What does the Bible say about lying?

Lying is an indelible part of the old man. It is natural to Adamic man. Accordingly, Abraham was a liar. Isaac, his son, was also a liar. So also was Jacob Abrahams grandson. A man who has not received the Spirit of Truth cannot but tell lies.

The psalmist says: The wicked are estranged from the womb they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. . Therefore, it is necessary for us to repent and be converted, so that we can receive the truth, and with it newness of life.

Thus, Paul enjoins new creatures in Christ Jesus: Dont tell lies to each other it was your old life with all its wickedness that did that sort of thing now it is dead and gone. You are living a brand new kind of life that is continually learning more and more of what is right, and trying constantly to be more and more like Christ who created this new life within you. .

God hates liars

Since God is truth, the man who is the righteousness of God in Christ naturally hates lies. Solomon says: A good man hates lies wicked men lie constantly and come to shame. . God says: He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house he who tells lies shall not continue in my presence. .

Of the seven things God hates, three pertain to telling lies: There are six things the Lord hates- no, seven: haughtiness, lying, murdering, plotting evil, eagerness to do wrong, a false witness, sowing discord among brothers. .

Bible Verses About Consequences Of Lying

Breaking God’s commands comes with consequences, and lying is no different. Lying is a detrimental habit that ruins relationships and also tarnishes your reputation. No one wants to interact with a known liar. Outside of those general consequences, the Word of God has a lot to say about both the short and long-term consequences of lying.

Lying Leads Others To Sin

Liars often influence other people to tell lies. Lying tends to feed off of itself. The more people tell lies, the more people get involved, especially when influential people tell lies. False teachers also deceive other people and lead them to sin.

Biblical examples

  • Genesis 3:13 The first sin occurred because the serpent deceived Eve.
  • Isaiah 9: 14-16 The prophets taught lies and led the people to err and be destroyed.
  • Ezekiel 13:22 The lies of false teachers not only strengthen the hands of the wicked but also sadden the righteous.

Many have been led into sin by the influence of people who lie and deceive. People who make mistakes are still responsible because they must verify what they are taught. But the false teacher is also responsible for the fact that his lies led people to sin.

Telling White Lies To Help Yourself

Who defines the “good” that results from a lie? A friend of mine once told a white lie, and I believed her. Our friends laughed when I realized she had lied, which was a benefit to her, giving her a good reputation as being funny. But what about me, her friend who she took advantage of? I felt hurt and betrayed. Matthew 23:12 says, “Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Telling a white lie to benefit oneself is nothing but selfishness. When our words are motivated by showing off to make ourselves look better, smarter, funnier, more experienced, etc., then we will find ourselves tempted by pride .

So The Great Dragon Was Cast Out That Serpent Of Old Called The Devil And Satan Who Deceives The Whole World He Was Cast To The Earth And His Angels Were Cast Out With Him Revelation 1: 9 Nkjv

Satan is the greatest deceiver. As he sought to usurp God’s authority, he was cast down to earth along with one-third of the angelic host that believed his lies. He was the same serpent that deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden and the one who throughout history continues to lead people astray.

As we look around, we can see the results of Satan’s deception – lies, scamming, murders, cults, and sexual immorality. Peter warns us to be sober and vigilant because the devil is our enemy, and like a roaring lion, he intends to devour us. We have to guard our hearts and mind against Satan’s lies.

Danger Of Being Deceived By Men: Deception Of End Times

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ and shall deceive many. Matthew 24:3-5

In Matthew 24, Jesus responded to the questions that the disciples asked of Him pertaining to what would be the sign of his coming and the end of the world with a warning that deception would be prevalent in the earth, especially religious deception. His words warned us of the danger of being deceived by men. This being the case, we need to understand what to look for and also we should be aware of how we can be deceived.

Jesus told us to be on guard and to be careful so that no man would deceive us and he tells us that much of the deception would come from people who would be using His name and even some people would be so deceived they would literally claim to be Christ, Himself. Jesus, said deception would come from two sources:

  • People who would come in His name. These would be people who falsely represented Christ presenting themselves as pastors, prophets, teachers, evangelists and so-called Christian leaders, but were really wolves in sheeps clothing.
  • Matthew 7:20:Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. What are these fruits?

Why Is Telling The Truth Such A Big Deal

To tell the truth is not a suggestion, it is a command . All believers are called to be truthful, and truthfulness honors the Lord, the “God of truth” . Truthfulness is a part of the armor we put on when fighting against the father of lies .

