What Does The Bible Say About Edifying Each Other

Oct 14th, 2012 / Salt and Light

We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.

I recall my early Bible college days when many of us had achieved the sophistication of sophomoric wisdom and had learned just enough to be dangerous to ourselves. We had learned that Christians were to edify. Being true to the exuberant nature of untested adulthood, we learned to artfully criticize each others regular failures to verbally encourage each other. After an offending word of belittling would slip out of the mouth of one of our peers, a well timed, tongue-in-cheek challenge from another quarter called out, Edify, you jerk!all in the name of good-natured fun. While the admonition to edify was appropriate, certainly the method defeated the purpose and lacked a certain finesse.

To edify is to build up. The word sounds ponderous in that it is related to the word edificean imposing structure built to impress and to last. The Greek word is oikodome. It is a compound word of home and to build. It is found when our Lord speaks of the builders in the Gospels . Anyone who has built a house knows what planning goes into building a home. From reviewing blueprints to picking outlet locations, the home takes shape according to the wish of the owner. The builder puts forth his best effort until the homeowner is satisfied.

The Motivation Of The Believer In Edification

There are two categories of motivation: positive volition and humility

Positive volition is expressed in Rom. 14:19. Consequently, we run after those things related to prosperity and edification.

Running, not walking, expresses positive volition toward the doctrines of the church age, which gives us all the details regarding Gods plan, purpose, and will for our lives after salvation.

This includes the learning, understanding, and application of the mystery doctrine of the church age as the means of executing the plan of God.

Prosperity and edification go together both are the result of continual positive volition.

In order for consistent perception of doctrine to occur, it is important to have a mental attitude of humility.

Rom. 12:2-5, And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,

so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Many members in one body emphasizes that although we have different spiritual gifts and different personalities, we all belong to one family, the body of Christ.

    Building Up One Another

    Pin on Christian Life

The world does a good enough job in tearing us down or beating us down. This heavy laden, sin-soaked world can press down upon us until we feel weve been beaten all the way down to the ground but this should not be so with Christians. Even though were in the world, were not of the world but the world still pummels us and tries to wear on us. The Apostle Paul writes to the church to encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing and as Jude writes, you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit. Paul writes to the Corinthians, It is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ, and all for your upbuilding, beloved. Heres what building up one another looks like, Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear . We ought to never be tearing down one another but always be building up one another.

Where Is Speaking In Tongues In The Bible

Bible Gateway 1 Corinthians 14 :: NIV. Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. … He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

The Importance Of The Pastors Teaching In Edification

The responsibility of the pastor in edification is found in a number of passages.

2 Cor. 10:8, For even if I should boast somewhat further about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I shall not be put to shame,

The Corinthians wavered so much that Paul really had to get tough with them and throw his rank around.

The Corinthians were reacting to Pauls authority and so were doing many things detrimental to their spiritual life.

Our authority refers to those with the communication gifts of pastor teacher as well as apostleship, e.g., Apollos and Timothy. The pastor establishes his authority through the communication of doctrine.

Paul makes it clear that edification depends upon accepting the authority of a pastor teacher who communicates doctrinal information.

2 Cor. 13:10, For this reason, I am writing these things while absent, in order that when I am present, I may not use severity in compatibility with the authority which God has given to me for the purpose of your edification, and not for the purpose of destroying you.

No one can learn any subject without accepting the authority of the one who teaches.

Therefore, the importance of understanding that edification comes through the teaching of a pastor in communicating the mystery doctrine of the church age.

The road to edification is paved with hundreds and thousands of lessons regarding the plan of God.

    The Nature Of Biblical Edification

    Bible Edification

First Thessalonians 5:11 says, Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. What does it mean to be edified? Without doing a scientific survey, my guess is that most people would say that being edified means to be encouraged, to make to feel better, or to have a more positive attitude. So, I did some searching on the Internet to see if my guess was accurate or not. I found that the majority of the time, the word is used in the sense of encourage or be made to feel better. However, when I looked into an English dictionary, I found the following definition. Edify: enlighten, to improve the morals or knowledge of somebody. Another dictionary said this. Edify: to instruct or improve spiritually. Does this surprise you? Do you think of being instructed as edification? Do you think of gaining new knowledge when you are edified?

    Are you up for it?

How The Church Is To Edify

How can a congregation work to edify its members? Romans 15:1-7 shows that edification is something that is done by each member, working together in one church. This is very connected with what we talked about under unity we dont do what we want, we do what our brethren want when we see that it will edify them. The end result of that edification is unity and glorifying God. 1 Corinthians 8:1 tells us that it takes love to edify. We have to focus on other people, not ourselves.

Especially in the context of the local church, speaking the words of God edifies the whole church . In verse 12, Paul encourages the Corinthians to seek to abound in spiritual gifts for the edification of the church. What did spiritual gifts do? They revealed and confirmed the word of God. Today, that word has been revealed and confirmed, but not all of it to everyone some Christians know a lot more about the Bible than others. We need to continue revealing the word and building each others faith in that word. That means that you should study with people about the evidence for the Bible being the word of God in addition to studying the word itself .

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

What Does It Mean To Edify

Simply defined for our purposes, edification is the building up of the body of Christ. It is clear that edification is a work that Christ demands from His church as a whole.

Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that all of us possess knowledge. This knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

In the first case, Paul is talking to individual Christians about eating meat which makes it clear that this is outside of the context of the local church. In the second case it is also clearly talking about the work of the universal church through individual Christians. It is each Christians responsibility to build up his brethren by how he lives his life and in his teaching.
