What Does The Bible Say About Anxiety?

Below Ive listed the calming bible verses for worry, stress and anxiety. Ive also included a free printable version of these verses. Heres how you can keep these verses front and center in your day-to-day life:

  • Print the verses out and put them where you can see them every day. Especially when you first wake up and before you go to bed, to sort of bookend your day with Gods truth. Perhaps, tape them to your bathroom mirror, set them on your nightstand, or put them on the fridge.
  • Another way to use the reading plan below and customize it for you, is to grab some cue cards, or cut up paper, and write the verses down, one at a time.
  • Also, read them out loud when you see them each day.;
  • And finally, memorize the verses you love most.;

By reading them, writing them, speaking them and memorizing them, they will become more ingrained in your brain and will sink deep for easy recall when you again feel pressure or worry.;

Anxiety In The New Testament

In the New Testament, Jesus talks about faith versus anxiety. Matthew 6:26 says, Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifespan? He continues saying in verse 28, And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: They do not labor or spin. Hes telling His followers that Hes got it covered, and if they have any doubt, they need only notice the carefree attitude plants have.;

He teaches us to look and learn from them, for how much more will He care for us when He cares so much for the lilies of the field? Its a reassurance that He cares about our anxieties, that they are not greater than He.

And in the book of Philippians, it tells us to be anxious for nothing but in all things give thanks for this is the will of Christ Jesus . Paul couldnt have stated it clearer, in other words: Heres my will for my church to always be thankful. And heres what I dont want for them to be anxious. So, if we believe the dictionarys definition of sin is a state of nature in which the self is apart from God, then anxiety is a sin.;

However, as stated above, it is a subtle habit of the mind, one that is not always an active choice, or a choice at all, but a reality, nonetheless, that entered the world once humanity fell .

Be Aware Of Whats Happening Around You

Watch out! Dont let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Dont let that day catch you unaware, like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.

Luke 21:34-36 NLT

Understanding the times we live in is key to keeping anxiety to a minimum. When we are spiritually ignorant , its stressful because we are constantly getting taken advantage of by the traps laid out for us by the world.;

This passage lays out two categories of heart-dulling activities: carousing and drunkenness, and worries of this life. We stay alert by examining ourselves daily to identify how we may be dulling ourselves, and what matters of the heart we are neglecting to address.;

The best example I can think of to illustrate this point is when I was in college, and I saw countless friends get their stomachs pumped or be resuscitated because they drank too much alcohol. In those moments, I was able to comprehend that there was a lot going on in these peoples lives, and it put things into perspective because they were all going to the wrong places to find relief.

Bible Verses About Caring What Others Think

What does the Bible say about worry?

I do not believe there is any way to fully stop caring what others think. We can become bold, we can do the will of God, we can become more confident, more extroverted, etc.

Although we can compress it and we can significantly become better in this area I believe that we were all affected by the fall. There is a psychological battle within us that we all have to deal with.

I know that some people struggle with this more than others, but never are we left to deal with this on our own. We must look to the Lord for help in our time of need.

Gods grace is sufficient for any problem that you may face because of this. Caring what other people think can cause you to make a terrible impression on others. Instead of being genuine and expressing who you are you put on a facade.

You change the way you do things and you try to impress instead. Your mind is going in so many different directions that it can cause you to just stall in anxiety. This is a huge topic that can go in so many different directions. Sometimes to get better with this all we need is confidence in the Lord, more experience, and practice.

For example, if you have to make a public speech and you are afraid of what others may think know that with experience you become better at it. Practice with a group of family members and above all cry out to the Lord for help.

Quotes

Caring what others think really hurts your confidence.;

2. Psalm 118:8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD Than to trust in man.

What Jesus Said About Worry

Jesus has plenty to say about worrying, so I will share some of his thoughts, followed by my comments.

Therefore I tell you, do not worry;about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Matthew 6:25

You have life, so dont waste your mental energy on peripheral issues such as food and clothing.

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Matthew 6:27

Worry accomplishes absolutely nothing, so dont do it.

But seek first his kingdom;and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Instead of wasting your time with worry, do something practical and effective: Seek the Kingdom of God and righteous living.; When you get your priorities straight, God promises to give you everything you need.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34

We are prone to wearing ourselves out worrying about stuff that hasnt happened yet and may never happen.; Reality is that the things we dread and fear are seldom as bad as we imagine they will be.

Bottom line: If you deal with problems as they come along without allowing your imagination to run rampant on what may happen, you will always have the ability to cope.

Sure. ;The Bible is very practical, so lets dig a bit more.

Proverbs 12:25;

Anxiety weighs down the heart

Of all the Bible verses about worry, this one sums up the impact of it the best. Worry simply weighs down your heart. Its a burden to carry.

If youve ever gone hiking and had to carry a heavy backpack, you know how burdensome it feels. You also know the feeling of relief when you reach the campsite and are able to set it down for the night. Thats what we should do with worry. Let it go and relief will come to your heart.

Matthew 10:19-20

But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.;At that time, you will be given what to say,;for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Jesus spoke here to his disciples about times when they would be challenged and put on trial for their beliefs. But the passage speaks to something we all worry about saying the wrong thing.

Jesus promised his followers that the Spirit would give them the right things to say at the right time. Thats very encouraging news. When we quiet our hearts and listen to the Spirit, the right words will come. It shouldnt be something we worry about.

Luke 12:25

Which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

John 14:27

Do not let your hearts be troubled;and do not be afraid.

There is no doubt about it. When we worry our hearts become troubled. This can lead to sleepless nights, distracted days and even worse fears. Fear is a major outcome of worry.

What Does The Bible Say About Worry And Anxiety

Christian author William R. Inge defined worry as “interest paid on trouble before it becomes due.” Worry is the great plague of life, both for believers and unbelievers. It crosses all educational and economic and racial boundaries. It is human to worry, to fret, to fear something in the future.

Worry may be normal, but it also sinful. “Sinful?” you say. Definitely. The Bible is brimming over with promises to God’s people that we need not worry, for God — not we ourselves — are in control of the universe.

Happy are those who fear the LORD . Yes, happy are those who delight in doing what he commands.

When darkness overtakes the godly, light will come bursting in. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. All goes well for those who are generous, who lend freely and conduct their business fairly. Such people will not be overcome by evil circumstances. Those who are righteous will be long remembered. They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the LORD to care for them. They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly.

Psalm 112:1-8

Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

Psalm 55:22

As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands.

Psalm 119:143

Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.

Proverbs 12:25

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

Matthew 6:25-34
