Worship With Us Come and worship with us in downtown Frederick. Traditional services are Saturdays at 6pm and Sundays at 8 and 11. Our contemporary service is Sunday at 9:30. Everyone is welcome! All are welcome.

History of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick, MD

The Rev. John Caspar Stoever, Jr., began preaching to families in 1733 and effected the organization of the Lutheran Church in Monocacy on November 26, 1738. The early congregation met at different locations near Thurmont until the first home in Frederick, a log church, was constructed in 1746.

During the summer of 1752, construction started on a new building. Nine years later, the entire community came to the official dedication of the new church. The building was constructed of native blue limestone and had just a single tower.

In 1771, the church purchased two bells from London, England, one of which is still being used in the West bell tower. Their original cost was $560, plus a transportation fee of about $400. In 1870, the smaller bell was recast in Baltimore, Maryland, having developed a crack from almost a century of ringing. The recast bell continues to be used today.

In October of 1853, the congregation authorized the Council to lay plans and proceed with the building of a new church. The new construction would have twin towers replacing the original single tower edifice. Construction started in 1854 with the laying of a new cornerstone in August of that year. Construction was completed in 1855 and the dedication of the temple with twin towers was held in December of that year. Gas lamps originally lighted the sanctuary

History Of The Graveyard And Cemetery Of Evangelical Lutheran Church In Frederick

It is important to understand that this was the first Lutheran Church in Maryland and as such it often held the records of deaths and burials, but not all were within the church graveyard or cemetery. Often the burial was recorded in the church parish record book however, the remains were located in family cemeteries throughout Frederick County.

The first Lutheran Graveyard affiliated with ELC was located at the rear of the current church where the kitchen, church garden, and Schaeffer Center are now located. This was the graveyard. When the original limestone church was expanded in 1825, they relocated the graves. Initially graves were relocated to a newer Lutheran cemetery about ½-mile to the east. By 1833, no new graves were opened in this graveyard by the church except for the widows and widowers of those already interred.

When the Sunday School building was constructed in 1890, additional graves were relocated from the graveyard however, this time they were relocated directly to Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A record of these graves has not been located.

In September 1851 the wall of stone and brick was built around what was then considered the old graveyard. The masons were George M. and Hiram Nusz.
