Proposition : Two Of The Three Passages That Possibly Refer To Homosexuality Are Simply More

What Does the Bible Say About LGBT?

1 Corinthians 6:910 says that certain types of people will not inherit the kingdom of God. The list of such people begins with fornicators, idolaters, and adulterers, and it ends with thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, and robbers. Near the middlebetween adulterers and thievesare the two Greek words translated in the New Revised Standard Version as male prostitutes and sodomites. But no special emphasis is placed on these people they are simply listed along with the others. Similarly, 1 Timothy 1:811 says that the law was given not for good people but for bad people, and it then provides a list, giving representative examples of who these bad people might be. Included in the listthis time near the end but again without any special emphasisis the Greek word translated in the New Revised Standard Version as sodomites. In both texts, such people are mentioned simply in passing, in more-or-less miscellaneous catalogues of unacceptable behaviors, but with no special emphasis or attention called to them.

Group B is where they putcha if you may not be moral enough to join the army after committin your special crime. There was all kinds of mean, nasty, ugly-lookin people on the bench there. There was mother rapers . . . father stabbers . . . father rapers . . . Father rapers! sittin right there on the bench next to me!

Before 1946, there were no Bibles that contained the word homosexual. The Greek words mistranslated as homosexual have historically been translated as sodomites, abusers of themselves with mankind, liers with mankind, perverts, and buggerers. Prior to 1946, malakoi was translated as soft or effeminate. Theologians admit that arsenokoitai and malakoi are very difficult words to translate. Unfortunately, the 1946 Revised Standard Version introduced the word homosexual into our English Bibles, and many other English translations chose to follow their example. Simply put, the translations that chose to use the word homosexual are in error. The essence of the original Greek word arsenokoitai is exploitative in nature. It wasnt simply an issue of homosexuality but the abuse and exploitation of another person as a demonstration of power. For further reading on the history of this mistranslation, see Kathy Baldocks article1.

Does The Sin Of Sodom Condemn Homosexuality

The Supreme Court made history on June 27, 2003, when it struck down the sodomy laws of the state of Texas. In a 6-3 decision, the justices reversed course from a ruling seventeen years ago that states could punish homosexuals for private consensual sex. Such activity is typically called sodomy because of the text well study today.

In a survey of passages typically cited on the divisive issue of homosexuality, Genesis 19 and the sin of Sodom is usually listed first. Lot entertained two angels who came to the city to investigate its sins. These angels appeared as men. Before they went to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodomboth young and oldsurrounded the house. They called to Lot, Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them . For such sin, the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah , destroying them.

Is this text a condemnation of homosexuality?

Dr. Walter Wink believes not: That was a case of ostensibly heterosexual males intent on humiliating strangers by treating them like women, thus demasculinizing them . However, Dr. Wink offers no textual evidence that the men were ostensibly heterosexual. His view is only conjectural and stands against the vast majority of interpretation across the centuries.

What Are The Different Lgbtq+ Theologies

LGBTQ+ theology is frequently split into two broad categories: Non-affirming Theology and Affirming Theology

Non-affirming theology commonly appears in two different ways:

  • The first affirms the existence of LGBTQ+ identities, but adheres to a traditional view of marriage and sex as designed for one man and one woman. This version requires that LGBTQ+ persons remain celibate and is a conviction imposed upon others by cisgender, heterosexual persons.

Example: Tiffanys son Lionel just came out as gay. She tells him she accepts his identity, but urges celibacy as the only way to be acceptable to God as a gay Christian. More about Q Christians hope for parents and their LGBTQ+ children can be found on our FAQ page.

  • The second views LGBTQ+ identities themselves as aberrant, disordered, or in some other way illegitimate and therefore inherently outside Gods approval and blessing. This view implicitly or explicitly supports efforts to alter someones sexual orientation or gender identity through conversion therapy practices, and is sometimes referred to as Side X or Ex-gay ideology. Side X/Ex-gay ideology is both dangerous and medically discredited. Q Christian addresses the ramifications of this theology through the UNCHANGED Movement.

