Praying To Mary – What Does The Bible Say?

Like other Christians, Catholics believe Jesus is a divine person, the Son of God. They believe that because of his love for all people, he died so that all people will live forever in heaven. The Catholic Church also recognizes the Trinity that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are together the only God.

How Old Was Virgin Mary When She Had Jesus

While unproven, some apocryphal accounts state that at the time of her betrothal to Joseph, Mary was 1214 years old. According to ancient Jewish custom, Mary could have been betrothed at about 12. Hyppolitus of Thebes says that Mary lived for 11 years after the death of her son Jesus, dying in 41 AD.

Why Is John 3/16 The Most Famous Verse In The Bible

On the surface, one of the reasons John 3:16 has become so popular is that it represents a simple summary of a profound truth. In short, God loves the world, including people such as you and me. He wanted to save the world so desperately that He became part of the world in the form of a man Jesus Christ.

What Does Scripture Say About The Rosary

Does the Bible refer to the Rosary? The answer is no! The concept of praying the Rosary, a string of beads, is never mentioned in Scripture because it is a human invention. It is not Biblical and it is not of God. The Roman Catholics defend the prayer of the Rosary by showing that some phrases can be found in the Bible, but most of the Hail Mary prayer and Hail Holy Queen prayer cannot be found in the Bible. In fact, parts of the prayers are not only unbiblical they are absolutely heretical.

Giving The Virgin Mary A Place In Our Hearts

the ROSARY [no where in the bible does God say to pray to ...

I need to be very clear again. No, I am not telling anyone to worship Mary. That being said, the mother of God needs to have a special place in our hearts. She set an example of obedience each of us needs to follow. She was obedient to death, the death of her Son.

Because God is sovereign, Im sure He would have figured something out if Mary wouldnt have gone along. Still, God didnt have to. The Virgin Mary took on whatever role God had for her to play. This would have been much more difficult than we realize. She was betrothed to be married. Becoming pregnant all of a sudden would have thrown a wrench in the bag.

She was younger than a lot of people realize. The majority of biblical scholars and commentators put her between the ages of 13 15 at the time of the Annunciation. Think about this for just a second. God used a young teenage girl to play a significant part in changing the history of the world. The Virgin Mary played a role in salvation for every one of us. Yes, she deserves a very special place in our hearts. Right next to her Son.

Not a place of worship, but one of great honor and love. The majority of grown men today couldnt go through half of what she did before 30. Mary carried the Son of God, gave birth to Him, raised Jesus, and then watched Him be killed. Yes, this is someone we honor.

Why Should I Pray

Prayer develops our relationship with God. If we never speak to our spouse or never listen to anything our spouse might have to say to us, our marriage relationship will quickly deteriorate. It is the same way with God. Prayercommunicating with Godhelps us grow closer and more intimately connected with God.

I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure, just as gold and silver are refined and purified by fire. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘These are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.'”

But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted!

The Lord instructed us to pray. One of the simplest reasons to spend time in prayer is because the Lord taught us to pray. Obedience to God is a natural by-product of discipleship.

“Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!”

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Why Pray To Mary And The Saints When I Can Go Straight To Jesus

When a person is baptized they become part of the mystical body of Christ. A Christian is connected spiritually to other Christians through their baptism. Since Christianity is a communal faith we are suppose to help each other out spiritually as well as physically. The Bible actually tells Christians to pray for one another in James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects Praying for one another is powerful and the prayers of a righteous person are very powerful. What human, other then the God-Man Jesus, is more righteous then Mary? She is full of grace and blessed among women . Mary is our mother Jesus extended her motherhood to all humanity when he was on the cross . What good mother isnt concerned with her children? Mary loves her children and prayers for her children.

How Is Mary Full Of Grace

We see in that same verse that Gabriel calls Mary highly favored . Another translation we might see is full of grace. That means that the first part of the Hail Mary, Hail Mary, full of grace, is straight from the Bible. The word Gabriel uses in Greek is kecharitomene, from a verb meaning to give grace. Here a little Greek lesson is in order. This is a perfect passive participle. Passive means that something is done to the person. So Mary is not giving grace to someone else. Instead, she is given grace. The perfect tense denotes past action. In Greek, there are several past tenses. The perfect tense denotes past action with continuing effects in the present. So what Gabriel is saying to Mary is that she was given grace in the past and the grace she was given continues with her to the present time.

This is where Catholics find biblical evidence for the Immaculate Conception. Mary is uniquely graced from the very beginning of her life and maintains that grace throughout her entire life.

