John : 19 The Christian And Assurance

What Does the Bible Say About the Antichrist? by Pastor Dennis Slavens

1 John teaches that there will be those who fall away from the faith and abandon orthodoxy. Such people are those who have made empty professions of faith and who never possessed true and saving faith. Those born of the Lord by the Holy Spirit will by grace persevere .

1 John 2:19 applies to all who deny the faith in the local church. It is the departure of the false teachers, though, that prompts Johns writing of this particular verse. The false teachers were those many antichrists that will come .

While we await the day of the final Antichrist, we have lesser antichrists who will come beforehand and who are here now. Those antichrists are liars, and those who possess eternal life are those who are to recognize when and where the spirit of the antichrist occurs. 1 John 2:22 teaches Christians that the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ is a liar and an antichrist.

In view here, in this denial of the faith once and for all delivered to the saints is not only a denial of Jesus the Messiah but of the Incarnation. The Incarnation is critical to biblical orthodoxy and an important way Christians can be assured of salvation .;

The false teachers John is countering accepted the view of Cerinthus who called Jesus the Christ but denied the apostolic definition of the title. Instead of seeing the Christ as the eternal Son of God who became Incarnate, followers of Cerinthus were convinced Jesus was a mere man, His entire life only possessing the spirit of Christ.

What Is An Anti

The word anti means to be opposed to or to be the opposite of.; You could say that anything that has the prefix anti on it is against what it is attached to.; The word anti literally means to be opposed too.; Like the word antibacterial means that the substance attacks bacteria or is against bacteria.; So the anti-Christ attacks anything about Christ; His message, His person, His character.; There are many anti-Christs out there today and there always have been since the time of Christ on earth.; This is nothing new today.; The fact that there are anti-Christs, lower-case a, has nothing to do with the Anti-Christ, upper-case A.; There are many anti-Christs but there is only one Anti-Christ.

Standing Fast For The Deity Of Christ

From Cerinthus in the second century to Joseph Smith in the 19th;century and from the earliest Arians to Jehovah’s Witnesses today, Christians face challenges to the deity of Jesus from all sides. Christians should not be offended to see these significant religions under the antichrist categories or say that the fight is with them.;

Our real spiritual battle is not with flesh and blood, and people are not opponents to be won. Instead, we preach the gospel faithfully from the Word and make disciples of all the nations. We also contend for the faith once and for all delivered to the saints by speaking the truth in love .

Past Popes Have Been Accused

What Does the Bible Say about the Antichrist?

As the English religious radical John Wycliffe put it,

the Pope may obviously be the Antichrist, and yet not just that sole single individual but rather the multitude of popes holding that position along with the cardinals and bishops of the church.

This was the position on the Antichrist adopted by Protestants at the time of the 16th century Reformation. was convinced that he was living in the last days. For him, the Pope fitted all the criteria for the Antichrist. The Pope, he declared, is the true end times Antichrist who has raised himself over and set himself against Christ.

The Pope As The Antichrist

It is important for the Catholic apologist to have a good handle on what Scripture does and does not say regarding the Antichrist because the opponents of the Catholic faith have often depicted the pope as the Antichrist.

This was a psychological necessity for the early Protestant leaders because they were in the process of breaking away from what their contemporaries universally recognized as the authentic Church of Christ, governed by the authentic Vicar of Christ. Since breaking with such a body is inconceivable to any one determined to follow Christs will, it was necessary for Protestant leaders to deny that the Catholic Church and the pope were these things.

The recognition of the Catholic Church as the one Christ established was so stronggiven its centuries of existence, its ubiquity in Europe, and the absence of any plausible rival in tracing its roots back to Christthat it created severe cognitive dissonance that Protestant leaders had to find ways to overcome. If its not the Bride of Christ then what;is;it?;How;can it be explained otherwise? would be logical questions.

They thus came to portray the Church as the Whore of Babylon and the pope as the beast/Antichrist. Only in such a way could breaking away from what everyone recognized as the true Church of Christ be psychologically justified.

How To Identify Antichrists

  • They promote false ideas related to Jesus. For example, those who teach the Trinity or that Jesus is Almighty God actually oppose the teachings of Jesus, who said: The Father is greater than I am.John 14:28.

  • Antichrists reject what Jesus said about how Gods Kingdom operates. For instance, some religious leaders say that Christ works through human governments. Yet, this teaching contradicts Jesus, who said: My Kingdom is no part of this world.John 18:36.

  • They say that Jesus is their Lord, but they do not obey his commands, including the one to preach the good news of the Kingdom.Matthew 28:19, 20; Luke 6:46; Acts 10:42.

Whose Revelation Is It

Who is the Antichrist?

Popular interpretations of Revelation are often forgetful of the fact that this book is The revelation of Jesus Christ . Many people treat it as if it were the revelation of the dragon and his wrath. The sillier teachers of eschatology focus so much of their attention on endless speculations concerning the Antichrist, the mark of the beast, etc., that I truly wonder if they think Revelation is primarily about revealing the satanic.

Two things to say about this: Such assumptions about Revelation treat Satan as the star of end-times speculations, breeding, once again, unnecessary fear in good folks. And , such views are simply wrong: Neither the dragon nor the beast are the stars of the show; thus, they shouldnt be the focus of our obsessions.

To the contrary, the point of Revelation is to reveal and uncover the victory of the Lamb and the victory the Lamb shares with his people. Jesus is the focus. This, quite frankly, is rather old news. In fact, its 2,000-year-old news. Its basic theology. And yet, its ignored.

I suspect, though, that much of the misguided eschatological hype has very little to do with theology per se and much more to do with certain political ambitions that could be obtained by weaponizing key biblical texts for their own endsa sort of neronic/beastly thing to do, really. Such is the politics of our time, though.

