What Is The 1st Commandment In The Bible

The Purpose And Meaning Of The First Commandment

The First Commandment: What Is Our Greatest Priority?

Establishing, developing and maintaining a personal relationship with the true living God is the most important commitment we can ever make. That is the primary focus of the first of the Ten Commandments. It reads as follows,

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.Exodus 20:2-3

When Jesus was asked which of all the laws of Scripture is the greatest, Christ responded with the command emphasizing the supreme importance of our personal relationship with God: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.Matthew 22:35-38. See also Deuteronomy 6:5

The supreme guiding power over our lives, that which controls our ideals is our focus of worship. Many things can take the place of the worship of the true God in our hearts and minds. The adoration of these things will eliminate any possibility of our establishing or maintaining a real relationship with God.

He created for us a wonderful dwelling in our beautiful planet. He fashioned it to provide us with everything we need for our material well being and survival. It is His desire that we enjoy and appreciate His gifts to us. At the same time, He wants us to understand that we must never direct our worship toward anything that He has created or regard it as the source of our life and blessings. Only the Creator and never the creation is to receive that honour.

Bible Study Lesson 501

The 1st Commandment Bible Verses:God spoke all these words, saying, “You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:1,3 NHEB.

Preliminary Bible Study Questions:

1) What is the First Commandment?2) Why does the First Commandment exist?3) How do you obey this Commandment? The Lord God directly spoke and personally wrote the First Commandment . Like nothing else, this law must be taken seriously by us. This law is eternal and will permanently guard the entire being of God. Even after the first creation passes away the 1st commandment will guard God’s being from his creatures.

The beautiful thing about heaven is that there will be no sin. The reason why is because our sinful nature will be removed and we’ll be present with Jesus Christ, perfectly restrained from breaking God’s laws. That’s the BIG picture, so let’s now begin breaking down the 1st commandment. Keep in mind, though, that God’s Law is a single unit. If you break one commandment, you’re guilty of all .

What Is The 10th Commandment In The Bible

Commandments

“You shall not covet” means that we should banish our desires for whatever does not belong to us. Never having enough money is regarded as a symptom of the love of money. Obedience to the tenth commandment requires that envy be banished from the human heart.

Also Know, why did God give Moses the Ten Commandments? God declared that the Israelites were his own people and that they must listen to God and obey His laws. These laws were the Ten Commandments which were given to Moses on two stone tablets, and they set out the basic principles that would govern the Israelites lives.

Beside above, why is the tenth commandment important?

A: God gave the Ten Commandments to us, and the reason is because he wants us to live good lives â lives that are peaceful and happy and productive. God isn’t a harsh, angry judge just waiting for us to get out of line so he can punish us.

The Difference Between The 1st And 2nd Commandments

The first two commandments are closely related. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol You shall not bow down to them or worship them. They are similar, but there is an important difference .

The first commandment forbids worshiping a false god. The second commandment forbids worshiping the true God in a false manner. The first commandment has to do with whom you will worship. The second commandment has to do with how you worship. The first commandment already prohibited worshiping the false gods and idols of other nations. The second commandment prohibits the use of idols in worshiping the one true God.

Aaron broke the second commandment when he presented the golden calf to the people and said, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt, and then built an altar in front of the calf and announced, Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD. Moses later instructed the people, You saw no form of any kind the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape.

The first commandment prohibits worshiping a false god or any image of a false god. The second commandment prohibits making or worshiping an image of the true God.

Keep The Sabbath Day Holy

Bible reference – Exodus 20:8-11:Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Explanation: We seem to always be busy and need physical rest and spiritual rest. We need the Sabbath or God would not have made it for us. Jesus said that it was made for man and that He Himself is the Lord of the Sabbath .

The Sabbath is the memorial of His creative work, and it is also a test of mans willingness to recognize his Creators first claim to his time. Wherever we are and whether we regard Gods holy day or not the commandment is still there. Do you recognize and observe it in your home?

How many millions violate this commandment every day! And how many do about the same thing with common slang! Let us remember what Jesus said to some careless talkers of His day.

It is recorded in Matthew 12:36, 37, But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

What Does Jesus Say About The Ten Commandments

    The First Commandment

Here is what Jesus taught about the second of these things: the commandments as he saw them. In the story, a man asks what must be done to inherit eternal life. Thou knowest the commandments: Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor thy father and mother.

What Does Hope Oblige Us To Do

Hope obliges us to trust firmly that God will give us eternal life and the means to obtain it.

Paul, a servant of God and apostle of Jesus Christ, in accordance with the faith of God’s elect and the full knowledge of the truth which is according to piety, in the hope of life everlasting which God, who does not lie, promised before the ages began.

    Why This Is A Commandment

What is the reason for this commandment, why would worshiping other gods be harmful?

    1. Worshiping other gods offends God. To recognize something or someone else as the source of life and the world is offensive to the one who gives life. It also robs a person of the opportunity to build a relationship with God, the true God.

    2. Worshiping other gods is dangerous. When people worship something other than God, they are in effect, relying on something that has no power to save them or help them. Sincere and zealous worship of an idol or an idea of god that is false can never replace worship of the true God. Because He is good, God sustains and blesses such people for a time on this earth, but eventually they lose the greater blessing of heaven.

If you do not worship the true God on earth, you will not worship Him in heaven either.

  • Love Of Husband And Wife

According to Church teaching, spousal love is intended to form an unbroken, two-fold end: the union of husband and wife and the transmission of life. The unitive aspect includes the transference of each partner’s being “so that they are no longer two but one flesh.” The sacrament of matrimony is viewed as God’s sealing the consent which binds the partners together. Church teaching on the marital state requires spousal acceptance of each other’s failures and faults, and the recognition that the “call to holiness in marriage” is one that requires a process of spiritual growth and conversion that can last throughout life.

Fecundity of marriage, sexual pleasure, birth control

The Church position on sexual activity can be summarized as: “sexual activity belongs only in marriage as an expression of total self-giving and union, and always open to the possibility of new life.” Sexual acts in marriage are considered “noble and honorable” and are meant to be enjoyed with “joy and gratitude.” Sexuality is to be reserved to marriage: “by its very nature conjugal love requires the inviolable fidelity of the spouses. This is the consequence of the gift of themselves which they make to each other. Love seeks to be definitive it cannot be an arrangement ‘until further notice.'” The “intimate union of marriage, as a mutual giving of two persons, and the good of the children, demand total fidelity from the spouses and require an unbreakable union between them.” “.

How Can The True God Be More Real To Us

    The First Commandment

It is through Gods remarkable works that we can best comprehend Gods character. David describes his enthusiastic admiration for Gods care and concern for His creation: I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, and shall sing of Your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works .

Another Psalm exclaims: Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness .

Moses adds that our Creator administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing . God is concerned about the well-being of all peopleeven those who live in ignorance of His existence.

Why is it so important that we understand the fundamentals of Gods character? It is vital that we understand God because He wants to create in us that same characterHis divine nature. Peter tells us that God has given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature .
