Proverb For The Day : 7
Do not be wise in your own eyes, fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
The fourth wise saying of this chapter, like the others, is a couplet of two verses with both commands and promises. This one offers three commands and one promise.
The first command, Do not be wise in your own eyes is similar to lean not on your own understanding . We desperately need to stop thinking we have all the answers.
Fear the LORD, the second command, is the key concept of Proverbs introduced in chapter 1 and similar to trust in the LORD with all your heart . Fearing the LORD is seeing God as He really is. He does have all the answersand the power to bring all of it to pass.
The third command is to shun evil. This is the basis of a popular phrase in recovery having a constant commitment to just do the next right thing.
The promise of this wise saying is health and nourishment for my physical well-being. The concept here is that thinking right and making appropriate commitments helps us get and stay healthier.

Lean Not On Your Own Understanding Proverbs : 5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. ~Proverbs 3:5-6
This passage is among the most quoted or referenced when we want to explain away something we dont understand. And thats a good thing as long as we dont just say the words without applying them to our lives.
To lean not on your own understanding is really just another way of saying we need to live by faith.
Abraham was leaning not on his own understanding when he and Isaac were walking up the mountain to offer a sacrifice to the LORD.
Daniel was leaning not on his own understanding when he was being led to the pit to spend the night with some hungry lions.

It is important to acknowledge the pain within the situation and avoid minimizing the emotional stress.

What does Proverbs 3:5-6 mean is that we are to trust God with all our hearts and not depend on what we know . At all times, include God in everything you do, and this way, you give Him a chance to keep you on the right track. You may not always know what lies ahead.
The general application of these verses is that in any given situation, trust Our Lord because He knows what to do. You dont always know what to do, and relying on your wisdom or intelligence will mislead you. When you involve God in every action step you take to rectify a situation, you will arrive at the right solution.

A Trust In The Lord With All Your Heart Meaning
The world has taught us that we are very capable of handling anything that comes our way. Many of the methods dont include the power of God , but that of man. As a child of God, put your trust in Him instead of the many ways of the world .
When you trust in God with all your heart, it means that you leave no room for doubt. You believe what He says because you know He is always right and will never deceive you. God sees the bigger picture and therefore knows what lies ahead of you and what you dont see. Trust in God in every situation and relationship in your life.
Trusting God comes naturally when you know Him and how He works. Its hard to trust someone you dont know and cant rely on. God is trustworthy and faithful and has proven Himself throughout the Bible. When you spend time to read the scriptures, you will know God and His ways and be familiar with His will.
God expects that you will trust Him with all your heart, not just a part of it . When we dont trust Him wholeheartedly, we question His abilities and tuck in a Plan B, just in case He doesnt come through. Put your complete trust in God knowing He wont let you down.
In All Your Ways Submit To Him And He Will Make Your Paths Straight
In all things, Solomon learned to put his trust in God, not in himself, not in others, and not in his experience, wisdom, strength, authority, or wealth, which could easily be shaken or taken away .
For in everything, Solomon leaned on the rock of his salvation, and that of his father. In doing so, he was never disappointed.
As Solomon concluded in life, Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe . Therefore, do not be wise in your own eyes fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones .
It may take a lifetime to develop this kind of trust, but as Solomon discovered, its well worth the effort.

