Moral Arguments Against Abortion

Pro-life advocates counter each of these claims with their own ethical arguments.

First, they assert that a fetus is a human life and should be granted the full protection of the law.

The fetus carries its parents genetic code and is a distinct person. It does not yet possess self-consciousness, reasoning ability, or moral awareness , but neither do newborns or young children. As this is the central issue of the debate, well say more about it in a moment.

Second, most pro-life advocates are willing to permit abortion in cases of rape or incest or to protect the life of the mother.

Since such cases typically account for only one to four percent of abortions performed, limiting abortion to these conditions would prevent the vast majority of abortions occurring in America.

Third, pro-life advocates agree that all children should be wanted, so they argue strongly for adoption as an alternative to abortion.

They also assert that an unwanted child would rather live than die. By pro-choice logic, it would be possible to argue for infanticide and all forms of euthanasia as well as abortion.

Fourth, pro-life supporters do not see abortion legislation as an intrusion into areas of private morality.

Protecting the rights of the individual is the states first responsibility. No moral state can overlook murder, whatever the personal opinions of those who commit it. The state is especially obligated to protect the rights of those who cannot defend themselves.

Life Begins At Conception

While some argue that theres no way to know when life begins, advancements in technology and medicine say otherwise. Several obstetric tools produce evidence that life begins at conception. Furthermore, research into the moment of conception has revealed some significant hints at the exact moment of lifes beginning.

Ultrasound Technology

While ultrasound technology was first applied to the field of medicine by Ian Donald in 1956, the wider use of ultrasound for viewing the preborn didnt occur until the 1970s.

Notably, the greatest revelations of preborn life via ultrasound came around the ruling of the famous Supreme court case, Roe vs. Wade .

The first episode of See Life 2021, The Truth About Life, takes a deeper look at life issues.

Ultrasound technology has improved and evolved exponentially since the beginning. Now, life in the womb is detectable as early as 8 to 12 days post-conception. Additionally, evidence of preborn life can now be viewed through 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasounds.

Embryology and Genetics

According to studies in Embryology, a developing embryo contains unchanging genetic information for the life it contains. Consequently, a full-grown adult contains the same genetic blueprint as they did as a developing embryo. Knowing this, we can reason that, genetically speaking, life begins at conception.

The Mysterious Light

When Does Human Life Begin

Does Life Begin At First Breath or Conception? What Does The Bible Say About Abortion?

God views human life as beginning at conception. In his Word, the Bible, God consistently portrays an unborn child as a distinct person. Consider some examples indicating that God does not draw a distinction between the life of a baby in the womb and one that has been born.

  • Under divine inspiration, King David said to God: Your eyes even saw me as an embryo. God considered David to be a person even before he was born.

  • Additionally, God knew that he would have a special purpose for the prophet Jeremiah before Jeremiahs birth. God said to him: Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I sanctified you. I made you a prophet to the nations.Jeremiah 1:5.

  • The Bible writer Luke, a physician, used the same Greek word to describe an unborn baby as he did to describe a newborn baby.Luke 1:41 2:12, 16.

Moral Arguments For Abortion

Pro-choice advocates make five basic claims:

  • No one can say when a fetus becomes a person, so the mother is the most appropriate person to make decisions regarding it.
  • Abortion must be protected so a woman who is the victim of rape or incest does not have to bear a child resulting from such an attack.
  • No unwanted child should be brought into the world.
  • The state has no right to legislate personal morality.
  • A woman must be permitted to make pregnancy decisions in light of her life circumstances.
  • Many theologians, pastors, and denominational leaders consider these claims to be both biblical and moral.

First, pro-choice proponents argue that a fetus is not legally a person.

They agree with the Supreme Courts finding that the Constitution nowhere grants legal standing to a pre-born life. Only 40 to 50 percent of fetuses survive to become persons in the full sense. A fetus belongs to the mother until it attains personhood and is morally subject to any action she wishes to take with it.

Second, abortion must be protected as an alternative for women who are the victims of rape or incest.

While this number is admittedly small in this country , it is growing in many countries around the world. As many as one in three women may become the victim of such an attack. They must be spared the further trauma of pregnancy and childbirth.

Third, no unwanted children should be brought into the world.

Fourth, the state has no right to legislate our personal moral decisions.

If I Could Just Make My Way In Here

“An individual human life begins at conception when a sperm cell from the father fuses with an egg cell from the mother, to form a new cell, the zygote, the first embryonic stage. The zygote grows and divides into two daughter cells, each of which grows and divides into two grand-daughter cells, and this cell growth/division process continues on, over and over again. The zygote is the start of a biological continuum that automatically grows and develops, passing gradually and sequentially through the stages we call foetus, baby, child, adult, old person and ending eventually in death. The full genetic instructions to guide the development of the continuum, in interaction with its environment, are present in the zygote. Every stage along the continuum is biologically human and each point along the continuum has the full human properties appropriate to that point.”Dr. William Reville, University College Cork, Ireland. Quote from a letter to the Irish Independent.

Guest Column: Life Begins With First Breath

The biblical creation story tells us human life begins with the first breath . The non-biblical claim life commences with conception is contrived and contradicts scripture, history, science, biology, law and fact.

Human conception begins when a large female egg cell is fertilized by a small male spermatozoon cell creating a combined zygote cell that slowly develops into a blastocyst, then into an embryo, then into a fetus, and finally birth as a living and breathing human being after 40 weeks of dependency and development in the mother’s body.

