consider the knowledge youll glean and growth youll experience during these classes. For me, studying the Bible broadened my horizons and grew my faith in ways I never expected.

Is Bible Study Alone Sufficient

Many believers have the idea that all they need is Bible study. Besides, the Holy Spirit will give me everything I need to do the work of ministry. Right? Yes and no. It is true that the Holy Spirit will lead and guide you in ministry. But, that truth does not mean you should not prepare! Indeed, the Holy Spirit can do a whole lot more through you if there is something to work with!!!

Everyone God calls into ministry should be involved in regular Bible study. This fact is a given. But a question must be asked: How do I properly study the Bible? This is where a Bible college or seminary plays an important role.

Note Big Theological Concepts

Do you know your Bible study learning style?

I also note big ideas that stand out to me theologically.

For example, many Jewish people walked around Samaria because of their disdain for Samaritans, so when the Bible says that Jesus had to walk through Samaria, it doesnt mean geographically maybe its because he knew he had to meet the Samaritan woman to give her this new beginning.

So what that teaches me is that God will out of His way, into the darkest places, to meet people and offer them rebirth.

Reason Number : You Are Called To Vocational Ministry

If God has called you to devote your life to ministry either in a paid or unpaid position, then learning and growing what that means is vital. Not all vocational ministers will have full-time or even part-time positions. But what makes a vocational ministry is a specific calling to lead others in ministry and help others discover their gifts and talents. People called to vocational ministry will continue to serve or be drawn to minister throughout their entire lives, unable to stop leading in the area to which they are called. One of the ways we discover whether or not we are called to this type of ministry is studying with others and allowing mentors, teachers, and ministers to invest in our lives and help to guide us in the direction to which God has called us.

As the saying goes, God does not call the equipped He equips the called. Though God can use us despite our lack of education and training, we should assume that He wants to keep us uneducated and untrained. Every leader in the Bible had some type of training and development that helped to prepare them for the ministry to which they were called

Appendix: Spiritual And Personal Qualities That Theological Colleges Strive To Instil In You

Here are some qualities of character and spiritual life described in the Bible. These are exemplary rather than exhaustive. Great Bible and theological colleges strive to help you grow and mature in these areas, as they work with local churches to prepare and support you to lead and serve:

  • Poor in spirit. Willing to mourn or be persecuted for righteousness sake. Merciful, meek, and pure of heart. Peacemakers, who hunger and thirst after righteousness.
  • Seeking first the kingdom and Gods righteousness. Boldly and fearlessly proclaiming the Gospel.
  • Demonstrating the characteristics and qualities of a servant.
  • Serving the Lord with humility. Faithful proclamation of the Gospel. Obedience to Gods leading. Considering ones life worth nothing save obedience to Christ.
  • Keeping watch over oneself and the flock as faithful shepherds.
  • Offering ones body as a living sacrifice. Being transformed by the renewing of the mind. Using ones gifts enthusiastically. Never lacking in zeal. Keeping ones spiritual fervour, serving the Lord.
  • Honouring all members of the Body of Christ and their unique spiritual gifts . Demonstrating the qualities of love described in 1 Corinthians 13.
  • Setting forth the truth plainly. Preaching the Lord Jesus Christ. Persevering under trials. Fixing ones eyes on what is unseen and eternal.
  • Living by faith not by sight. Making it ones goal to please the Lord in view of his return.
  • Living by the Spirit rather than gratifying the desires of the sinful nature.

Why Is Attending A Bible College Is Important

    Christ Temple Baptist Church

Its been said that the foundation is key to everything. Consider a house. If the foundation is strong, the house is strong. But a weak foundation leads issues all throughout the house. Attending Bible college is like building a firm foundation.

You could take general education courses at the local community college. Or, you can take them from a Christian leader with a biblical worldview. Sure, grammar is grammar. But the instructor makes a difference. Surely you know that the Bible is important enough to be studied from those who have dedicated their lives to it. The faculty at a Bible college are doing that very thing.

At Carolina College of Biblical Studies, our mission is to disciple Christ-followers, through biblical higher education, for a lifetime of effective servant leadership. If we can help you reach your ministry goals, let us know.

To Be Motivated To Be A Lifelong Learner

In The Making of a Leader, Robert Clinton writes: One of the striking characteristics seen in effective leaders is their desire to learn. They learn from all kinds of sources. They learn from Scripture. They are pressed by their situation to see new truth in the Scriptures and in the situations themselves. They learn about their own uniqueness. They build on the natural abilities they have. They acquire the skills needed by the challenges of the situations they face. They learn to use their spiritual gifts. Effective leaders, at all levels of leadership, maintain a learning posture throughout life .

One of the goals of theological education is to inspire and motivate you to become a lifelong learner. Read more books. Discover new ideas. Go to seminars and conferences. Enrol in courses. Learn from experiences. Listen to family and congregations and the voice of God. Be a lifelong learner who seek to continually grow and learn.
