Biblical Accounts Of The Incarnation

What does the Incarnation mean? – T& C Bible Study Live

The incarnation is referred to several times in the Gospels, in particular the Gospels of Matthew, Luke and John.

The Gospel of Matthew tells Christians about the miraculous conception of Jesus and describes the events leading to his birth.

The Gospel of Luke tells Christians of the miraculous birth of John the Baptist. It also describes the journey Mary and Joseph took from Nazareth, where they lived, to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.

The Gospel of John is less like a story and takes a more theological approach. At the start of this Gospel, Jesus is identified as the Word of God: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God .

After identifying the Word as the second person of the Trinity, John highlights the human nature of Jesus, emphasising that Jesus was God in human form. John states that, The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us .

Additionally, there is an important passage in 1 Timothy that highlights Jesus role as both God and human:

quote Jesus appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by the angels, was preached among nations, was believed on in the world, and was taken up in glory.1 Timothy 3:16

This passage reminds Christians of the various aspects of Jesus nature.

In Jesus, humans can see what God is like. By becoming incarnate, God came closer to human understanding. Jesus acted as a messenger who was able to reconnect humanity to Gods teachings.

The Importance Of The Incarnation

The idea of a god involving himself in the affairs of men by coming to the earth is not a novel one. In the Greek culture of New Testament times there were numerous instances in which the gods were said to have manifested themselves in human flesh.1 In our own times there are numerous examples of super-beings who have intervened in human history. In the movie E.T. this being was far from human. Characters like the Bionic Man and the Bionic Woman are more human than divine. Superman and Wonder Woman are more other worldly and more closely approximate the Greek heroes.

If we are to properly appreciate the mystery of the incarnation, we must first come to recognize the importance of the coming of our Lord as God incarnate. For this reason I have chosen to devote this first message on the incarnation to the subject of the importance of the incarnation. Let us consider the reasons why it the doctrine of the incarnation is vital to every one of us.

The Doctrine of the Incarnation Should be the Focus of a Christian Celebration of Christmas.

The Doctrine of the Incarnation is Not Only Neglected by Christians Today, It is Under Attack By Those Who Would Call Themselves Christians.

Michael Goulder astonishingly attributes belief in the deity of Christ to the supposed influence of Simon Magus on the Church, and also to the psychological impact of Peters experience of the resurrection, and the subsequent power of hysteria within a small community.6

Money is like fire, an element as little troubled by moralizing as earth, air and water. Men can employ it as a tool or they can dance around it as if it were the incarnation of a god. Money votes socialist or monarchist, finds a profit in pornography or translations from the Bible, commissions Rembrandt and underwrites the technology of Auschwitz. It acquires its meaning from the uses to which it is put.

We have existed before our human incarnation, and we will still exist after. We are immortal pure conscious energy.

Bible Doctrine 1,8 The Incarnation APOSTOLIC INFORMATION ...

After understanding what incarnation is, maybe some people will ask how to be certain about the incarnate God so as to welcome the Lord when hearing someone testifying that the Lord Jesus has returned in the flesh. Gods words tell us, It is not difficult to inquire into such a thing, but it requires each of us to know this one truth: He who is God incarnate shall possess the essence of God, and He who is God incarnate shall possess the expression of God. Since God becomes flesh, He shall bring forth the work He intends to do, and since God becomes flesh, He shall express what He is, and shall be able to bring the truth to man, bestow life upon him, and point the way for him. Flesh that does not have the essence of God is decidedly not the incarnate God of this there is no doubt. If man intends to inquire into whether it is Gods incarnate flesh, then he must corroborate this from the disposition He expresses and the words He speaks. Which is to say, to corroborate whether or not it is Gods incarnate flesh, and whether or not it is the true way, one must discriminate on the basis of His essence. And so, in determining whether it is the flesh of God incarnate, the key lies in His essence , rather than external appearance. If man scrutinizes only His external appearance, and as a result overlooks His essence, this shows that man is benighted and ignorant.

    The Incarnation Is Mysterious

The Scriptures do not give us answers to all of our questions. Some things remain mysterious. The secret things belong to the Lord our God, Moses wrote, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever .

Answering how it could be that one person could be both fully God and fully man is not a question that the Scriptures focus on. The early church fathers preserved this mystery at the Council of Chalcedon when they wrote that Jesus is recognized in two natures , without confusion, without change, without division, without separation the distinction of natures being in no way annulled by union, but rather the characteristics of each nature being preserved and coming together to form one person and subsistence, not as parted or separated into two persons but one and the same Son and Only-begotten God the Word, Lord Jesus Christ.

Why Is It Important To Know Who Jesus Is

However, knowing the identity of Jesus is critical. It is important for us to get the identity of Jesus right otherwise we will relate to Him in the wrong way. 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

    The Purposes Of The Incarnation

Perhaps the best way to underscore the importance of the doctrine of the incarnation is to consider the price for putting it aside. The Bible reveals a number of purposes for the incarnation of our Lord. When we do away with the incarnation, these purposes will not be realized. Consider with me the consequences of doing away with the truth of God incarnate.

