Life Group Personal View: What Does The Bible Say About Peace

What is Peace | Bible Devotion part 4

Recently during my Lifegroup meeting, the question was asked, when you are meditating about God what do you see, hear, and feel?

I must say one of the things for me would have to be envisioning Jesus welcoming me at Heavens gate wrapping his arms around me saying

Well Done my Good and Faithful Servant

CAN YOU SENSE GODS PEACE IN THIS TOO?

You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You Because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3

I can feel even now such a sweet peace about it! I can not describe the feeling I have and do it justice. This morning as I was getting ready for work a song came on Spotify App that I havent heard before.

I started swaying back and forth in a dance with my Savior and My Goodness beloved I started envisioning that and I felt the Holy Spirits presence so strong within me and I long for that day to be a reality.

Another mentioned while praying to God its as if hes sheltering them from all sides.

Prayers That Encourage Peace Be Still

1. A Prayer to Hide Yourself in Him:;

In Psalm 32:7, David found peace as he prayed You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Colossians 3:3 teaches that we have died and our life is now hidden with Christ in God. Oswald Chambers said, Your life is hidden with Christ in God and the peace of Jesus Christ that cannot be disturbed has been imparted to you.;

Lord, You are my hiding place; You will protect me and surround me with songs of deliverance. Help me to hide myself in You so that fear cannot touch me, worry cannot distract me, and anxiety cannot plague me.

2. A Prayer to Quiet Your Heart:;

In Psalm 131:2 , David sang: Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child with his mother, Like a weaned child is my soul within me.;

Lord, quiet my soul and make me like a baby, content to lean against its mother, knowing You are the One who shields me, protects me, and comforts me, regardless of what is happening around me.;

3. A Prayer to Stop Worrying:;

Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us to worry about nothing and pray about everything in order to usher Gods peace into our lives.;

4. A Prayer to Remember Gods Protection:;

Isaiah 43:1-3 is a beautiful picture of Gods comfort, provision, and protection in the midst of troubling circumstances. Make it your personal prayer:

Putting It All Together

The peace of God is different from the peace of the world. Biblical peace is more than just the absence of conflict; it is taking action to restore a broken situation. Its more than a state of inner tranquility; its a state of wholeness and completeness.

Biblical peace is not something we can create on our own; it is a fruit of the Spirit. God is the source of peace, and one of His names is Yahweh Shalom , which means the LORD Is Peace. Jesus is the prince of peace , and He gives us peace in three ways.

The Meek Will Enjoy Peace And Prosperity

A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Jesus alludes to Psalm 37 in the Sermon on the Mount when He tells His listeners that the meek will inherit the earth. These words from Psalm 37 help drive home the fact that peace isn’t something you take by force. On the contrary, it’s a byproduct of living a certain kind of life. In the world’s eyes, the idea that the meek will be the ultimate winners seems preposterousbut not in God’s economy.

Peace In The New Testament

In the New Testament, peace means inner tranquillity for those who follow Christ. That type of peace is a combination of inward satisfaction, hope, trust, and gentle quietness in the mind and spirit no matter what is going on externally.

Just like in the Old Testament, New Testament peace can be brought on only by God.

Peace For The Believer Today

Today, peace is more than flashing the peace sign or wearing a t-shirt with a peace symbol. Perfect peace is also more than the absence of conflict. It is the combination of completeness and wholeness as a direct result of faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. Those who do not experience perfect peace act as though Jesus’ redemption work was not finished on the cross.

Before Jesus left the world, He promised that He was leaving a gift of peace. He said, “I am leaving you with a gift — peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t fragile like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

According to John 14:27, perfect peace is accepting the gift of peace. However, it is not a physical, visible or tangible gift. It is a gift that is much better than the peace the world tends to offer. It is one that soothes the mind and heart in times of trouble and turmoil. The peace that Jesus left to His followers calms internal conflicts and things that vex the spirit. The peace of God moves into the crevices of the heart to eliminate the issues that keep people in bondage.

Those who do not experience perfect peace act as though Jesus’ redemptive work was not finished on the cross.

The original Greek word used here for peace, eiréné, is defined by Strongs Concordance as one, peace, quietness, or rest its a giving over, a blissfully relaxing, much like the carefree sleep of a child who has no worries because all their concerns are handled.

Peace can often be translated with a militaristic perspective in mind, such as the absence of human conflict or battles, but here its used more in reference to a state of mind.

Eiréné is possibly derived from the root word eiró, which means to join, as in a state of harmony and connection.

Seek Peace And Pursue It

Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

In case Israel got the wrong impression and assumed that peace was something they simply received from God, David set them straight. Peace was something they needed to actively pursue. There are behaviors and attitudes that make peace impossible, and unless you turn from them, peace will be rare and fleeting.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

People tend to mistake peacemaking with peacekeeping. Peacekeepers do whatever they can to avoid conflict at all costs, often damaging themselves in order to maintain peace. The end result of avoiding conflict is that we often just make matters worse.

On the other hand, peacemakers will wade through friction and opposition to create peace. Peacemakers are called children of God because like their Father, they’re not content with false peace.

Jesus follows with this statement:;You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. The Lord Causes Peace

When the Lord takes pleasure in anyone’s way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them.

Another common theme throughout the Old Testament is how God used Israel’s enemies to discipline them. The prophets regularly pleaded with Israel to amend their sinful ways so they wouldn’t be overcome by their enemies. Here the writer reiterates this idea by telling the readers that when God is pleased with them, He will encourage their enemies to make peace.

The Wisdom That Comes From Heaven Is Peace

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

James gives us a key to discerning whether something comes from God. Wisdom that comes from God is pure and peace loving. This means that if we’re considering a path that will lead to a moral lapse or causes unnecessary division, it isn’t from God. The wisdom from God puts others first.
