  • When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. Psalm 94:19
  • Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Romans 8:26-28

  • Help For Christian Burnout

Feelings of worry and stress are common for everyone. However, it can be tough for Christians if we think it is unspiritual or it may ruin our witness. Christians have a tendency to ignore our anxiety instead of facing it with Gods help.

Pastor burnout statistics show that 90% of pastors are frequently fatigued or worn out on a weekly or even a daily basis and 71% constantly fight depression . Pastor depression and burnout is indicative of a greater Christian problem, because if our spiritual leaders dont know how to find peace, what hope do we have?

I have created a book and online course to help caregivers maintain their motivation in giving to others. This material will be an excellent help for pastors and other Christians, who are often giving of themselves for the sake of others. The study will look into the lives of Abraham, David, Paul, Elijah, and many of Bible stories to find help to overcome anxiety and stress. The study is called, The Academy of Powerful Caregivers.

What The Bible Says About Fear And Anxiety

God understands what fear and anxiety does to us, but he has so much more that he wants for us. Thats why he tells us over 100 times in the Bible do not fear or do not be anxious. Just as God knows what anxiety does to us, we have an enemy who studies our weaknesses and seeks to use them against us. Fear and anxiety are tools of the enemy. The Bible tells us that we live in a world where we will have trouble, and lets face it, theres plenty of trouble in the world right now. But the great news is that God has overcome the world. Faith is the ultimate weapon that we are given as Christians. We need to arm ourself with the promises in Gods word to combat anxiety.

In addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. | Ephesians 6:16

How To Overcome Worry With The Bible

    1. Pray. Spend some time talking to your Heavenly Father. Tell Him your heartache. Tell him what you’re worried about. I promise you that He has good in this for you, and it’s okay to ask Him what that good is.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

    Romans 8:28

I have prayed and prayed and prayed. I sent an email to the prayer team at my church. I went up to the altar during our service and women laid hands on me and prayed more.

Don’t worry about anything instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

    Philippians 4:6

    2. Believe in God’s plan. Our God is a miracle worker. He can part waters, move boulders, heal the dead , save, destroy, bless, and curse. He can do anything, everything, things beyond our comprehension.

And He has you in the palm of His hand.

So that’s it. It’s a lack of faith. If we believe in God’s plan and provision, we have no worry.

I have often meditated on these verses over the years as I’ve worried about our finances. Are we putting enough money into savings? Are we paying enough on our credit card debt? Just like now, the thoughts come and I don’t know how to stop them.

My pastor preached a sermon on worry not too long ago. He said that worry is a sin.

Have You Been Feeling Anxious Lately

Almost everyone we know today has experienced some form of anxiety and worry. To be human is to suffer, to some extent.

We worry about relationships, money, what people think think about us and our lifestyle, how our bodies look and our appearance, and of course health.

These problems are not without consequences, with anxiety producing symptoms of emotional disorders, such as depression, lack of sleep and confusion to then even more serious health problems like obesity, heart disease, digestive problems, and autoimmune diseases.

The sad reality is that we as a society are literally worrying ourselves to death. For Christians our insecurities have a way of following us into church. In the famous sermon on the mount, Jesus understanding that this is a human problem for all time, identifies our sources of anxiety and suggests some strategies for coping with worry in our everyday lives.

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Thankfully, we can look the Bible for answers to current issues the topic of anxiety is no different.

Joshua : 9 This Is My Command

In this scripture, God tells us to do something that he mentions 365 times in the bible and that is to fear not. It is not a coincidence that we are told over and over and 300 times over not to fear. Im sure God knew we would need to hear that time and time again because fear will come. This scripture is a reminder when you become afraid and that fear leads to worry and anxiety to do it anyway. To be courageous and strong and to go forth anyway. That is how you overcome fear and anxiety and worry. By moving forward day by day. You beat it by having the thought and feeling the feeling, rationalizing it, and pushing through with Gods word in tow. Being strong and courageous doesnt mean youre never scared, it doesnt mean youre this person who isnt bothered by anything, and it doesnt mean you dont have a tough or bad day. Being strong and courageous and even fearless means despite all of that you dont quit, you keep working toward your goals, you continue to put yourself out there, you keep reminding yourself of Gods word. Take those deep breaths, because taking deep breaths are essential when you deal with anxiety. You do whatever it is that must be done in order for you to be great. And the more and more you do it, the less and less you will be anxious because your life will become an example of God being with you and you can use your past successes as a reminder of how great you really are.

