What Is The Meaning Of Glory To God In The Highest In The Bible

Glory to God in the highest is located in the Gospel of Luke. From Pauls writings, we know that Luke was a physician and a gentile. The method in which he wrote his gospel account reflects the observant and detailed recording of the events he witnessed.

Through Lukes account of the night of Christs birth, we hear a heavenly choir of angels singing Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. The army of angels sang to shepherds on the night watch. The audience God chose is significant, and a detail Luke undoubtedly held close to his Gentile heart. Night-watch shepherds were the most undesirable class of people, and the perfectly represented what Jesus came to accomplish. Here, a heavenly choir of angels, singing to lowly, underserving shepherds.

The NIV Study Bible notes the ruler Augustus trying to convince the people he had established peace through propaganda. Though he had conquered immediate neighbors that harbored a threat, there were still enemies to fear. However, no political ploy or human strength could usher in peace but God, Himself. And He does so through Jesus. A few verses back , Luke records the prose that prefaced the angels song: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you he is Messiah, the Lord. The Moody Bible Commentary explains the triple title given to Jesus, Savior-Christ-Lord, highlight His mission, His royalty, and His authority.

Examples Of Shekinah Glory In The New Testament

The divine presence of God is also found in the New Testament:

  • An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
  • And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lords glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
  • And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Look! Gods dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.

Glory As An Attribute

The most common use of the word “glory” in the Bible is to describe the splendor, holiness and majesty of God. Glory, in this sense, is often associated with a person experiencing God’s presence in a tangible way. When used this way, the word glory conveys a sense of heavy dignity. One example of this is recorded in 2 Chronicles 5. According to the biblical account, God’s glory filled the newly constructed temple. This was experienced tangibly by those around, who saw a cloud fill the temple. This cloud, which signified God’s glory and presence, temporarily prevented the priests from conducting their duties.

Gods Glory Indicates His Presence

What does it mean in the bible: " Did I not tell you that ...

Glory is a characteristic of God seen in both the Old and New Testament descriptions of God and his presence.

In Exodus 33:22, the glory of the Lord indicated his presence as to Moses, and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

The visible presence of Gods glory was seen in a cloud during the Exodus, and in Solomons Temple after the Ark of the Covenant was put in it.

The glory of the LORD dwelt on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day, he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud .

The glory of the Lord appeared to all the people during the time of the Tabernacle.

Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle .

The Book of John connects Gods presence in giving the Law and the indwelling of the presence of God in the Tabernacle to Jesus dwelling with humanity by calling Jesus the Word.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth .

After the temple was built, the presence and glory of the Lord were seen in a cloud.

And when the priests came out of the Holy Place, a cloud filled the house of the LORD, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD .

Breaking Down The Key Parts Of Romans : 23

#1 ForPauls point is that there is no one who can be saved without Gods work on their behalf. He said in Romans 3:22 that there is no difference in this regard between Jews and Greeks. Both have the same problem and require the same solution, Christs atoning work on the cross.

#2 all have sinned and fall short1 John 1:8 says, If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Earlier in Romans 3:10, Paul says, There is no one righteous, not even one. The wages of sin is death . God promised Adam that as soon as he disobeyed God by eating from the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he would surely die. Adams rebellion brought sin into the world so that everyone is born into sin, therefore, all sin and fall short of Gods standard for us.

#3 of the glory of God.Gods standard is His own perfection. His own glory. His glory is paramount in his plans and thoughts. God does everything ultimately for His own glory , and this is good because it includes saving men and women for his own glory. If this is offensive it is because we forget that God is not a fallen man, like one of us, but rather, he is the most glorious being in the universe. It would be inconsistent with the truth and with his nature for him to want the most glory to go to something else besides himself.

The fear of God will keep you away from all forms of sin because you will know that God doesnt like them.

Ecclesiastes 12:13The end of the matter all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

You are to make fearing God your highest priority, all the days of your life.

You do not have any other duty to perform more than this.

Also know that what will actually prove outwardly that you fear God is that, you will keep his commandments.

Christians Use Glory As A Synonym For Heaven

Many of Jesus’ followers hoped that Jesus would reign as an earthly king. James and John asked Jesus if they could sit with him as rulers in glory because they believed he would overthrow the Roman government.

And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory .

Later, Jesus clarified that his reign would be in heaven surrounded by angels.

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne .

What Does Glory Mean

The word glory comes from the Latin word gloria which means fame or renown. In a secular sense when people speak of glory the term can have two meanings. In one instance, it is the bestowing or showering of high honor or praise on a person, usually for some achievement. For example, if you do well in school you may be put on the honor roll or the deans list, these are types of glory.

Looking through another lens, glory can also be used to signify magnificence or awesome splendor. This can be applied when something of value is restored, we might say the ship has been restored to her former glory.

In a biblical context, the definitions dont change much. One of the things the Bible does highlight is the struggle in the heart of men when it comes to seeking glory. There are many warnings about the dangers of seeking glory and the praises of others. Here are two:

Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets .

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven .

With these definitions in mind how do we apply this to our question what is the Glory of God?

A Hard Question To Answer

We began with what really is a loaded question: what is the glory of God? It is not loaded because it is a trick question, it is loaded because it has so many answers. How do you take the one who is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, eternal, holy, glorious, and try to wrap all that glory into an answer? It is hard to do.

I hope you see that Gods glory goes far beyond even our human comprehension. I fully believe it will take eternity to fully understand and experience the wonder of Gods glory. My final thought is to point you to heaven and our eternal home. Here is a glimpse of the reality of the glory of God.

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp .

May we live lives that truly honor him and bring the glory to his name that it so richly deserves.

What Does It Mean To Fear God:

What does it mean to fear God, and why must we do it?

The following are the most important reasons why we must give God-fearing the highest priority.

He is our maker

God created us, together with all other things in the universe. Genesis 1:26-28.

We did not have any input in this, neither did we tell him how we want to be created.

He just decided on his own that he wanted some special creatures made in his image, and after His likeness.

Should we not fear such a being who can singlehandedly create other beings, and put them in a well-ordered world like ours.

You just need to take a good look at your body, for you to know what investment s God has committed there.

The whole systems in our body are working together in perfect harmony and awe-inspiring manner.

If he can make us fearfully and wonderfully , think of how he is like in his real self.

That will be too much for us to even imagine. A great and mighty one indeed, who must be feared.

He has all power

God is the Almighty. That is the one that has all the might.

He has no equal, and there is nothing that he cannot do.

Many things are impossible for men, but with God nothing is impossible.

When he was creating the world, the bible recorded that he called what he created into existence as if they have been existing before. Romans 4:17.

He is great indeed!

Usually, we fear criminal-minded people, and dangerous animals, because they can kill.

Shouldnt we fear the one that controls the whole of the universe?

It is a command

What Does It Mean To Have God’s Glory Upon You

To think about the glory of God upon you I want you to focus on the Holy Spirit within you. The amazing thing about what God did when he saved you is he deposited the Spirit of God in your heart. I dont know if we often get this all the time, but God himself in the person of the Holy Spirit dwells within your heart. This means Gods strength, Gods wisdom, Gods love, Gods peace, Gods joy all dwell within you. As you deepen your walk with God and yield more to the Holy Spirit, then you will experience more of Gods glory flowing in your life.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lords glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit .
