When We Accept Jesus As Our Lord And Saviour We Are Filled With A Level Of Peace Beyond Our Own Understanding Here Are Some Of Our Favourite Bible Verses About Peace

What Does The Bible Say About Peace On Earth?

30 Jun, 2020

When peace comes from Jesus, it becomes more than a segment of time free from earthly disturbances. More than a fleeting moment of ‘quiet’.

True peace is a state of being. It’s faithfully following God’s plan for you, living every day completely content with where He has placed you. It’s not having to wonder what life might have been like if you followed a different path.

Peace is fully trusting God, without any fear. Peace is sleeping in the middle of a storm.

“Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Matthew 8:23-27

Through Jesus, we can face even the toughest times with unshakable peaceall we need to do is ask.

Here are some of our favourite Bible verses about peace:

What Is The Deeper Meaning Of Peace That Surpasses All Understanding

However, it takes a fuller reading of the passage to understand all the nuances of this oft-quoted Scripture.

Just before Paul reassures the people of this perfect peace available to guard their hearts, he encourages them to do something that might sound odd in light of their difficult experiences: Rejoice in the Lord. And not only on occasion, or when times are good, but to do so always. As Paul writes,

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus .

In essence, he says, dont worry about a thing. Ask God for what you need, be grateful, and joyful in your faith, and your heart and mind will be wrapped tenderly in the protective peace of the Lord.

The key here is that this peace comes as a result of an action: Prayer. When we petition God go to Him with our requests, worries, cares, and concerns we get a bonus gift: Not only does He hear us, but He gives us a peaceful, easy feeling in return because weve dealt with the problem correctly by giving it over to the only One who can do anything about it.

Its a secure confidence, a deep-rooted knowledge, that God is in charge and will take care of everything.

Symbol Of Purity And Holiness

As mentioned above, doves are portrayed as white in color which is the color of purity. White is a color that is easy for us all to understand and is mentioned in both the Old and the New Testament. Every time the color white is mentioned or used, it paints the picture of righteousness, holiness, and purity.

The dove that was sent out by Noah brought in an olive branch. In the Bible, olive oil was used for sanctification and anointing. Those anointed were set apart for the work of the Lord and were meant to observe holiness.

Symbolism Of The Holy Spirit

In the Book of Matthew 3:16, the Bible says,

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.

In all the four gospels the Bible narrates how the Holy Spirit of God descended on Jesus in the form of a dove. This was after the baptism by water conducted by John the Baptist.

The picture painted here is not only vivid, but also very beautiful. If you think through this symbolism, you will find some parallels between the dove and the Holy Spirit.

In most species, doves come white in color which in the Holy Spirit interpretation represents purity. Doves are also gentle. Research has it that doves do not retaliate or fight back even if their nests are under attack. However, they cry in distress.

The Holy Spirit as explained to us through scripture is gentle and kind as well. Believers filled with the spirit are warned against vengeance and retaliation. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us in times of trouble just like the dove in distress.

Temptation Is Not Sin Yielding To Temptation Is

With that background, Paul exhorted believers not to make the same choices the Israelites madenot to provoke Gods discipline by willfully sinning. None of us is above Gods discipline if we engage in sin. We must look for and take the way of escape God provides in every situation where temptation is found . To think our temptation is unique is to believe a lie. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man . There are no new temptations in life.

The apostle James argued that if temptation becomes serious, it is because we have allowed it to do so. Our own desires entice us away from God and desire gives birth to sin . God doesnt tempt us, but He may allow temptation to enter our lives in order to give us opportunities to make obedient and mature choices.

Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, and He took the same means of escape that is available to usobedience to Gods Word . Temptation is not sin yielding to temptation is. There is always a righteous choice to be made if we are willing to seek it.

Where Is The Phrase ‘peace Be Still’ In Scripture

Jesus spoke the words Peace, be still! to His followers who were, at the moment, harried, panicked fishermen who forgot Jesus could completely control their frightful circumstances.

In , we read that one evening Jesus said to His disciples Let us cross over to the other side of the lake. So, they left the crowd in a few boats and a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing? .

Now, the disciples had no reason to be afraid. They were going to a place where Jesus wanted to go. And since God-in-the-flesh was right there with them in the boat, there was nothing that would keep them from getting there. Yet they panicked.

Scripture tells us Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be still! And the wind ceased and there was a great calm .

I love how Jesus, at the height of the storm, told the wind and the waves, Quiet! Be still! . Yet His panicked disciples actually needed to hear and heed that rebuke. Although the text says Jesus rebuked the wind and waves, l like to think He said those words out loud so His disciples would get the hint and the wind and waves simply overheardand obeyed!

Proverbs 17:1 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.

Romans 14:19 So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.

Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

Peace For The Believer Today

Today, peace is more than flashing the peace sign or wearing a t-shirt with a peace symbol. Perfect peace is also more than the absence of conflict. It is the combination of completeness and wholeness as a direct result of faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. Those who do not experience perfect peace act as though Jesus’ redemption work was not finished on the cross.

Before Jesus left the world, He promised that He was leaving a gift of peace. He said, “I am leaving you with a gift — peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

According to John 14:27, perfect peace is accepting the gift of peace. However, it is not a physical, visible or tangible gift. It is a gift that is much better than the peace the world tends to offer. It is one that soothes the mind and heart in times of trouble and turmoil. The peace that Jesus left to His followers calms internal conflicts and things that vex the spirit. The peace of God moves into the crevices of the heart to eliminate the issues that keep people in bondage.

Those who do not experience perfect peace act as though Jesus’ redemptive work was not finished on the cross.
