Word Curses: What The Bible Says About Breaking Curses

Is Cussing a Sin?

Today, we think of cursing as someone using foul language, profanity, or perhaps, even blasphemous words against God. Our definition usually is synonymous with swearing. This is a form of cursing, but it is only a small portion of what curses mean in the Bible. Cursing in the Bible is not only speaking evil of someone, but evil coming upon someone. If a person is under a curse, according to the Bible, evil has come upon them in some way. Sickness, tragedy, or bad circumstances are occurring in their lives.

Please Note: This does not mean that every difficult circumstance that we go through is a curse. Sometimes God leads us through circumstances to stretch our faith. This is for our own good, as it is helping us to grow stronger and identify ourselves with Him. However, He is not bringing anything upon us, but rather leading us through a circumstance so that we might experience His overcoming power. For the duration of this article, we are referring to an evil curse that comes not from the hand of God, but from the enemy.

Whats The Bottom Line

Sometimes we say things we dont mean, words slip, or we dont realize the full weight of what something means. Other times, we make promises we dont intend to keep, or were hypocrites. We should remember that what we say matters. We are called to not conform to the world , and we are called to a very high standard of living . We should use words that build up people and the kingdom of God, not words that destroy and curse. To take it a step further, Avoid such godless chatter, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness .

Before you speak or make an oath, remember Jesus promise: I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned .

Cursing Swearing And Cussing

First, I should make sure were using the same language when talking about bad language. The Catholic Encyclopedia defines cursing as call down evil upon God or creatures, rational or irrational, living or dead. A curse, the encyclopedia provides, can be a general curse for ill-fate or could involve the weather, earth, and disasters. We also distinguish taking the Lords name in vain from the way we use it to curse others: one is a violation of the second commandment, the other is a combination of breaking the commandment and profanity. Profanity has the same meaning as cussing, and we all know what profanities are, so there is no need to provide examples.

Biblical Swearing Is Often Connected To Oaths

Now, let’s go a little deeper.

Much of the swearing in the Bible is connected to the idea of swearing an oath. To swear means to make a solemn declaration, invoking a deity, or a sacred person or thing, to confirm the honesty, truth, and/or the intentionality of the one swearing the oaths to fulfill the declaration.

An example today of swearing an oath occurs in the courtroom when we swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God.”

Using Our Words Wisely

Now that weve looked at these questions, What does the Bible say about cussing? And is cursing a sin? I want to end with a challenge to use our words wisely.

We should use our words in a way that shows our love for God and honors those we are speaking about.

Some of the worst things Ive heard have come from Christians who intentionally dont swear but still, use their words to tear others apart. The point the Bible makes is that the words you use arent the problem. Words are neutral. The way you use words dictates if they become good or bad.

Should Christians cuss? Well that depends. What is right and wrong isnt always the same as what is wise and unwise. Or at least effective and ineffective. While it might be okay to do something, or say something, it might not always be wise.

Heres a better question to ask Would using help or distract?

What is the wisest thing for you to do? Whats the most loving way you can communicate what you need to say?

Life is not all black and white. The Bible doesnt portray it that way either theres a whole lot of gray. This question will help us sort out what the wisest thing for us to do is.

Cursing Creates An Open Gateway Into More Sinning

You might think it is harmless to have a potty mouth, but in Gods eyes, excusing your language choices could mean that you might be in line to excuse other behaviors far worse than cursing down the road. Cursing could be seen as similar to a smoking habit that leads you into more dangerous drugs, as cursing could have you believe it is okay to lie, gossip, or judge people regularly because they are all minor offenses.

King Solomon spoke of this succinctly in the book of Proverbs, telling those reading that death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit . He means that those who find that cursing every day is like breathing will soon eat the fruits of their choice, and those fruits will probably be bitter and cause them lots of spiritual damage.

Paul even impresses it upon his loyal apprentice Timothy in his letter to him in 2 Timothy 2, prompting him to tell those he is serving of the negative effects of cursing: But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness . He could see, and wanted Timothy to be aware, that what could be seen as innocent profanity would only lead to demise for the person who dabbles in it.