Have you ever experienced being lied to? Have you ever caught someone in a “white lie”?” It’s not exactly fun, is it? Big lies, small liesthere’s no difference. The intention of deception will grow in the heart of a liar. White lies are training for bigger lies. Don’t give in, or your conscience may be seared . We are new creations in Christ , and we can choose to sin no more .

“The LORD says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.'”Psalm 32:8

    TL DR

As believers of Christ, we should all be working toward glorifying the Lord with our words and actions. Lying is never something good or righteous and could lead to being known as a liar. God desires for us to be truth-tellers, and He will honor thateven if it ends up hurting the person we must tell the truth to. We all need to walk in the light, and lying would only prevent people from seeing Christ’s glory in us. Lies can only mar the goodness the children of God should have .

    Stop Drawing From Bitter Springs

What Does The Bible Say About Lying?

Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? James 3:11. If we draw from the good spring one minute and then draw from the bitter spring the next, then we have deceived ourselves. We cannot serve God and mammon. Neither can we worship God and idols.

All bitter springs have to be stopped. All idolatry must be destroyed. The flesh with its lusts and desires must be crucified. If this is not donevery exactlythen we are deceiving ourselves. A double-minded or half-hearted person can never grow up to Him who is the Head, Christ. Such a person has deceived himself.

Where Do White Lies Come From

The Bible calls Satan the father of lies . The apostle Paul tells us that Satan masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve . We shouldnt masquerade as servants of righteousness, but be actual servants of righteousness, truth-tellers who resist the temptation to speak white lies.

Being truthful is a precious delight to God . Not only that, but telling only truths helps strengthen our character and reputation, making us more Christlike. Proverbs 21:21 says, Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

Don’t Miss: What Are The Different Versions Of The Bible

    Is Lying A Sin

Telling a lie is certainly not the opposite!

There are several passages in the Bible, including in Psalms and Proverbs, that point out lies and deceit as actions that are not in line with the Lords plan.

There are other parts of the Bible that are even more specific. Exodus says that no person shall bear false witness against their neighbor. When it speaks of bearing false witness, it means to lie about what you have witnessed and it comes from close-knit communities where it was more common for people to give their neighbors up to authorities, sometimes for falsehoods.

The truth faithful always remain truthful. If you know that you have lied about something, bring your concerns to the Lord and correct your mistake. The true test lies in finding redemption after we have endured temptations or sin.

Leviticus 19 says that people shall not steal, or deal falsely. The same sentence says that people should not lie to one another.

The Bible clearly tells us that lying is considered wrong in the eyes of the Lord but the Bible also tells us that the faithful can find redemption in accepting Christ and fixing the mistakes that they might have made.

If a liar repents and accepts the Lord, redemption is still to be found. Those who continue to lie knowingly and do not halt their ways, will surely be held accountable for their actions.

    Why Is Lying A Problem

Lying is harmful to ourselves and to the people we are in relationships with. Lying is an act of betrayal, and it violates the trust your friend, partner, or family member is trying to build with you. When people uncover lies, depending on how damaging the lies are, some relationships are ruined beyond repair. The risk is not worth losing such a valuable connection. Lying also goes more complicated the longer someone lies. When people lie, they have to tell more and more lies to cover up the truth, which gets more and more stressful and emotionally draining. Because lies hide a part of our ourselves and our feelings, it also becomes more and more difficult for people who lie to know how they truly feel. Telling the truth is challenging, but it also frees us from the burden of dishonesty, and makes our friendships and relationships more trusting and stable. If you have lied to someone you care about, apologize, ask for forgiveness, and let them know how much you want to change this behavior. If you struggle with lying and are unsure how to stop, you can talk to a counselor or mentor about breaking the cycle. If lying has hurt you, a mentor can help you find ways to rebuild trust in your relationships.

John : 44 Devil Is The Father Of Lies

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Through lies, sin entered this world. The devil deceived the woman, and death was pronounced upon men. God is merciful, sent his only son to die for our sins. Yet, he was still tempted by the devil

The devil is the father of lies. He tempts us daily with things that we desire to have. The devil says in our hearts that you will not die if you sin. He lets us accept sin as a part of our lives. The truth is not in the devil. He only knows lies.

Therefore, if we lie, we are not of God. God can never lie to us.
