Does The Bible Mention Transgender

What The Fall Tells Us

What does the Bible say about transgender people?

Of course, we dont live in the perfect world those first humans did. We live in a world that is broken by sin and that brokenness extends to our bodies, and even to our hearts and their desires. Thats why Peter says to Christians:

Dear friends . . . abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.

Some of our desires, or feelings, tell us to do things, or that we are things, which are actually opposed to our soul to our good, both now and eternally. So we have to work out which of our desires to feed, because theyre good and which to fight, because theyre actually warring against us. And the way to do that is not to listen to our strongest desires but to Gods Word, which is always right.

And Gods Word says that our gender is given to us by God, that it matches the sex that he built our body to have, and that therefore our gender is not changeable.

Transgender: Truth And Compassion

Imagine a woman telling you, Im transgender. Please call me Michael. Its obvious shes female, but shes asking you to call her by a mans name. What do you do?

Many people today reject the notion that gender is a fixed trait based on biology. Rather, they believe gender is a flexible trait based on society. As feminist and social theorist Simone de Beauvoir wrote, One is not born, but rather becomes, woman.1 Anatomy, therefore, is not destiny. One can choose what gender one wants to be.

Though this sounds counterintuitive, the culture is buying it. They are sympathetic to the plight of transgender people. They believe Michael is a man trapped in a womans body and theyre willing to accommodate the transgender perception.

Recently, a woman complained to the management of a fitness gym after she was startled to see a man in the womens locker room. The public relations department responded by saying, Guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.2 In other words, if youre a man but believe youre a woman, you can use the womens locker room. Concerned by the gyms policy, the woman warned other women at the gym about the transgender person. Management asked her to stop. When she refused, the gym cancelled her membership.

What If Im A Christian Experiencing Gender Dysphoria

Spencer’s StorySpencer is a 19-year-old college freshman who has been in church all his life. One Tuesday morning he called his pastor in tears. I dont understand why these thoughts wont leave. I cant eat, I cant sleep, and my grades are already shot. I dont want to be trans, but its on my mind 24/7. Im not sure how much longer I can fight this.

Your story and experiences are important and worthy of being heard and respected as you bravely share them, but theyre also no doubt challenging. Dont go this alone or under the sickening burden of shame that the enemy of our souls tries to heap on us . Find a safe place to slowly and patiently unwind your story. Know the truth that you are loved deeply and unconditionally even as you face your feelings and questions. Christ is a redeemer and healer of our bodies, minds, and spirits.

As you obediently embark on this path with Jesus, you will need a support team with resources at each of these three levels:

  • Body: a trustworthy, Christian physician who can address any physical problems such as brain chemistry, depression, anxiety, or endocrine problems.
  • Mind: a professional Christian counselor who can help you find healing from any trauma you may have experienced.
  • Spirit: a pastor and several spiritual friendships who can mentor and walk with you into deeper friendship with God.

Does The Bible Forbid Homosexuality

Gay-friendly clergy tend to use the terms love and acceptance interchangeably, claiming that we must love everyone, because we are all children of God.

It is certainly true that Jesus commanded us to love everyone, but it is not true that we are all children of God. And it certainly is not true that we must tolerate and accept evil behavior.

Scripture repeatedly refers to children of the Devil:

No one born of God commits sin for Gods nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother .

You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your fathers desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies .

Anyone who has seen cursing, blaspheming homosexuals simulating sex at a Gay Pride parade, or has read their hate-filled screeds against the Catholic Church, should have no problem discerning whether they are children of God or spawn of the Devil.

Of course, homosexual persons are to be loved and respected, and homosexual tendencies are not sinful if they are not wanted. But homosexual activity is immoral and absolutely anti-biblical.

No Longer Male And Female

There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female for all of you are one in Christ Jesus .

The writer of this passage, the apostle Paul himself a Jewish Christian free male neither denies nor diminishes various identities, but affirms here that unity in spiritual community trumps cultural, ethnic, economic and gender divisions all are one. Those in our own time who do not fit absolutely into the categories of male and female remind their congregations to practice what they proclaim: that our spiritual unity with one another and with God transcends matters of gender identity and expression. Those who know themselves as transgender reveal that there is a spectrum of gender identity that stretches between the experiences of male and female.

Positive references to eunuchs in both Hebrew and Christian scriptures may be said to resemble this experience but, more explicitly, the Mishna and Talmud have terms for differently gendered individuals between male and female.

If Your Adult Child Doesnt Claim To Have A Personal Relationship With Christ

That changes how you should approach moral issues with them. 1 Corinthians 5:9-6:20 explains that we must deal with the sins of believers and non-believers differently.

  • Dont expect a non-Christian to place any value in your way of thinking. Without the power and influence of the indwelling Holy Spirit, none of us seeks to obey God. Your unsaved child has no reason to want to conform to what seem like arbitrary, outdated social norms, much less follow the precepts and principles of Scripture.
  • Trying to force a non-believer to behave in ways that honor Christ is offensive to them, breaks the relationship, and undermines your future witness.
  • People separated from God dont need to act better they need new life in Christ. For advice on sharing your faith with your adult child, .
  • Compassionately consider the spiritual task that lies before them. The average non-Christian has to trust God with their soul for salvation. Most of us didnt have to think about giving Him our struggle over something as uniquely personal as our gender identity, too. Trans people who come to Christ must surrender their sexual identity to Him in a profound act of trust. For an account of a person who did just this, read Walt Heyers amazing story.

Sex Reassignment Surgery Castration And Other Gender

In the Old Testament, men with damaged testicles or severed genitals are forbidden from being admitted to religious assemblies.