Cursing Ruins Your Witness Of Jesus And Dishonors God

In James 3:10 , it is expressed that having the same mouth to bless and curse is dishonorable to the Lord. When you are a follower of Christ, you are representing the Lord, not only in what you do but in what you say, think, and feel. If you are praising God one moment but cursing up a storm in the next moment, your witness as being one in mind with God is exposed as weak.

1 Peter 3:10 tells us that “whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.” God commands us to keep our tongue from all obscene words, filthy and corrupt communication, lying, swearing, cursing, and any evil speech. The Christian life and the words we speak should be free from the deceit and dishonor!

Breaking Curses From The Enemy

Even today, in many cultures, witch doctors or shamans put curses on people through demonic powers. In some cultures, for example, voodoo is practiced. This includes such practices as sticking pins in a doll made in the image of a person, usually with some of that persons hair, fingernail clippings, and so forth incorporated into the doll. Hateful words are projected as the doll is stabbed over and over. There also are more gruesome practices used. However, with all evil witchcraft rituals, it is the hatred and evil projected from these people that is aimed at the targeted person that causes the harm. The curses spoken over that doll do not come to pass because of the doll or the pins. There is no power in those inanimate objects. They come to pass because of the demonic power operating through the person speaking forth the curses.

In many cultures, other than Western Societies, people have no problem understanding these curses and blessings, because the presence of demonic beings is very real to them. In fact, in many places, they leave offerings to appease evil spirits, for the purpose of warding them off so they will leave them alone.

If you have been affected by a curse such as listed above, we have good news for you. By accepting Jesus, you can be free from demonic oppression and actually have authority over the devil and his curses instead of his spirits having power over you or your family.

15. James 3:9-11 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Giving Up Sugar Tasting God’s Goodness

As a latchkey kid, Wendy Speake turned to sugar for comfort. Every Friday, she would pedal to the candy show and use her allowance to fill her bag with candy. And one day, when she was older and a mom of three young boys, she came to realize that she was still pedaling away from her stress and using sugar as comfort, instead of turning to Jesus. She was joyless, worn out, tired, and in need of a change. In this interview, Wendy will challenge Christians to take 40 days to focus on fasting from something they turn to instead of Jesus for comfort. She invited people to break free from a dependence on sugar and taste the goodness of God.

Is Swearing Or Cursing A Sin

I’m not certain that I’d classify swearing and cursing as used in this context to be sins, although my mother certainly did. The problem here with swearing is that it is so highly offensive and vulgar sounding to so many people .

I learned the word, “b***s**t from Mike Everett when I was seven. I had no idea what it meant or that it was a “bad” word. But my mother did. Our extended family was over for dinner when I came into the kitchen singing “Oh, b***s**t, b***s**t, b***s**t b***s**t” at the top of my lungs. I was sent to bed without my supper. I watched through the window as my cousins frolicked. As far as I was concerned, the punishment certainly did not fit the crime. And I still had no idea what I’d done wrong.

Swearing In The Bible

What To Read 17 things the Bible says about the power in ...

Cursing is so commonplace that it shouldn’t surprise us that it seems to be built right into the emotional part of our brains. Sometimes, we don’t have time to think about saying a “bad word ” it just pops out. In fact, over 90% of the last word spoken by an airplane pilot just before the crash is, “s**t”.

As a pastor I obviously had to monitor my mouth carefully. It wasn’t too hard because my father taught me what he called the “preachers'” curse words.” “Boulder” is a good substitute word. Why? Because Boulder is the biggest DAM around. “Sugar” and “Goodness Gracious” work pretty well too.

In his letter to the Galatians, Paul used the strongest swear word in the Greek language to denounce those who were tempting his readers to alter and/or desert the true Gospel of Christ. Paul wrote: But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! .

The term, “eternally condemned” is a nice, sweet translation compared to a translation of the real word Paul used.