Matthew : 27 Can Your Worries Add A Single Moment To Our Life

What Does The Bible Say About…Fear, Anxiety, and Worry? – Ep. 3: WTBS | Impact Video Ministries

Man, this question can really stop you in your worrying tracks. It is a reminder that worrying solves nothing! Kind of like complaining. This scripture encourages you to ask yourself if what you are doing is contributing to your wellbeing. Thinking about things over and over and over doesnt help situations get better however, rationalizing does. Like this scripture, you should ask yourself questions that will help you rationalize your worrying thoughts. This is something that I constantly help clients do which is to make sense of their thoughts. Often times when it comes to worry and anxiety, they realize that their thoughts dont make much sense and arent true or realistic. Once they realize that, we work on not just getting rid of those worrisome thoughts, but replacing them with what is true and real. So ask yourself, Are my thoughts helping me or hurting me?” Are they adding to my life, or taking from me? Once youve answered that question then you can begin to replace those anxious thoughts with thoughts that will add good things to your life.

Do Not Be Anxious About Anything

Gods Word is clear on this. Our Maker did not create us for anxiety. And Christ did not save us and grant us everlasting life so we could feel nervous our whole lives.

In the Apostle Pauls letter to the church at Philippi he writes:

Rejoice in the Lord always again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in mepractice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Now let us first address what the passage is saying, then I will contend with what it is not saying.

Here Paul says we should pray and ask God for what we need rather than worrying about it. Prayer and thanksgiving, then, is the antidote to anxiety. And in the passage that follows, we are encouraged to think about good things. Focus on the positive.

    How Do We Respond

Mental illness can affect any of us. Whether a pastor, Sunday school teacher, or faithful churchgoer, the suspected struggle of mental illness should not be a source of shame or be kept hidden. The Church should be a place of safety and community, where those who are struggling can be honest, ask people to rally around them in prayer, and be assisted in seeking professional help.

When we encounter people who suffer with mental illness, we should be hesitant to provide our opinion on what the source is or how it should be solved. This issue and human beings are complex. Heath Lambert said it best: Caring for people means being alert to physical problems that require medical treatments and spiritual problems that require Christ and his Word.

Most of us are not mental health experts, so we should stick to what we do know: God is good, loves us, and does not forsake his people. Pray with those who are struggling within your church. Treat them as fellow image-bearers. Encourage them to seek professional and medical help, if need be. Be available. Walk with them, shouldering one anothers burdens in order to fulfill the law of Christ . Only then will we love as Christ loved and care well for those who are hurting.

Make Sure Your Feelings Are Really Yours

Can you really trust your feelings are from you? Are you just repeating the thoughts and beliefs of your parents, an ex-lover, or someone else in your life because they impressed it upon you, or are these thoughts and feelings actually your own? If you come from a Christian worldview, how do you know your true thoughts and feelings are not being manipulated by your enemy Satan, the world, and your own sinful desires?

    Think About Something Else

What Does The Bible Say About Anxiety And Depression? Part 2

In addition to telling God about our needs and anxieties, and giving thanks, it can be really helpful to make a concerted effort to think about something else, other than what is worrying us. So, if worries about your job or relationships are bothering you, think about something else. Again the Apostle Paul has some advice for us, Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things . This bit of advice comes right after the verses above about giving everything over to God in prayer and giving thanks. If youre up at night thinking about this or that, then make a decision to think about something else. Open the Bible or a really good book and read for a while. Write a letter to a friend. Clean your house. Organize the utensils in your kitchen drawer. Think about funny jokes youve heard. If there is anything good and worthwhile that you can occupy your mind with instead of those worrisome thoughts that are keeping you up, then think about those things.