We also see in Luke 1:42 Elizabeth addresses Mary, saying, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Again, this is directly found in the Hail Mary. It is becoming clear that the Hail Mary does not contradict the Gospel message. Instead, it is a profoundly biblical prayer.

Reasons You Should Not Pray To Mary

What Does the Bible Say about Praying to Mary and the Saints?

Luke 1:26-38 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeths pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you! 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 Dont be afraid, Mary, the angel told her, for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever his Kingdom will never end! 34 Mary asked the angel, But how can this happen? I am a virgin. 35 The angel replied, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 Whats more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For the word of God will never fail. 38 Mary responded, I am the Lords servant. May everything you have said about me come true. And then the angel left her.

Why Pray To Mary And The Saints

What Does the Bible Say About Prayer?

Not having been raised Catholic, I can relate to the question that is often asked, Why do Catholics pray to Mary? A good way to respond to someone asking that question is to first explain the Catholic understanding of the Communion of Saints.

People questioning the idea of praying to a saint perceive that those who are dead in Christ are disconnected from those on earth, so to pray to someone who is dead seems like a useless proposition. Non-Catholics are quick to pray for one another, but to pray for the dead or ask the intercession of those who are dead is not only foreign, its a bit suspect.

So in order to explain why we pray to Mary and the saints, we need to explain that there is a connection between the Body of Christ that is already in heaven and those who are still on earth. Though a person is no longer living on earth, that does not mean they are not living. We have a relationship with those who are living in heaven, and that during the Mass heaven and earth connect.

Once that difference is explained, you can make the connection that praying to Mary or the saints is like asking a friend here on earth to pray for you. Catholics also believe that a saint in heaven has a better connection to Christ, since they are right there with him.

However, there are some verses in Revelation that talk about the prayers of the saints. For example, Revelation 5:8:

And Revelation 8:3-4:

The Largest Denomination Of Christendom Teaches Its Members To Pray To Mary As A Mediatrix But Does Jesus Christ Want Us To Pray To His Physical Mother

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

This is a daily prayer, often called the Hail Mary, repeated by millions of Roman Catholics around the world. It is a part of a larger sequence of devotions called the rosary, which derives its name from a Latin word meaning a wreath or garland of roses. According to tradition, whenever it is recited, Marys head is crowned with a wreath of flowers in heaven.

The full rosary consists of more than 200 Hail Marys and 20 Our Fathers interspersed between other statements and prayers. Traditionally, devotees pray one fourth of this each day, including five of the 20 mysteries.

Catholics keep track of where they are in this litany through a string of beads. Many popes have endorsed the practice, as did Mary herselfwho is said to have appeared to three children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. According to the children, one of her consistent messages throughout six separate apparitions was the need for humanity to recite the rosary daily to bring world peace.

Is It Okay For Christians To Pray To Mary

The Bible is clear that Marys unique position as the mother of Jesus did not give her any more access to God than another believer in Christ is given. Therefore, Mary is not worthy of receiving prayers from Christians. Jesus addressed this in Luke 11 by emphasizing that its more blessed to be a follower of Christ than to be the mother of Christ.

Why Do Catholics Pray To Mary

Praying to Mary – A Biblical Defense

In the Roman Catholic church, Mary is seen as a mediator in her own right and therefore, worthy of receiving prayers from Christians.

Veneration of Mary and the practice of praying to her is supported by the Roman Catholic doctrine of Assumption, which holds that after she died, Mary was taken up into heaven like Jesus physically and spiritually. This was a popular idea since before the Middle Ages, but not made official dogma in the Catholic Church until Pope Pius XII declared it so in 1950.

Such unique devotion to Mary is also supported by the Roman Catholic doctrine of Immaculate Conception, which refers to Marys conception, not Jesuss conception. The doctrine states that as the mother of God incarnate, she was without the stain of original sin from her own conception. Pope Pius IX authorized this idea as official church doctrine in 1854.

To Whom Should We Pray

There is no biblical teaching at all that states we are to pray to those who once were alive on earth and are now in heaven. Revelation, the same book used by them to justify their position says the following:

And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said to me, Do not do that I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy,.

John wants to bow the knee and worship the angel. But the angel tells him not to do that because he is a fellow-creature. If the angel says that he is a fellow-creature like John and that John is not to bow to him, then neither should anyone else bow to an angel or any creature so as to offer worship. Worship includes prayer. Therefore, no one should pray to any created thing.
