What Does Transgression Mean In The Bible

Legally Prohibited Versus Inherently Wrong

Sin

Elder Dallin H. Oaks gives perhaps the best explanation of what is wrong and what is prohibited:

This suggested contrast between a sin and a transgression reminds us of the careful wording in the second article of faith: We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adams transgression . It also echoes a familiar distinction in the law. Some acts, like murder, are crimes because they are inherently wrong. Other acts, like operating without a license, are crimes only because they are legally prohibited. Under these distinctions, the act that produced the Fall was not a sininherently wrongbut a transgressionwrong because it was formally prohibited. These words are not always used to denote something different, but this distinction seems meaningful in the circumstances of the Fall.

There is another distinction that is important. Some acts are simply mistakes.

Nephi : 22 Eternal Destruction

  • Verse 22 in 2 Nephi 1 does not mean that the spirit and the body of the wicked will be annihilated or become extinct. Our spirits are eternal in nature, and all people born on earth will have a physical resurrection . President Joseph Fielding Smith explained the meaning of the destruction of the soul, as Nephi used it:

âDestruction does not mean annihilation. We know, because we are taught in the revelations of the Lord, that a soul cannot be destroyed.

âEvery soul born into this world shall receive the resurrection and immortality and shall endure forever. Destruction does not mean, then, annihilation. When the Lord says they shall be destroyed, he means that they shall be banished from his presence, that they shall be cut off from the presence of light and truth, and shall not have the privilege of gaining this exaltation and that is destructionâ . Wickedness destroys the opportunity for a resurrection into a higher degree of glory .

The Conscience And Forgiveness In Christ Alone

What Does Transgression Mean in the Bible?

The human conscience is a gift from a good, holy God to show us our sins and to drive us to the Lord. In the person and finished work of the Lord Jesus, there is forgiveness because Jesus paid for everyones sin in their place and rose again. Rather than excusing, minimizing, or deflecting our sin, let the people of God give thanks for the gift of conscience and confess our sin to the Lord, who alone forgives when we transgress against Him.

Nephi : 15 The Tree Of Knowledge Of Good And Evil And The Tree Of Life

  • Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained the meaning of the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil: âAs to the fall, the scriptures set forth that there were in the Garden of Eden two trees. One was the tree of life, which figuratively refers to eternal life the other was the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which figuratively refers to how and why and in what manner mortality and all that appertains to it came into beingâ .

Nephi : 56 By The Law No Flesh Is Justified

  • Justification means âto be pardoned from punishment for sin and declared guiltless. A person is justified by the Saviorâs grace through faith in him. This faith is shown by repentance and obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel. Jesus Christâs atonement enables mankind to repent and be justified or pardoned from punishment they otherwise would receiveâ .

Elder Dallin H. Oaks instructed us that the Book of Mormon teaches that âsalvation does not come by keeping the commandments alone. âBy the law no flesh is justifiedâ . Even those who serve God with their whole souls are unprofitable servants . Man cannot earn his own salvation.

âThe Book of Mormon teaches, âSince man had fallen he could not merit anything of himselfâ . âThere can be nothing which is short of an infinite atonement which will suffice for the sins of the worldâ . âWherefore, redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah ⦠he offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the lawâ . And so we âpreach of Christ ⦠that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sinsâ â .

  • What Does The Bible Say About Accountability

What Does The Bible Say About Accountability? Behold, the Bible says much about accountability. In fact, we need to understand that all of us are accountable before God. In support, 2 Corinthians 5:10 says, we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. The Almighty God is holy in all His ways. He is a God of righteousness and justice. God knows everything that happens and therefore all our words, thoughts, and actions will be judged. Amazingly, God is Omniscient and Omnipotent. It is without a doubt that God is absolutely just. With this in mind, it is clear that judgment is necessary for the holiness of God to be preserved and enacted, and we will all stand before God one day in judgment.

They are indeed one in our handsâ .

Other Bible Verses That Define Sin

What is the difference between iniquity, sin, and ...

Though 1 John 3:4 gives the Bibles most basic and clear definition of sin, there are a number of scriptures that give additional definitions of sin:

    • Whatever is not from faith is sin .
    • Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin .
    • All unrighteousness is sin .

These scriptures show that sin is also much broader than just breaking the letter of one of the 10 Commandments. Sin can be making a decision based on unfaithfulness to God and can also be neglecting to do whats right when we have the opportunity. How Can I Learn More About These Distinctions

As a former attorney and state supreme court judge, Elder Oaks thoroughly understands the differences between legal and moral wrongs, as well as intentional and unintentional mistakes. He has visited these themes often. The talks “The Great Plan of Happiness” and “Sins and Mistakes” can help us all understand the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ and how they are to be applied in this life.