He Claims To Be God And Is Worshiped

A strong characteristic is that the Anti-Christ will seek to be worshpped like God is as Paul writes, Dont let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in Gods temple, proclaiming himself to be God .; This Anti-Christ is identified as the man of lawlessness and will not appear until the rebellion occurs .; This man is supposed to come to power during the Tribulation and he will set in the temple of God to proclaim himself as God.

Peter And The Antichrist

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves .

Peter, in his letters, does not speak of one Antichrist but many false prophets. John called false prophets antichrists, but Peter is content to speak of them as false teachers and prophets , focusing on the immediate challenge he and the church faced. As John mentioned, they would introduce heresies, denying Jesus Christ, but their end will be sure judgment, which we see John conclusively articulating in the Book of Revelation.

And then if any man shall say to you, behold, here is Christ; behold, he is here: do not believe. For there will rise up false Christs and false prophets, and they shall show signs and wonders to seduce even the elect. Take you heed therefore; behold I have foretold you all things.

And then that wicked one shall be revealed whom the Lord Jesus shall kill with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming, him, whose coming is according to the working of Satan, in all power, and signs, and lying wonders, and in all seduction of iniquity to them that perish, because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. Therefore God shall send them the operation of error, to believe lying: That all may be judged who have not believed the truth, but have consented to iniquity.

He Is An Earthly Tyrant And Trickster

Who is the Antichrist? What does the Bible say about the ...

By the year 1000, the main outlines of the first of two narratives about the Antichrist was in place thanks to a noble-born Benedictine monk and abbot named Adso of Montier-en-Der who wrote a treatise on the subject.

According to him, the Antichrist would be a Jew from the tribe of Dan and born in Babylon. He would be brought up in all forms of wickedness by magicians and wizards. He would be accepted as the Messiah and ruler by the Jews in Jerusalem. Those Christians whom he could not convert to his cause, he would torture and kill.

He would then rule for seven years before being defeated by the angel Gabriel or Christ and the divine armies, prior to the resurrection of the dead and the Final Judgement.

The Revelation Of The Antichrist

All of this is paving the way for the Antichrist himself to appear and get rid of any pretence of religion. He will do away with God altogether. He will perform signs and wonders to prove to the world once and for all that mankind is self-sufficient.

Mankind is ready to embrace just such a person. Someone who does not interfere with their comfortable lives who will be a force outside themselves to realize their thoughts and dreams of peace and harmony on earth; a world of tolerance, love, and goodwill, without any personal cost to themselves. And the Antichrist will be able to accomplish this.

The name of Antichrist has been synonymous with evil down through the ages, but the truth is that when he is finally revealed, the majority of people will not recognize him as the Antichrist. He will not appear repellent; on the contrary, he will be someone who is talented, and ambitious to solve the worlds problems. He will advance what is already in the process of becoming a reality; that the world can become a paradise of mans own making, without God. The world will believe that with the Antichrist at the helm, mankind can accomplish anything.

Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.;Revelation 13:6.

When that happens then Satan will finally have what he has always wanted. He will be seen as equal to God. He will have control of a world that has no need for God.

Summary Of The Old Testament

The Old Testament strangely introduces the Antichrist. Its hard to be convinced of Antichrists coming from the Old Testament. We should honestly state that any confidence in the theme of Antichrist in the Old Testament comes from the New. Be careful not to be too dogmatic on what are some very cryptic verses.

How Can We Be Aware Of The Antichrist Or False Prophets

The Bible warns us that many false prophets and antichrists will come, before the False Prophet and the Antichrist step onto the scene. So how can we recognize these types of people?

According to this Crosswalk article, a false prophet will not consult the Bible first, “True teachers will reach for the Bible first, second, and always. They may use other sources of information to help explain what Scripture reveals, but the foundation of their message is always built upon Thus says the Lord. If you start hearing more from other sources than Gods Word, you may need to hit the door.”

Secondly, even if they do read the Bible, they may cherry-pick. They may mention Jesus or the Gospel as a sprinkled-in flavor on occasion, but they twist the words of Scripture to fit an eisegetical standpoint they want to make. If someone plucks certain verses but throws out the rest, you’ve likely found a false prophet.

Thirdly, a true teacher will seek after God. No pastor or Christian influencer can claim perfection. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God. But does this person appear to be puffed up with pride. Instead of love, joy, peace, patience, etc., do they choose hate, anger, division, etc.?;

Finally, do they encourage you to live in sin, indulge in it? A true teacher consults Scripture first and shuns evil. A person of darkness, on the other hand, will delight in evil works and will tell you to “do you.” Even when “doing you” is contrary to what Scripture says.

Johns Lessons About Antichrists

What does the Bible say about the Antichrist?

John teaches us that believers always ought to be on guard against the many antichrists that rise up to deceive; they are real, numerous in number, and pernicious: even now many antichrists have appeared . Note how he teaches that these antichrists have been around since the early church .

Believers can detect these antichrists, as John reveals, through their deceptive teaching. Though their teaching has some resemblance to the truth, it sufficiently perverts the Gospel to keep us from saving faith.

These many deceivers are aptly named antichrists because they do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh . The early church faced the Gospel-denying cult called Gnostics because of their assumptions from Greek philosophy , denying God could take on flesh. They denied Jesus Christ was God, became human, suffered, and died for mankind. Gnosticism took on various forms, but though they still claimed Christ as the Redeemer, they distorted the Gospel by teaching that the Spirit came upon a man named Jesus but left him before the cross.

The Gnostics denied the incarnation of God in Jesus. John very clearly warned that the developing cult would spread false thought and belief. The Gospel requires faith in Gods Son, His Servant , to die for our sins. So this cult, though seemingly respectful of Gods holinessunattached to human fleshwas false and deceptive.