Countless conceived embryos fail to implant or are naturally aborted after conception .

There is no biblical scripture opposing abortion, only passages acknowledging and condoning it .

Anti-abortionists ignore Genesis 2-7 and cite Jeremiah 1:5 . Jeremiah is a hearsay collection of ancient prophesies by unknown authors. The referenced verse is an attempt to concoct divine prophetic authority and nothing more than conjecture. Moreover, it is not about abortion.

The human reproduction process was discovered in the late 19th century by science . It totally discredited deceitful dogma by patriarchal religions claiming the male seed was planted in a female where it alone incubated in the womb until maturity and emergence .

This divisive issue should be democratically decided with a national referendum by secret ballot allowing only women the right to vote.

Catholic Church Clear On When Human Life Begins

Does The Bible Support Abortion? Does Life Begin At First ...

Catholic Church Clear on When Human Life Begins

Most Rev. Glen John Provost, D.D.Bishop of Lake Charles, Louisiana

A serious responsibility of a bishop is to insure the purity of teaching in areas of faith and morals . These teachings must be in conformity with the universal and historic teachings found in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition and defined by the teaching office of the Catholic Church. The beauty of Catholicism rests in part on its ability to be clear.

Recently there has been high-profile press given to arguments concerning when human life begins. I am concerned about clarity and any misrepresentation of consistent Catholic teaching. My remarks are made in response to numerous questions posed to me by good Catholics in our own Diocese of Lake Charles who are confused by glib citations of patristic authorities, such as St. Augustine, that life begins at some other time than conception.

    In response, I would say:

    1. St. Augustine, one of our most revered Fathers, lived and wrote almost 1,500 years ago he did not see the world around him with a scientific perspective as we know it today as with early writers of this and later periods, his concern was the nature of the immortal soul and the human being he approached this question primarily from the perspective of theology and philosophy.

    When Does Life Begin Legally

According to the Judicial Learning Center, Laws protect our general safety, and ensure our rights as citizens against abuses by other people, by organizations, and by the government itself.

Laws are not intended to outline and quantify humanity. However, some laws establish when and which individuals have a claim to certain rights. For example, although a non-resident of the United States is equally as human as a U.S. citizen, a U.S. citizen will have a claim to certain rights that a non-citizen will not.

But its a good thing that law does not determine life! If this were the case, our nation would not have accomplished great historic feats like the abolition of slavery and womens suffrage.

Had we let the laws of the early 1800s continue to define that slaves were less human than their owners, we would probably still be practicing slavery today.

Dr. Lile Discusses the difference in law between preserving preborn turtles and preborn children.

Thankfully, the advocating of our forefathers and mothers on behalf of basic human rights influenced our nations laws to serve all humans, not just those of a specific sex or heritage. Even so, our nations laws fall short of fully preserving and protecting all human life equally.

Does The Bible Talk About Abortion

The word abortion appears nowhere in the Bible.

No one in the Bible is ever described as having an abortion, encouraging one, or even dealing with one.

The Bible says nothing which specifically addresses our subject.

And so many have concluded that the issue is not a biblical concern but a private matter. They say that we should be silent where the Bible is silent.

Pro-life advocates counter that by this logic we should be silent regarding the Trinity since the word never appears in Scripture. Or marijuana and cocaine since they are not in a biblical concordance. However, these issues came after the biblical era, while abortion was common in the ancient world. So this argument doesnt seem relevant.

If abortion is a biblical issue, why doesnt the Bible address it specifically?

The answer is simple: the Jewish people and first Christians needed no such guidance. It was an undeniable fact of their faith and culture that abortion was wrong. How do we know?

Consider early statements on the subject.

The Sentences of Pseudo-Phocylides is a book of Jewish wisdom written between 50 BC and AD 50. They state that a woman should not destroy the unborn babe in her belly, nor after its birth throw it before the dogs and vultures as a prey.

The Sibylline Oracles are an ancient work of Jewish theology. They include among the wicked two groups: women who produce abortions and unlawfully cast their offspring away and sorcerers who dispense materials which cause abortions .

Life Begins At Birth It Says So In Genesis

Finally! A letter about abortion that actually makes sense. L.G. Connor of Ellicott City is absolutely right before anyone can take a position on abortion they must first answer the question of when life begins . And that’s an easy one. The Bible tells us in no uncertain terms when life begins. In Genesis, chapter one, God answers that question himself. He forms a figure from the Earth, but it does not become Adam until God “breathes into him the breath of life, and he became man.

Clearly, life begins when you draw your first breath. That is when God places your soul in your body. Your soul enters your body with your first breath and it leaves with your last. The body is just a vessel your being, your humanity, is your immortal soul. That’s what the Bible says, and for the life of me I cannot understand why so many people, especially supposedly religious people, get this wrong. There is no question, no moral ambiguity. Abortion destroys an empty vessel, it does not kill a human being.

That is not to say that a fetus isn’t alive, because it clearly is. So is a cow, or an earthworm, or a tree. However, simply being alive does not make something a human being. Having a soul is what sets us apart from other living things. Otherwise, every farmer and every lumberjack would be a murderer. And so would all of the rest of us who eat living things. Even the hardcore vegans would be murderers since they eat plants and plants are alive too.