The New Testament is more ambiguous about gender-variant identities than the Old Testament. Eunuchs are indicated as acceptable candidates for evangelism and baptism, as demonstrated in a story about the conversion of an Ethiopian eunuch. At one point, while answering questions about marriage and divorce, Jesus says that “there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.” This has sparked discussion about the significance of the selection of the Ethiopian eunuch as being the first Gentile convert to Christianity. Some argue that the inclusion of a eunuch represents a sexual minority similar to some of those who are included under today’s category of transgender, in the context of the time.

Questions To Ask Ourselves

What Does the Bible Say About Gender and Sexuality? | Pastor Matthias Haeusel
  • Can scientific discoveries expand our gratitude and joy for the complexity of our bodies and the universe in which we live, rather than frighten us?

  • Can we celebrate gender variance and diversity and affirm those who have often been seen as sinful or broken, unworthy of full participation in the life of the community of faith?

  • What if we informed ourselves with regard to contemporary discussions of gender identity and welcomed those who would teach us about their particular experience in the world? What if we celebrated each persons uniqueness with regard to gender expression and identity?

The theme of the book I am writing, , is compassion is a matter of life and death. As I write this blog, a global pandemic is changing our lives drastically all over the world. In the coming days, compassion will truly be a matter of life and death.

What Does The Bible Say About Transgenderism

More By Kevin

Some would argue that the Bible says nothing about the explosion of the transgender phenomenon in the Western world. After all, there is no verse that says, Thou shalt not transition from a man to a woman. But neither are there any verses that talk explicitly about gun violence, anorexia, waterboarding, fossil fuels, vaccines, GMOs, HMOs, or Pokemon Go. We should not expect the Bible to speak in 21st century terms to every 21st-century eventuality.

But that hardly means the Bible provides no guidance for Christians trying to make sense of our transgender moment. In fact, when it comes to transgenderism, the Bible actually has a lot to saynot by a prooftext here or there but by a rich and pervasive understanding of gender and sexual identity.

Obviously, transgenderism, as a cultural trend, is massively complex, touching on fields as disparate as genetics, fashion, medicine, law, education, entertainment, athletics, and religious liberty. We need Christians thinking through, and talking to, all of these issues. We also need Christians patiently loving, counseling, and befriending those who feel that their psychological identity as male or female contradicts their assigned biological sex. In asking the question, What does the Bible say about transgenderism? we are asking a question that can take us in a dozen different directions.

And what is that understanding?

1. Gender Binary

2. Gender Identity

3. Gender Confusion

Focus On Enjoying God Instead Of Simply Teaching Moral Behaviors

One of the biggest misperceptions about Christianity is that its simply about acting right. When Christian parents overemphasize their childs behavior rather than their heart, the real message they send often has more shame than love. This distorted view of the Gospel leads people to reject traditional gender roles as being just another Christian idea thats outmoded and unnecessarily restrictive.

The message our kids really need to hear is that forming your spirit in deep friendship with God is the only way to peace, salvation, and your true identity.

The Bible Presents God As Male

Does it state anywhere in the Bible about sex change ...

God is always portrayed in the original manuscripts of the Bible as being male, not female.

Regardless of who is referring to Godwhether he himself or othershe is always portrayed in the original manuscripts of the Bible as being male, not female. For instance, in the Hebrew Old Testament, the 6,828 occurrences of his name, , are always in association with masculine adjectives, and masculine verbs.2 Similarly his titleswhether in Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greekare all masculine, and are always associated with masculine grammatical forms.3 Furthermore, in all three biblical languages, all pronouns associated with Godi.e., words used instead of his name or titles, such as he, him, hisare masculine.

Thus, throughout the Old and New Testaments, God is portrayed in many thousands of grammatical forms as being male and never once as being female. The evidence is overwhelming and conclusive.

God Made Me Transgender And God Does Not Make Mistakes

It is always a tragedy when anybody takes their own life, doubly so when they are so young. This week Leelah Alcorn took her own life. In her note, she mentioned various reasons for her course of actions, from not thinking she would be able to pass as female to the lack of acceptance from her family. In her suicide letter, she stated that she had come out to her mother, and her moms response was that God doesnt make mistakes.

God doesnt make mistakes.

Out of the whole situation, which leaves a lot to digest, this one statement has been rattling around my brain ever since the public outcry to end reparative therapy began. This statement is at the core of why so many right winged, conservative Christians are at odds with the transgender community.

There is a view amongst some Christians that being transgender is an affront to Gods design and an outward sign of rebellion. The purported argument goes if you were born male that is the way God intended you to be. Since God doesnt make mistakes, living as anything other than male is an abomination worthy of scorn, admonition, isolation, or worse.

God doesnt make mistakes.

It is thinking like this that makes transgender people an outcast class of citizens.

It is thinking like this that makes it okay to minimalize a transgender person and to make them the subject of ridicule and attack. The notion that transgender people are somehow defective leads to bigotry, discrimination and other forms of nastiness.

God Need Not Have Created Gender Or Represented Himself As Male

As already suggested, theoretically God could have conceived of a means of asexual reproduction for humans. Indeed, asexual reproduction is seen in single-celled organisms, and in many plants and fungi. Furthermore, had he so wished, God could have made it clear that he was genderless. Translators of the Chinese Bible have apparently utilized a genderless, divine pronoun,29 so it is entirely conceivable that God could have done something similar when he spoke, for example, to the Patriarchs, to Moses, and to the other prophets. But he didnt. The only explicit support that Waltke and OConnor offer for the notion that God is non-sexual is Deuteronomy 4:1516.30 Not only do these verses fail to confirm their supposition , but they also highlight how easy it would have been for God to state unequivocally that he was genderless, if that had been his intent. When he told the people not to make any image in the likeness of male or female , he could easily have added, for YHWH your God is neither male nor female. But he didnt add these words.

The fact is that God chose to incorporate gender into his very good creation and to present himself as being male.
