Should Christians Marry Unbelievers, Atheists & Muslims?

11. Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

An unbeliever might bow his head before idols and other energies, one that doesnt go down rightly with believers. A believer will continue giving thanks to God our Father, while a nonbeliever might not. Thus, not being in the company of another believer may not allow one to glorify God, which is one of the most disheartening consequences of marrying an unbeliever.

12. Ephesians 5:22-28 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up

for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Will a non-Christian abide by these laws? It isnt hard to imagine the consequences of marrying an unbeliever anymore.

13. Proverbs 12:15 Fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to others.

The New Testament Commands

The first reason why believers cannot marry unbelievers is that the Bible forbids it. There are two primary New Testament texts that speak to the issue of marriage between a believer and an unbeliever. In his first letter to the Corinthian church, Paul says, after a detailed discussion of marriage and singleness, that a woman whose husband has died is free to marry whomever she wishes, only in the Lord . The principle in this text is that where legitimate marriage can occurthe believer has never married, or they are released from their previous marriage by the death of a spouseit can only occur between two believers.

The second text that offers clarity on this issue is 2 Corinthians 6:14 where Paul says, Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. The phrase unequally yoked uses farming imagery to illustrate how counterproductive it is to link oneself intimately with an unbeliever. Like coupling two animals who are incompatible in strength, size, weight, and plowing skill, there will be constant friction, frustration, and futility for two people who enter into marriage with foundational spiritual differences.

But Paul is also interested in underscoring the folly of this kind of partnership. With a blistering volley of rhetorical questions, the apostle undermines any hope that genuine intimacythe kind of intimacy that married couples are intended to sharecan exist between a believer and unbeliever. Paul asks,

Finally, it must be emphasized that religions, and those who adhere to religious doctrines, may continue to advocate with utmost, sincere conviction that, by divine precepts, same-sex marriage should not be condoned. The First Amendment ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths, and to their own deep aspirations to continue the family structure they have long revered.7

When Two Are Unequally Yoked

Is it biblical for a believer to marry an unbeliever

A yoke conveys the idea of two bulls joined to the task of pulling a plow, but they are not well matched. They are unable to pull the plow in a straight line. This is what it looks like when one partner follows Christ, and the other does not.

Its always important to ask ourselves in every area of life how a believer can have any kind of partnership with an unbeliever. This is particularly true in . An unbeliever doesnt follow the Lord so everything else in their life is an idol. Including their spouse.

When one decides to follow Christ, to the exclusion of anything and anyone else means that ones spouse is not the center of his or her world. When one decides to follow Christ, he or she yields to Him first, and His Holy Spirit provides direction.

Generally, unbelievers prefer to follow their own directions. This can cause frustration, friction, anger, and resentment. How can you follow a Master who demands absolute allegiance if you choose to become one flesh with a person who ignores His truth? .

Is It Okay For A Pastor To Marry Two Unbelievers

The only restriction I see in Scripture regards a Christian marrying an unbeliever. Marriage is an divine institution and ordained of God for all people. It is better for people to marry than to live together in an unmarried state for many reasons, but one of the chief reasons is that marriage does continue to promote the sanctity of marriage and the family.

I think when pastors are asked to marry unbelievers they should point out that they are not in the business of conducting marriage ceremonies, but that you would be glad to marry them if they are willing to come for a series of counseling sessions. Explain that you are in the ministry of building and promoting solid family relationships, etc. Other than the sentimental value or to please parents, getting married in a church will add no special benefits to their relationship or place Gods blessing on their marriage. If they are willing to come for counseling, then this give you an opportunity to share the gospel in the process of discussing the origin and purpose of marriage, the need of God, and so on.

What if they do not come to believe in the Savior, or what if only one of them does? If both do not, then the above still applies regarding marriage as a divine institution, but insist on sharing the truth at least about marriage as God designed it. If only one person comes to Christ, then thats a different story and I think you would need to say, I cant marry you because

Consequences Of Marrying An Unbeliever

It isnt in Gods will for believers to marry outside their faith, and thats why the Bible talks about the consequences of marrying an unbeliever. Lets take a look at 20 such Bible verses that talk about being in love with a non-believer. Some might come across as too direct or scary, but in the end, havent we learned to keep God above and beyond everyone? So, lets understand these with an open mind, heart, and soul.

1. 1 Corinthians 7:15-16 But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances God has called us to live in peace. How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

This Bible verse about the consequences of marrying an unbeliever clearly indicates that one neednt be with someone only because they think they can save their partner. Everyone has their own battle to fight on this planet, and one should put their faith in the Lord at the topmost place. There is no guarantee that either partner can save the other.

2. Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

And how can you sharpen someone who isnt one of you? If one of the partners is not on the same page as the other, how will it lead to a happy ending?

3. 2 Corinthians 6:17 Therefore, Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.

Objection #: My Situation Is Unique

You may think the circumstances of how you met, or your boyfriend or girlfriends spiritual sensitivity, or your love for each other despite your differences qualifies your relationship as different from those who are or who have been in a similar situation. Yes, you understand that Scripture forbids marrying an unbeliever, and yes, you know that most of the time the unbeliever doesnt eventually believe in Christ but your situation is unique.

The question we often fail to ask is, unique to what? Unique in the sense that things will turn out different? That cannot be guaranteed, nor is it, given the testimony of others, a probable outcome. Unique in the sense that somehow you are exempt from obedience in this case? Any assumption that connects exemption from obedience to particular circumstances is usually a sign that you are in the throes of self-deception. Unique in the sense that no one has ever been faced with this kind of decision? No, this temptation, like all others, is one that is common to man . The truth is that your situation is not unique at all.

What You Must Not Do

What should a Believer do if he or she is married to an ...

The Apostle Paul clearly teaches what the believer must not do. He or she, if the unbeliever wishes to remain married, must not leave. But to the rest I say, not the Lord, that if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her. And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away .

Pauls words, I say, not the Lord does not mean he is expressing his opinion. What he previously said was something Jesus had said. Now he is saying something Jesus had not said. In other words, he is adding something Jesus had not specifically addressed. Paul said, I say. He is speaking with apostolic authority.