    To Reveal God To Men

In the past, God had revealed Himself through His works , His world , and His word . In the coming of Christ, God was revealed in the person of Jesus Christ:

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power .

For the law was given through Moses grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No man has seen God at any time the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him .

Our Lord can therefore say without any hesitation, He who has seen Me has seen the Father . And not only does the Lord Jesus reveal the Father to men, He also reveals men for what they are in Gods sight:

Before, God had revealed His standard of righteousness in precept and in principle, but in Christ that standard was revealed in person. The measure of a man is the measure of this Man .

Things You Should Know About The Incarnation

At the heart of Christianity and the gospel is the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Apart from the Word becoming flesh and the incarnate Son of God living and dying in our place as our Savior, there is no salvation. Apart from the coming of the eternal Son, his taking on human nature and acting as our covenant representative, there is no hope for the world.

It is appropriate at Christmas to think more deeply about the incarnation. Here are 10 things we should grasp.

    1. The person or active subject of the incarnation is the eternal Son.

John 1:14 is clear: The Word became flesh. In other words, it was the Son from eternity who became incarnate, not the divine nature. The Son, who is in eternal relation to the Father and Spirit, willingly humbled himself and chose to assume a human nature in obedience to his Father and for our salvation .

    2. As the eternal Son, the second person of the triune Godhead, he is the full image and expression of the Father and is thus fully God.

Along with the Father and Spirit, the Son fully and equally shares the divine nature. As the image and exact correspondence of the Father , the Son is fully God. All of Gods perfections and attributes are his since Christ is God the Son . As the Son, he participates in the divine rule, receives divine worship, and does all divine works as the Son .

    4. The incarnation is an act of addition, not subtraction.

The Importance Of The Principle Of Incarnation

    Pin on Featured Movie Clips

Incarnation is not just a debate about something which took place 2,000 years ago in history. The issues at hand in the incarnation of our Lord are matters of principle which have very practical ramifications. The broader issue of the incarnation is the relationship between the divine and the human, between the sovereign working of God and the human responsibility of man.

Let me attempt to illustrate what I mean by referring to the issue of the inspiration and authority of the Scriptures. The real question lying behind the issue of the inspiration and infallibility of the Scriptures is whether anything which is dependent upon human participation can be said to be divine and without error. To deny the incarnation is to deny the deity or the humanity of our Lord. Such a denial is to conclude that it is impossible for our Lord to be both undiminished deity and sinless humanity at the same time. To conclude this about the living Word is to necessitate doing so with the written word.

  • Six Key Passages About The Incarnation

August 15, 2018 By Rob Phillips

This is the fourth in a series of articles on the Incarnation.

In previous articles, we explored how these two natures work together as the eternal Son of God adds sinless humanity to His deity via the miracle of the virgin birth. And we summarized 10 essential truths about the Incarnation.

Now, lets look at six key passages of Scripture that help us understand what it means when the apostle John writes, the Word became flesh.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The eternal Son of God always had a divine nature. He was with God in the beginning, and John makes it clear He was God . In the Incarnation, He added a real human nature and thus became both God and man.

The word dwelt may be translated as tabernacled. Just as the divine presence was with ancient Israelites in the pillar of cloud and fire, as well as in the tabernacle and the temple, Yahweh now manifested Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, the God-Man.

Rom. 1:3-4 concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh and was appointed to be the powerful Son of God according to the Spirit of holiness by the resurrection of the dead.

Rom. 9:5 The ancestors are theirs , and from them, by physical descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, praised forever. Amen.

What Does It Mean That Jesus Is Savior

As stated above, the meaning of Jesus is that God Saves. Jesus is also given the title Christ or Messiah. This specific title means Savior or Anointed One. Jesus does not directly mean Savior. But, indirectly it is clear that He is the Savior, being anointed of the Father for this very purpose of salvation.

    The Incarnation Fulfills Prophecy

Does the incarnation mean that God changed? If not, why?

The incarnation wasnt random or accidental. It was predicted in the Old Testament and in accordance with Gods eternal plan. Perhaps the clearest text predicting the Messiah would be both human and God is Isaiah 9:6: To us a child is born, to us a son is given and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

In this verse, Isaiah sees a son that is to be born, and yet he is no ordinary son. His extraordinary names Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace point to his deity. And taken together the son being born and his names point to him being the God-man, Jesus Christ.

The Lord Has Returned In The Flesh

Today, across the whole world, only The Church of Almighty God is openly testifying that the Lord Jesus has returned already as the incarnated Almighty God. Almighty God incarnate looks like an ordinary, normal person from the outside, but He possesses a divine essence, and can express the truth and do the work of God Himself. If we study Almighty Gods work of the last days, we will know that Almighty God has expressed millions of words, and has expressed the truth and done the work of judgment beginning with the house of God on the foundation of the Lord Jesus work of redemption to utterly save and purify man. This fulfills the Lord Jesus prophecies, I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth . And if any man hear My words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejects Me, and receives not My words, has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day . Sanctify them through Your truth: Your word is truth . And Revelation 22:14 prophesies, Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