Does Proverbs : 5 Teach That We Should Blindly Trust God
I want to address the idea for a moment of blind trust. In reality we dont really trust God blindly. One of the reasons is because God has given us a track record in his word. We have historical evidence we can rely upon from his word. There is evidence from the testimony of others trusting God, and he has proven himself to be faithful.
Chances are you also have personal evidence you have seen in your own life. When you combine these things, you can be confident in trusting God because you have a history of his faithfulness. This history does not have to be your own, which is why you have the word and the testimony of others. You can trust God because he has proven to be trustworthy. Each of these moments of God proving himself to be faithful become the building blocks with which you move to a higher level of trust. Not blindly, but with plenty of evidence.
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful .
Everyday of your life will be filled with decisions. It should be comforting and reassuring that you can depend on God for your decision making. What is also comforting and probably even more important is that God wants you to lean on him. Think of it like this. You can trust in the one who is all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, who holds all wisdom, or you can depend on your own thinking.
When those are the two options I will gladly put aside my own understanding and trust in the Lord. I pray you would do the same.
No One Said It Would Be Easy
It wasnt easy for Joseph to face the fact that his brothers hated him enough to kill him, but he endured all that went with their foiled plot, believing God was directing him where he needed to go.
It wasnt easy for Peter and other early Christians to be ridiculed, beaten, thrown in jail, and killed because of their faith. But they knew that Jesus meant what he said when he told them to teach the Gospel to all nations and they werent about to let Him down.
Vera, Katy, and countless other women know that leaning on the LORD is the only way they can make it through each day without the children they have lost or long for but will not have. They lean on him for strength, courage, comfort, and hope for whatever he will do to make their hearts and minds capable of being joyful in him.
You can, too. Yes, you can. You simply have to to do so.
In Jesus Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addresses this situation in Matthew 6:31-34 and again in Matthew 7:9-11. Lets look at the first passage now
Therefore do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For after all these things the Gentiles seek. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Many times we try to figure things out in a situation yet we dont always have all the information. The second part of verse 5 tells us not to depend on our understanding of things because we could be wrong . You may have misinterpreted someone’s words or underestimated a certain danger or threat.

Lord, help me trust you. I confess that I dont always believe that I can. I think I know better than you how my life should go. It feels like you make mistakes. Its too easy to doubt that you have my best in mind. Sometimes I even feel like youve abandoned me. Despite these doubts, somehow still, I always, ultimately trust you.
Help me to see this situation I face in light of the truth that You can be trusted. That what I have been feeling is untrue. Remind me that I can count on you all the time, in every way. Help me to know I can trust you, even when I have a hard time believing it. Help me give my heart more fully over to you. Forgive me for holding parts back from You, or for giving it too easily to other things. I believe that giving you my heart is the very best thing I can do.

Its one thing to acknowledge God. Many people admit there is a God and even believe that God is good. Its another thing to submit to Gods authority, obey His commands, and make God the Lord of ones life.
Note that Solomon uses the word all twice to emphasize complete devotion and surrender. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, he writes, and in all your ways submit/acknowledge Him.
Trust, submission, and surrender involve putting ones complete confidence in the Lord, not oneself, not ones finances, experience, health, authority, or wisdom, and certainly not other leaders or other gods.
Trust means turning to God as the most reliable, capable, and authentic authority and source of personal strength, doing things Gods way instead of our own and placing God on the throne as king and ruler of our life. Even as king over all of Israel, David wrote,

Lean Not Unto Thine Own Understanding
âAnd with all thy getting get understanding,â or, said another way, âTrust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understandingâ .
I have personally observed the heartbreak and personal havoc wrought upon those whose focus is on worldly âgettingâ and not on the Lordâs âunderstanding.â It seems that those who lean unto their own understanding or rely on the arm of the flesh are more likely to develop a disproportionate focus or obsession for material gain, prestige, power, and position. But keeping the âgettingâ in accordance with this scriptural guidance of âunderstandingâ will temper your temporal appetite. It will allow the proper context for your activities as a productive member of society and of the Lordâs kingdom.
As a young student full of aspiration, I remember listening to a respected and successful mentor suggest that we appropriately manage ambitions by following an order of âlearn, earn, serve.â President Gordon B. Hinckley taught a pattern that leads to trusting the Lord and relying on Him rather than on ourselves. He said: âEach of us has a fourfold responsibility. First, we have a responsibility to our families. Second, we have a responsibility to our employers. Third, we have a responsibility to the Lordâs work. Fourth, we have a responsibility to ourselves.â
