Greek Orthodox Churches In Columbia
- Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox ChurchThis Greek Orthodox church in downtown Columbia was founded in 1936 when Greek immigrants established a community in the South Carolina midlands and began worshiping together. By 1939 members of the small congregation had acquired a frame house for their church services. The church was called Assumption Greek Orthodox Parish by 1942 and became an official member of the Archdiocese of North and South America. The church as well as the Greek community in Columbia grew from this point, requiring the congregation to build a larger house of worship at Sumter and Calhoun Streets in 1949. Once the new church was built, the congregation changed its name to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity.
About The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter
Attending church each Sunday is a respite from fast-paced daily living. Attend church at 2350 White Pine Road to reflect, worship God, strengthen your spiritual connections, and focus on Jesus. Worship with a community of people who are trying to be more Christlike and learn from each other. There are two meetings in a two hour time. The main meeting is called sacrament meeting. This meeting consists of songs, prayers, and sermons given by different members of the congregation and take the sacrament . In addition to sacrament meeting, there are a variety of other classes for both children and adults. Theres something for everyone! Each meet together for a lesson and discussion that are based on a different section of scripture each week.

- Church of the Good ShepherdOne of the oldest churches in Columbia, the Church of the Good Shepherd was organized in 1883. It was originally a mission church of nearby Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. By 1886 it became its own parish. Today the Church of the Good Shepherd describes itself as an Anglo-Catholic parish and belongs to the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina.

- Trinity Episcopal CathedralTrinity Episcopal Cathedral dates back to 1812, when its first congregation gathered to build a small, wooden church on the corner of Columbia’s Gervais and Sumter streets. The church was completed in 1814, but by 1845, well-known architect E. B. White had been commissioned to create a more elegant edifice. White, who modeled Trinity’s new home after England’s Yorkminster Cathedral, also designed the steeple of St Philip’s in Charleston. A wrought iron fence surrounds Trinity’s famous graveyard, where several famous South Carolinian’s are buried.

St Elizabeth the New Martyr Orthodox Church is a parish of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia under the spiritual direction of His Eminence, Metropolitan NICHOLAS of Eastern America and New York and First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. The church is located in West Columbia, South Carolina, which is five minutes west of downtown Columbia.
We are a church for all who are searching for the anchor of a Christian community in our rootless society. Above all, we are a Eucharistic community worshipping the Holy Trinity in spirit and truth as we seek to know God, to be conformed to Christs example of true humanity, and to lead a life filled with all the fullness of God.

#tbt: 10 Of Columbias Historic Churches
One of my favorite things to do when I travel is visiting old churches. You will often find a citys most grandiose, historic architecture in its places of worship. They are a window into a citys past often situated in the middle of downtown on a busy street corner juxtaposed by modern infrastructure + office buildings.
Columbias many historic churches are visual strongholds of their rich histories of community + fellowship. Read about ten of our favorites below then click here to see a map of where they are and take a driving tour. Shoutout to reader Zara for creating the map.

Fun fact: This churchwas first organized in a sword factory on Wayne St. In 1921, the Bethel Society moved to a blacksmiths shop on the corner of Sumter + Hampton St., where a larger framework was built to house its growing congregation. The structure was designed by John Anderson Lankford who was one of the first black registered architects in the U.S. In 1995, the church moved to their current location. The Renaissance Foundation is attempting to turn the old location on Sumter St. into a civil rights museum with the help of City Council.