    Example:

  • Affirming theology maintains that the gender identities, sexual orientations, and sexual relationships of LGBTQ+ individuals are equally as good and holy in the sight of God as those of cisgender, heterosexual people.

    Intimacy Identity And Culture

Sam Allberry, a same-sex pastor from England, confronts the pain of being alone, even by choice, on the grounds of obedience to God. Celibacy is made more difficult by the elevation of marital intimacy to a lofty position above all other forms, including friendship.

Allberrys fear is that if someones only choice in life seems to be either unbiblical intimacy or no intimacy, theyre going to end up choosing unbiblical intimacy. And if thats the case, I think the wider church shares responsibility for that.

As Allberry asserts, people within the LGBQT+ community are being denied access to this kind of intimacy, so even those who are keen to follow Gods commands and to please him by their faithful obedience are drawn to other sources for belonging and acceptance.

Jesus never taught his disciples to deny friendship and familial love to anyone. Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother .

He also promoted mutually uplifting, godly friendship. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends . The word friend, philos in the Greek, means beloved or dear. I have called you friends, Jesus said to his disciples .

Not everyone accepts forgiveness through Jesus but he offers dignity, love, and truth to everyone. When a gospel-believing person highlights sin in a persons life, the purpose should always be to point that person to Jesus and his saving mercies.

Research Also Offers Glimmer Of Hope

While the research may seem disheartening at first glance, Wilkins and Martin insist it contains a hopeful message.

In particular, our data suggests that perceived conflict between groups is not inevitable, they said. In fact, we were able to successfully lower the extent to which mainline Christians perceive that LGBTQ gains come at a cost for Christians by having them reflect on biblical acceptance. According to recent analyses, mainline Christians now outnumber more conservative groups.

In other words, we identified an intervention to successfully lower ZSBs for most Christians.

    Desire And Inclination Vs Action

What Does the Bible Say About LGBTQ ? | You Asked For It (Pt. 4) | Andy Wood

I should mention again that the issue is not desire or inclination. The issue is the actual performance of the act. Heterosexuals, by definition, have an inclination just like homosexuals, but for both the inclination only becomes sin when it results in actual sex. As James, the Lord’s brother, says:

Each person is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desire and enticed, but when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, which, when it is completed, gives birth to death.

Whether desire is homosexual or heterosexual, it is just temptation when we are enticed. It becomes sin when we give place to our desire and turn it into action.

What Should The Churchs Attitude Be Towards Our Lgbt Friends

So far weve looked at what the Bible says about homosexuality. Ive argued that it identifies same-sex activity as sinful, even though that may rub us the wrong way. But weve also seen that its not our root problem. All of us have a much deeper issue. All of us need Gods grace. Our real issue is that we are proud, and refuse to give God glory for creating us.

I want to shift and ask what our attitude should be towards our LGBT friends. And I want to make three quick points, and then close.

First, lets stand against all kinds of hate and bullying. Here we can actually find a lot of common ground. Homophobia has no place in our culture, and we can all agree to stand against it. Whenever we dont treat another person with the dignity they deserve as someone made in the image of God, we dishonor God and compromise our Christian witness.

My friend Stan Fowler argues that what we really need is something he calls principled pluralism. This means that we should work towards a society in which we practicing homosexuals and those who consider it a moral issue can coexist with mutual respect and civility, while we recognize a serious difference of opinion. I agree. We need to stand against anything but respect and civility. We need to defend the rights of others, including our LGBT friends.

Rosaria Butterfield, the professor I mentioned earlier, speaks highly of the friendship she developed with a pastor. It was a friendship without an agenda. It was just a friendship.

    Will Homosexuals Go To Heaven

    • As mentioned in the “Interpretation and Questions” section above, these verses have been translated from the original Greek into English in various ways, and there are uncertainties about which specific homosexual practices are intended.
    • As stated in verse 11 of , all these sins are sins that God will forgive if a person repents.