If you are unfamiliar with the Plan of Salvation, sometimes called the Plan of Happiness or Redemption, you can review it in brief or in detail.

    What Were King Sauls Transgressions

So that was a direct, deliberate violation of the spoken Word of God to him however, it can be the written Word of God also.

For example, King Saul violated for he knew, he knew what the Scripture says about witches and that we should not accept, or seek counsel from them.

He knew also what the Scripture said about exterminating witches from the land. Therefore, he went ahead and he got rid of all the witches, that is, people with familiar spirit in the land.

Samuel, the prophet of God, gave King Saul specific instructions. He said to King Saul, go before me, go down to Gilgal. Ill be there in seven days and when I come, Im going to offer peace offerings and other offerings.

So, Saul went down to Gilgal and waited. Seven days passed and Samuel didnt come. What did Saul do? Well, he offered offerings to God, but Samuel had expressly told him, as a man of God, he was speaking for God, not to do this.

Scripture Teaches To Correct Mistakes And Repent Of Sin

Jewish Insights into Scripture III – What does “sin” mean in the Bible?

In the first chapter of the Doctrine and Covenants, there are two verses that suggest there is a clear distinction between error and sin. Errors should be corrected, but sins need to be repented of. Elder Oaks presents a compelling description of what are sins and what are mistakes.

For most of us, most of the time, the choice between good and bad is easy. What usually causes us difficulty is determining which uses of our time and influence are merely good, or better, or best. Applying that fact to the question of sins and mistakes, I would say that a deliberately wrong choice in the contest between what is clearly good and what is clearly bad is a sin, but a poor choice among things that are good, better, and best is merely a mistake.

Notice that Oaks clearly delineates that these statements are his own opinion. In LDS life, doctrine carries more weight than opinion, even if opinion is helpful.

The phrase good, better, and best was eventually the topic of another important address of Elder Oaks at a subsequent General Conference.

What Is The Difference Between Sin Transgression And Iniquity

FERGUSON: Sin, transgression, and iniquity are different words in the Old Testament. Most of us are familiar with the Greek term hamartia, meaning sin, which conveys the idea of falling short of the mark. We are made for the glory of God, but sin causes us to fall short of the mark. Transgression has the very basic idea of crossing the line. God has given us His law, and we cross the line. Iniquity has the sense in Psalm 51, for example, of twistedness. There is a twistedness in us as a consequence of this. All of these words are different angles of one and the same reality: our disobedience to God, our againstness, our hatred, our diversion from Him.

They say that the more important something is, the more words youll find in that culture for that something. And there is an abundance of vocabulary in the Hebrew Old Testament for sin. But the great thing is, there is also an abundance of vocabulary for the idea of grace. So theres bad news, but theres also very good news.

SPROUL: Weve heard tonight about the last written words of Luther: We are beggars. This is true. When we talk about debt and transgressions, the Scriptures say that we are debtors who cannot pay their debts. God and God alone has the absolute right to impose obligations on His creatures. And He has done that. He has said, You must do this, and you must not do that. And we owe it to God to perform those obligations. If we dont, we become debtors to the lawand debtors to the God of the law.

    What Is Moral Transgression

The Perception of Moral Transgressions as Harmful and Disgusting. Many immoral acts, such as stealing from a child, have victims: Immoral acts are wrong because someone is harmed. … Perceiving harm in victimless moral transgressions has traditionally been interpreted as the outcome of effortful rationalization.

Nephi : 2 Consecrate Afflictions For Gain

    • In 2 Nephi 2:2 Lehi stated that the trials we endure can turn to our benefit . Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained how a sense of gratitude enables us to see our hardships in the context of our purpose here on earth: âWhen we give thanks in all things, we see hardships and adversities in the context of the purpose of life. We are sent here to be tested. There must be opposition in all things. We are meant to learn and grow through that opposition, through meeting our challenges, and through teaching others to do the sameâ .

    • Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles explained that God provides us with challenges that are designed to help us grow spiritually: âJust when all seems to be going right, challenges often come in multiple doses applied simultaneously. When those trials are not consequences of your disobedience, they are evidence that the Lord feels you are prepared to grow more . He therefore gives you experiences that stimulate growth, understanding, and compassion which polish you for your everlasting benefit. To get you from where you are to where He wants you to be requires a lot of stretching, and that generally entails discomfort and painâ .