Second The Bible Unequivocally Speaks Against Homosexual Behavior

    LGBT Affirmative Scriptures

This is the most important point. Whether English had developed or used the term homosexual is really an unimportant point, because homosexual behavior is described and prohibited in Scripture. For example, the term homosexual is not used in Leviticus 18:22 or 20:13, but it is clearly what is in view, since the sexual relationship described is compared to how a man lies with a woman.

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman it is an abomination.

    Leviticus 18:22

If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination they shall surely be put to death their blood is upon them.

    LEviticus 20:13

The very fact that Leviticus 20:13 speak against both active and passive partners shows that it is the homosexual act itself that is condemned, not a certain aspect of it. Historically pro-LGBT scholars have tried to argue against this point by theorizing that Leviticus 20:13 was a later update of the original law, Leviticus 18:22. Although there is no evidence of such an update, obviously it is necessary to argue that way since the text is problematic the way that it reads for a pro-LGBT viewpoint.

Some pro-LGBT scholars argue that the Levitical prohibitions against homosexuality are outdated and the church has moved beyond those antiquated notions. The problem is that Paul utilizes Leviticus both in Romans 1 as well as 1 Corinthians 6 to formulate his sexual ethics.

Using The Bible Against Lgbtq+ People Is An Abuse Of Scripture

The Church of England issued pastoral guidance from the House of Bishops to its clergy on January 23, following the legal introduction of heterosexual civil partnerships in 2019. While the guidance concerns heterosexual civil partners, the document has, controversially, been used by the church to reiterate its position on sexual relationships outside of heterosexual marriage. It states that sexual relationships outside heterosexual marriage are regarded as falling short of Gods purpose for human beings.

This is squarely in line with the churchs official position on homosexuality, which is that it is incompatible with scripture. We have seen recent attempts by liberal members to get the church to take a more inclusive approach towards gender and sexuality, but these have been rebuffed by conservatives. In October 2018, four bishops from the diocese of Oxford designed to advise local clergy and congregations in order to support LGBTQ+ people and their families, and to learn from the insights of LGTBQ+ people about being church together.

Several months later, more than a hundred concerned Anglicans signed an open letter criticising the guidance. The letter claimed that the attempt at inclusivity by the Oxford bishops actually served to exclude those who hold to the traditional reading of scripture. Their response stated:

What Does The Bible Say About Being Gay

In general, Christians have done a poor job of talking about sexuality, especially when it comes to same-sex orientation. For many, it’s a taboo topic to avoid at all costs. Others speak about it plenty, but they focus solely on truth without any love or grace. What does the Bible really say about being gay? And how should we respond to people who experience same-sex orientation? This study draws on three articlestwo from Christianity Today and one from Her.meneuticsto address these questions in truth and love.

There’s no question that we live in changing times. Many Christians are looking for ways to uphold God’s truth with love and grace. This is especially true as many of us have friends or relatives who are gay. What does the Bible really say about being gay? In this study, we’ll look at what the Bible says about sexuality and what that means for people who experience same-sex orientation. Plus, we’ll explore better ways to talk about sexuality as a whole.

What does the Bible say about LGBTQ?

That the Earth was covered in water when created until God formed land but also that the Earth was completely dry until God brought streams up and watered the planet .

That God created animals first and then humans but also that God created Adam first, then animals, then Eve .

Thats right, the Bible contradicts itself in the first two chapters!

The Bible says in Exodus and Deuteronomy that if a woman is raped her rapist must either marry her or pay her father .

      Jesuss Discussion Of Marriage

In Matthew 19 and parallel in Mark 10, Jesus is asked if a man can divorce his wife. In that context, Jesus replies:

He answered, Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

      Matthew 19:46

Robert A. J. Gagnon, a theologian, argues that Jesuss back-to-back references to Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 show that he presupposed a two-sex requirement for marriage. On the other hand, Bart Ehrman, Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, states of Jesuss references to Genesis 1 and 2, not actually defining marriage. Hes answering a specific question. Ehrman notes further And here the conversation is quite easy. In our surviving records Jesus says nothing about same-sex acts or sexual orientation. Nothing. Nada.
